felching pen: Coelacanth: When I was working at the Bellagio, we had some casino porters who got upset about Satanic exhibits in the art gallery there.

They thought the Russian exhibit with the Faberge Eggs was the work of the Devil.

Satanic? They worked at a farking casino! Grabbing up the filthy lucre from gamblers, boozers and hookers, and they're offended by Easter eggs?!?!

No candy in them. Screw that, its pure evil.

Ends justify the means in this case, that mural was horrible. Get some good graffiti artists on the case and this whole thing is solved, maybe paint something over it that is more positive or something that fits the area better. Just because the guy's French doesn't mean he's a good artist and you don't have to be religious to think that mural was ugly as hell.

/Speaking of snakes, there's an ugly statue in downtown San Jose of a snake coiled up and it looks like a turd. Get rid of that garbage too.

Yeah, man, I get all that, thanks. I have no doubt some kind of permit problem exists; "there's always something." But it sounds like Living Walls made a good faith effort to get approval. But why argue that anyway? If it's a permit problem you go to the law. That's not what we're talking about. We're not here because there's a permit issue; those are boring. We're here because a small group of extremists, painted over something they didn't like.

Which small group of extremists would that be?

Angel Poventud wasn't surprised when he heard a group of community leaders from the Pittsburgh community painted over the mural on University Avenue.

Where does it say anything about a group of extremists? Not sure if I a missing it or not.

No, no. You got it. Unless that group of community leaders was sent by the city to enforce a permit violation and paint over the mural, what they did can be considered extreme. And, really how many people do you think we're talking about? A couple of prayer groups at most, right?

How can it be a permit violation for something that never existed, covering something that should not have been there? Usually when the population cleans something up that shouldn't be there in the first place, they are applauded for it.

I am curious as to where the religious comments are coming from (ie, prayer groups). The only person who brought up anything religious is a supporter of the mural, and who appears to be someone that likes to push buttons. As I stated up thread, I am not Christian. This just seems to be an easy way for our normal trolltastic farkers to come in and spew the average crap they love. In this case, it is clearly misguided and incorrect, but hey, that's what trolls are for. Ah well.

That being said, thanks for actually reading my comments instead of assuming I am just some random asshole on fark trying to push my own agenda. I prefer to have an actual conversation, not bs name calling. W ...

What I got from the article was that it was a commissioned work of art that some neighbirs didn't like, so they painted over it. Yes, the "snakes and scales" quote was not from the angry neighbors/community leaders. The councilwoman didn't even use that language she just said the complaints were that they didn't like it. I'm also pretty sure that, while they weren't given much of a voice in this article, the opponents of the mural made their disapproval clear before they brought the buckets and brushes. Yes, it's a stretch to blame "christian extremists." But not much of one. This wasn't done by art critics. IMO

Thanks.

Cheers!

SearchN: Personally, I prefer this one:Some scholars have suggested that the symbol once represented a worm wrapped around a rod; parasitic worms such as the "guinea worm" (Dracunculus medinensis) were common in ancient times, and were extracted from beneath the skin by winding them slowly around a stick. Physicians may have advertised this common service by posting a sign depicting a worm on a rod. But, that's just me.

it could very well be associated with that. There were also medicines used by the Greeks derived from snakes. Also the snake is a symbol of Apollo, who was also associated with healing. There may even have been a connection to the bit about the snake and the rod in the Bible. The records simply aren't there to say with any certainty. The modern use does certainly derive from the Greek.

Oh, and I am quite certain that I recall that the phrase "the worm has turned" does derive from the method used to remove a guinea worm.

BronyMedic: That's the Star of Life. The Staff of Asclepius symbolizes the art and science of medicine, and the tradition from which Prehospital and Transport medicine came from. The points also have meaning.

It was the first image I found. That being said I did not know that there was more to that particular icon, or that it is the Star of Life. So I learned something new, cheers for that and a favourite in my happy green colour for you.

Having google earthed the area and looking at the ART longer, I am starting to like this artist's cleverness more and more.

Noticed he used two colours, IDENTICAL to the two colours on the (utilitarian, boring, ugly as sin) building behind this hunk of concrete - HE ONLY HAD TWO COLOURS TO PLAY WITH.

Gotta give him a knowing nod for that.

Oh, not a problem. I love to teach a little bit every now and then.

The history of it is a pretty interesting read. It's ironic that many EMTs and Paramedics don't know the meaning behind the star's points today.

Their community. If they didn't want it fine, they could petition, but the property also wasn't theirs - it is the entire public's.

2012-11-11 03:56:00 AM
Blech, that needed painting over. Why didn't they hire a local artist to paint something locally meaningful or historic on the wall? That wouldn't get painted over no matter how ugly it is.

2012-11-11 04:09:37 AM

WhyteRaven74: BTW Genesis never says what the snake in the garden is, or who. The first mention of the devil comes way way later. And he's not particularly much to worry about either, just deals in temptation. Can't actually make anyone do anything nor is the cause of all that is wrong in the world.

Even better is that the Hebrew word for serpent doesn't even necessarily mean "snake", it could mean something more akin to "reptiloid". Lucifer is called the "god of this world" and offered Yeshua all of the kingdomws of the Earth, and at no time did Yeshua dispute the ownership.

What's really funny is when you start connecting dots across the ancient world. Queztacoatl is known to have two forms - one is the winged reptile-man that was known to the priest class only. He taught them the basics of civilization and all he asked for in return were the peoples hearts. No, really, he taught the priest class to cut out the still beating hearts out of people, even taught them how to carve the knifes to do it. His other form is the really interesting one, because the physical description that is consistent from Northern Mexico to Southern Brazil is of a dark haired bearded white man in white robes. This is how he introduced himself. Amazing how the the Catholic art work depicts Yeshua exactly in this manner when a physical description of Yeshua is literally NOWHERE to be found in any book of the bible, even in the non-cannon texts.

Satan can't make anyone do anything, but he doesn't ave to. All he has to do is plant the seed and let basic human shiatieness do the rest.

If only I could reach those overly religious people. I'd tell them I'm a great "holy artist" whose talents can only be admired by true believers. After convincing them to pay me $2,000,000, I'd scribble little amateurish angelic things on the wall and then make the neighborhood kids paint them whatever color they like. I'd then tell them "These angels were just artistic lines, but the children painted them with love and soul."

I'm pretty sure it would be a hit while I giggle back to my limo as I count their money.

It would take a lot to depreciate property values in that part of town but that mural would do the trick. It sounds like the only person who mentioned religion was something of a nutjob trying to slander black people trying to protect their land values. How do I know Angel Poventud is a nutjob? The green dress he wears while rollerblading around Piedmont Park is a dead giveaway.

They do not deserve art like that.

They clearly want poorly drawn phalluses. Why else would they give the local teens a huge blank wall to spray paint?

skinink: Well, the artist does a lot of unusual pieces. I just think it's ugly but I wouldn't go as far as to deface it myself.

That's the issue - sure, if you don't like the mural, object. In this case, they would have won easily, since the proper permit hadn't been obtained.
Instead, they snuck in the night and vandalized it. In doing so, they lost any sympathy from me - now they just look ignorant.

2012-11-11 06:51:32 AM
This article is completely covering up the real story. The mural was painted by surviving members of the Third Reich. They found a Dr I. Jones in the phone book and thought they'd finally had their revenge. Ingrid's been on edge for weeks and almost botched a root canal.

Haven't read the thread all the way though, but I wanted to skim and make sure we had plenty of people lumping the entire southern US in with these people. Because like the rest of you, everyone here is in 100% agreement with what our neighbors do. And I'd hate for you all to miss out on an opportunity to feel superior to someone else. And I'm certainly unaware of the irony of me painting the entire region with a broad brush, while at the same time accusing them of being closed-minded.

But one comment in particular has stood out to me:

bostonowns: if anyone tries to defend the south in any way just point out to them that:
bible belt states lead the US in highschool drop outs, underage pregnancy, lowest insured, per capita highest welfare rates, and most obese. so we have fat, dumb, sick people milking the system and dying while they scream it's the liberals fault!

You're right. Kind of. All of the statistics you've dragged out are direct or indirect results from poverty, which is indeed leading in the south. But ...so? What does that have to do these idiots hating on the mural? Did you find some bizarre piece of data that associates poverty with a distrust of snakes? Or are you trying to correlate religion with paucity? Because I'm fairly certain I could find one or two people that would object to your misunderstanding of correlation and causation.

Or was this just your way of adding salt to the wound? "Some idiots down there disliked a mural for stupid reasons! And they have poor people too! Haha!" Clarify for me, please.

And judging from your username I'm going to operate under the assumption that you're living in Massachusetts. Now I could be a dick and point out your state's failings and bring them up any time some idiot in Boston runs his mouth - like your state's staggeringly high homelessness rate(#6 in the nation, despite only having 2% of the country's population), your state's crackdown on personal freedoms, your state's strangely high cost of living, or that whole electing-Romney-governor thing.

But I'm not going to do all that. Because I don't want to be the asshole that brings up wildly unrelated bullsh*t while lumping an entire region of millions of people that may or may not disagree with what some idiots are doing in their neighborhood.

Spend a little less time on that high horse, or every time you go by all anyone's going to see is a horse's ass.

2012-11-11 08:42:31 AM
It was painted over by some because they weren't consulted, NOT because anyone thought it was 'satanic'. Angel Poventud is full of shiat!

That being said, the mural was properly permitted and on DOT property, By painting over it the opponents became vandals and should be treated as such.
