Spiralmonkey: Porous Horace: Raisins in (the right) curry is great.
Also on (the right) curry-style pizza.

You sound like the kind of sick puppy who thinks its OK to put pineapple on pizza too. There is no place for fruit on pizza, not even in Hawaii. Maybe possibly in hell...

WHAT? What is your Damage? Hawaiian Delight (Canadian bacon and pineapple) pizza is TEH BOMB.

Almost as divine as shrimp and onion.

Last night we celebrated something and went to Mongolian BBQ, Had pork with pineapple in one of the bowls (I had 6 bowls). I thought the lady running the place was gonna go John Pinette on me Link

Who knew dried grapes could be so divisive?

I've had an inkling of this for a few years since I threw some raisins into a homemade apple pie that I baked and brought to an office thanksgiving lunch. Several of the ladies in attendance reacted violently to the idea. In my experience, most people that don't like a particular dish simply don't eat it. I didn't expect expressions of disgust.

I guess either you like 'em or you don't. Sweet, wierd little lumps.

Pineapple is a kid's topping.

Yes. What's that from?

The Newsroom. The slightly older CBC one, not the new American one.

/ the pizza place nearest us does a chicken tika masala pizza, also a vindaloo or jalfrezi

Wow. I sometimes make my own pizza, using sausages from a local Italian grocery, which is great if you love sausage pizza.
I will soon try making a vindaloo pizza, thanks for the idea!
Everyone should make their own pizza.
Pizza is really cheap to make and (like most any other food) is much better if you make it yourself.

When the history of the fall of the United States is written in 2150AD, the historians and archeologists will discover that it was not liberal -vs- conservative, nor collectivist -vs- libertarian, not Democrat -vs- Republican that led to 300,000,000 dead and smoking, slagged ruins where cities once stood. No, they will discover that the culprit was The Raisin Wars.

I bought rum raisin a few weeks ago...I was on a 'buy lame sounding flavors so you don't eat the whole pint in one sitting' kick. It worked really well with the rum raisin and it got better over time.

Okay, before adding those dry, rabbit turd-like raisins to your food, pour boiling water over them and let them sit for 5 minutes to plump up. I love golden raisins in savory dishes especially, but only if they are moist.

brantgoose: Raisins are OK but they do not belong in carrot salad. Well, any kind of salad to tell the truth.

I'm listening to The Goon Show and by coincidence one of the actor said "raisins!" just after I typed the word. This happens more often than you might think. It's not the first time for me.

raisins used in dry cooking such as cookies retain their texture, in breads they become softer.

In wet cooking such as stews, soups, pot roasts, pilafs, etc. they absorb a lot of water and become soft brown spheres that are almost wrinkle free, and are sure to scare many Americans.

Maybe for Thanksgiving I should make some mashed potatoes with currants well enough before hand that they get fully hydrated and see which guests freak out. (Currants are not really currants but instead are rasins made from tiny grapes)

Hey, so here's what I think the problem is: The raisins in baked goods and other confections absorb water. So what you wind up with is a grape in your mouth that feels as though it's suffering from some tragic disease like progeria. And who wants a cookie or a cake that feels like that?

/I always order the rice pudding at indian restaurants just for the golden raisins they put in. They either put them in right before they bring it to the table, or they have those farkers freeze dried to add to let them soak up water to the point where the feel like a regular raisin after sitting in moisture overnight.

Let me just say that if there is someone somewhere on the planet eating something you don't think should be eaten then, my friend, it is your tastebud's lack of agreement with nourishment or your unwillingness to develop new tastes and explore new culinary landscapes. So why do we have to be talking about your problems yet again? You sound like your body would reject beef broth.

I am sorry for you affliction. It must be hell to go through life eating 1970s food smothered in fruit but you can get help. The first step is recognising you have a problem. Put the bacon back beside the eggs where it belongs and STEP AWAY FROM THE PINEAPPLE.

Raisins are an abomination against nature. There is nothing that can render those disgustingly saccharine vile nuggets edible, as is evidenced by the following:
"No matter how long you hold it in your mouth, it never turns back into a grape."

They're like boogers. Add them to a bowl of oatmeal with a banana and you're eating a bowlful of scabs with turds and boogers. It's a textural nightmare.

Bathia_Mapes: Marcus Aurelius: unyon: Raisins in oatmeal cookies are delicious.

If I must use raisins, I use sultanas soaked in rum.

Otherwise I use dried cherries instead.

In fact you can safely replace anything that calls for raisins with dried cherries, and you'll lead a much happier life.

Dried cranberries in cookies are pretty tasty too.

One of my favorite holiday cookies is oatmeal cookies with cranberries and white chocolate chunks. I'm not usually a fan of white chocolate, but it works well with cranberries. If you toss in crushed up Macadamia nuts, they're even better.

2012-11-10 10:41:16 PM
I LOVE dried fruit. Cherries, cranberries, pineapple, mango, banana, etc. Hell, I even eat fruit leather. And I LOVE grapes. Red seedless grapes, sliced in half and stuck onto a walnut with a dollop of cream cheese is a tedious, but delicious snack. Frozen green grapes is one of my favorite summer snacks.

But I absolutely hate raisins. Always have, always will. I don't understand, but I ain't about to try to fix it.

For a much better dried fruit cookie recipe, see: Chocolate, Toasted Coconut, and Dried Cherry Cookies. The only changes to the recipe is that I use German chocolate, and I tend to triple the recipe volume, because I usually end up eating an entire batch's worth before they've even had a chance to cool. Yes, they are THAT good. Yes, I sound fat.

Raisins are tolerable in trail mix, but it's much better to throw them out and replace them with an assortment of dried cherries, cranberries, and blueberries.

Peanut butter cookies with chocolate chips tum. With raisins? Not so much. Vice versa for Oatmeal cookies. There is a time and place for everything...

Pro-tip: The next time that you makes peanut better cookies with chocolate chips, about 4-5 minutes before they are done take a mini peanut butter cup and put one on top of each of the cookies (upside down) and let it melt and then cool down. You will thank me later.
