I just want the Cybermen to go back to the old-school style, including the look. They're not the Borg. They are creative, they are cunning, they lie and manipulate. They're not a mindless force of destruction, which is what the Borg should be.

I just watched my first episode of Doctor Who the other day, and it was "Tomb of the Cybermen". It was awesome.

......I wish new Who was on Canadian netflix, because it's on American netflix.

//Currently halfway through "Robots of Death".

That

was your first? It's a good episode, but it's so rare to hear about people experiencing Troughton first. I grew up on Baker and Davidson, but I have to say- Troughton is one of my favorite Doctors.

ModernLuddite: Why does the Doctor wear a big coat and scarf, but his companion wears nothing?

Because the Doctor's a goof, and for the audience's benefit.

I miss the real Sontarans. Fark these miniature Oompa Loompa pussies that got introduced with Nu-Who.

I love how the dalek's ... ahem ... eye stalk is pointing unnaturally upward in that pic. But while that's a lot more "wearing nothing," this pic is a lot more actually on the show:

To me it looks like someone took an Iron Man costume, painted it silver, and glued some Cyberman handles on the head. It looks cool, but you can definitely see the influence.

Despite the story being slow as molasses and talky as hell, I did like the part on the TNG/Who crossover comic where the Cybermen totally screwed over the Borg because they weren't expecting their cybernetic allies to turn on them and make a power grab once they had infiltrated the Borg network and discovered their vuberabilies.

Mad_Radhu: I did like the part on the TNG/Who crossover comic where the Cybermen totally screwed over the Borg

That was a neat story point, although it would have been nice if it were delivered through an action sequence showing the Cybermen doing their thing, instead of characters standing around talking about how the Cybermen just did that and how bad it would be for every universe. As you said, "talky".

Yup, he's promising to make them scary again.

But since news of him writing an episode just came out, I didn't think they'd be filming it already. But then again, I don't see them doing two Cybermen episodes so close together.

I've always found them scary, mostly due to the cutting through your skull with dentist drill noise implications. At least the stupid Daleks just disintegrate you.

They should bring back the Zygons and get David Cronenberg for the episode.

You are all bunch of prissy whiners. IT'S NEW DOCTOR WHO. NEW DOCTOR WHO IS BETTER THAN NO DOCTOR WHO.
Kids today don't know what it was like in the Dark Times when all we had was New Adventure novels, the Doctor Who Magazine comic strip and rumors of a Steven Spielberg movie. I had to walk a mile in the snow just to see a third generation VHS copy of "City of Death" and I LIKED it that way. We had no hope of seeing anything new. You fans don't know that you're born. Now, get off my lawn.

2012-11-10 06:44:22 PM
First thought: They still look a little too much like Cybus-Men, and not Cybermen.
Second thought: considering what they did to the Daleks with their update, there's nothing to complain about here.

2012-11-10 06:55:09 PM
They don't really look all that different to me.

I want them to bring back the Alpha Centauri. Honestly, I would have expected that to happen in RTD's run.

-----

I must say 'thank you' for that full-body shudder you just gave me...

...that's perhaps the most disgustingly terrifying concept for an episode I've heard in a while...

...how about 'Bring back Morbius and have David Lynch direct the episode?'

...ew...

jgrynspan: Maybe I'm missing it, but how are these cybermen different from the ones we've seen in the past fivealmost eight years?

The face has less of the cheekbone-thing and calls back to the flatter faces of the old-Who Cybermen. The chest-plate is completely different. There's no Cybus logo and there's now that weird strappy-thing, like they've got bandoliers strapped across their chest. The arms are also completely different. The new ones are more slender and have decorative scalloping. The gauntlets are more fitted to the forearm. Same for the legs. The abdomen is now completely armored with scalloped plating, instead of just having a little apron of it. The whole silhouette of the costume is different- this actually looks more human. I could actually see this Cyberman running after someone.

It's clearly an evolution in the design. It's not some completely new revision. I don't think I like how they crudded it up with extra decorative elements, without finding a way to call-back to the old accordion-chest design of yesteryear. This chestplate looks like a super-hero costume. I do like the line of the costume, though. It looks sleeker.
