I'm beginning to think the election wasn't so much about issues more than the fact that people didn't want Romney.

/Just like they didn't want Kerry.
/Mitt lost to McCain, who lost to Obama, so I didn't expect much of a different outcome.

"Pew Research finds that Mitt Romney won 78% of the Mormon vote in the 2102 presidential election."

2102? I thought we'd finally be rid of Romney, but it appears that he's going to be running for President for at least another century! Goddamnit! He's the next Pat Paulsen!

2012-11-09 03:20:51 PM
Mitt Romney does seem to be an extraordinarily unpleasant, entitled, arrogant, foolish, self-serving, oblivious, contemptuous, bullying, appalling, detestable, loathsome and repulsive excuse for a human being. And wholly irreligious, which doesn't matter to me but presumably should matter to the religious.

It says a lot that all the other republican candidates were too corrupt, too vile, too insane or too unacceptably normal to get the candidacy, and Mitt was considered the best of the bunch. Dat party over, yo.

Also, his tear nourish my soul. Moar/

To be fair, robots don't exactly die out, and his programming is pretty much centered around the fact that he will keep trying and trying to win no matter how often he loses.

I had a feeling LDS enthusiasm was a bit more tepid for Romney than a lot of people expected. Up and down the Salt Lake Valley, I just wasn't seeing the yard signs or stickers on cars. You'd see them here and there, but not to the level you might expect for the area, and with about the same frequency as Obama signs and stickers. Tons of yard signs for local candidates, plenty of Mia Love signs. But so few for Romney... There's been one sticker on a green pick-up truck in the parking lot of my office complex far enough south to be heavily Mormon, and that's it.

I mean, no surprise the guy carried Utah, but I don't think there was much enthusiasm behind it.

Remember when he said he was a "pastor" in his church? Mormons don't have pastors. He was a Bishop but refused to use the term. In Pastor he used a term more in line with a group who have for years stated that Mormonism is nothing but a cult. If I was a devout Mormon that would have truly pissed me off.

I was at my good friends house last night. First time I had visited him since the election. His family, including himself, is very Mormon. All of his brothers, aunts, uncles, mother & father and grandparents. He voted for Obama due to the fact Romney could not stick to his guns on any issue while Obama did. And his wife, who really doesn't pay attention to politics voted the same way.

I had assumed that somewhere during the election some grand mormon pubah would make a declaration that all mormons vote for "the mormon candidate". It never farking happened, hell it didn't even sound like anything like it would begin to happen. Really caught me off guard. Also the smartest thing they could do as a religion. Go for the high ground and stick to message, not politics.

I'm not going to lie, mormons freak me the hell out. But they consistently impress me more than some other "mainstream" religions.

2012-11-09 03:53:26 PM
Yeah, OK, but a percentage is meaningless without comparing the totals.

If Bush got 80% of one million mormons, but this election two million mormons turned out and 78% voted for Romney, is it still "worse"?

No idea what the actual numbers are, but I'd suspect the mormons have a higher than average turnout % and the total turnout between the two elections are similar. Still, need the totals.

Neither of those numbers is surprising. Mormons have always distrusted and frequently hated the United States. It's part of their history. It figures they would go strongly with whatever candidate had demonstrated the greatest contempt for American goverment, traditions, and the Constitution.

Well, yes, historically the Mormons wanted to go some where the United States couldn't tell them how to live, but I wouldn't go so far as to say today's Mormons are that way.

One of their more colorful characters was Sam Brannan (An early San Francisco businessman, sailed around South America with Mormon missionaries to California to build a community outside the US ... and arrived just in time for the US to annex California. He then stole the Mormon Church's money, and told Brigham Young he'd give it back when he got a receipt signed by God. Good times.

2102 doesn't have a presidential election. Firstly, that's a midterm year, and secondly, the world will have been consumed in nuclear fire by then and cockroaches can't vote.

I think the whole idea of "legitimate rape" turned a lot of people off the republican party in general.

Also the whole while he was a Bishop "never have an abortion, even if the Mom's life depends on it, which is actually completely in line with Mormon beliefs, cuz I said so" fiasco.

In non-swing states, stickers and yard signs are to help encourage campaign donations. In swing states, they're advertisement.

Where I live, I'd have to pay or volunteer to get a yard sign. Down where my parents live, in Florida, the party would practically pay to have a sign in their yard.

I was at the Medford airport in a terminal with a full plane's worth of Mormons about to embark for Salt Lake last Sunday. The television was playing Fox News, and some blonde bimbo was screeching that this has been the ugliest campaign ever and Obama will have a hard time overcoming the negativity if he's re-elected. Some New York liberal lady sitting across from me started yelling at the screen, asking "How can people watch this drivel!?" and "No woman in her right mind would vote for this man".

I explained to her calmly but loud enough for everyone to hear that some people only watch television like that and follow similarly slanted radio stations and newspapers, so they basically live in a completely different reality than her. She was still indignant, asking how Obama has been campaigning negatively.

I said "well, basically he just airs things that Romney has said or done, then other things he's said or done that are the opposite, and points out the contradictions and allows the viewers to connect the dots. Its not really negative campaigning or slander, he's just pointing out what a terrible candidate Romney is and how completely void of principle he has been. He'll say or do anything to get elected, thats all he cares about."

My friend who was about to jump on that plane (I wasn't) grabbed my leg and said, "Hey man, these people are going to Salt Lake. You might really be offending them." I took a moment to look around. Pretty much all of them were clearly pretending not to pay attention to my exchange, busily studying their shoes or sheepishly looking away.

I said: "Listen man, these people might be Mormon, but they're not stupid. Romney is a terrible candidate, and an insult to our collective intelligence. Mormon's and Republicans included." I looked around again, and saw quite a few of them nodding in agreement. Noone confronted me or said anything, nobody even seemed more than embarassed that they recognized the truth in what I was saying.

It was beautiful, and illustrative of exactly what this article points out. Even Mormons knew Romney was a Moran.

Had Romney been running unopposed I still would not have voted for him. I will never vote for a practicing Mormon under any circumstances. To be a committed Mormon you have to willingly turn off most of your brain. There are intellectuals in ALL of the major faiths save Mormonism. Joseph Smith was a barely literate con man pure and simple.

Yes I realize that being religious, to some people, means turning off your brain but where is the Mormon Thomas Aquinas, Spinoza, Buddha, Lao Tzu, or Martin Luther King, Jr.?

Simple answer, Mormons are a lot dumber than most religious folks and can't inquire about their faith's origins in any meaningful way because its creator was a self serving, barely literate con man.

I brought that "pastor" thing up with my mom (who happens to be an ordained minister and former Kids Church teacher), along with the fact the Romney kept referring to his "going to church." Mormons don't go to "church." They go to "temple." Romney was deliberately using non-Mormon language to make himself and his religion seem like mainstream Christianity -- which it is not.

That alone should have offended both groups, but it's yet another example of how the guy was willing to lie or distort the truth in an attempt to win over voters. Zero integrity.

2012-11-09 06:19:37 PM
Romney is not only a Bishop in the LDS church, he's also a Stake President, which is more powerful. The offices and priesthoods of the LDS church are quite a bit different than those of the Catholic church. The way I read it, an LDS Bishop is kind of like a local priest, while a Stake President is more like the head of a Catholic Diocese...i.e., *that's* more like a Catholic Bishop.

Mitt is (I think) officially a High Priest of the Melchizedek Priesthood, a Bishop, and a Stake President in the LDS church.

I wonder if the LDS church will go back to being a "cult" in the eyes of evangelical Christians.

Not to mention when Romney talked about how much he revered the Bible. Practicing Mormons dismiss the idea that the Bible is divinely inspired because to them the book of Mormon alone is the only divinely inspired holy book. Of course Joseph Smith just happened to write in the same style as the King James Version of the Bible and filled the book with archeological impossibilities, The ethnographically impossible and anachronistic technology.. Yet NONE of those facts prevent the Morons from believing in it.

2012-11-09 06:30:36 PM
This post of mine in an earlier thread may explain why many Mormons didn′t vote for him. If my speculation therein is true, if Romney had been elected and then the speculated truth came out, it would′ve been absolutely devastating for Mormonism.
