Oh, and what's this playing on a aircraft carrier that's really a museum crap? I wanna see this game played somewhere in the middle of the Indian Ocean, not 100 feet from shore.

Yeah, I want to see them try and dribble in 20 foot waves and F/A 18 hornets landing a few feet away from the court.

Yorktown Threadjack Time!!!

www.collegehoopsjournal.com

I don't know if it's a trick of the light, or if Patriots Point was rushed on paint job, but the island looks weird. That's certainly not a Navy Measure paint scheme.

The museum suffered for a long time from a string of directors who were hired because they were generals and admirals, and did not have any museum, historic site, or non-profit management training. The organization spent more time acquiring new vessels than it did preserving its existing ones. As a result, the Yorktown has some major conservation issues, principally on the flight deck...

i450.photobucket.com

...including the bright idea to pour concrete into gaps created by deterioration of flight deck's teak wood, which isn't easy or cheap to remove.

i450.photobucket.com

The destroyer Laffey also developed hull corrosion issues, to the point where in December 2008 it sprung a leak and took on 4 feet of water.

i450.photobucket.com

That dark spot under the forward boiler mount was where a hull normally six inches thick had rusted away to less than a half-inch of thickness. They had to keep pumps running constantly, until they were able to raise emergency loans to have the ship drydocked and the hull refurbished in the fall of 2009. The Laffey is back in good shape at the museum, but it's going to take Patriots Point a long time to pay off the repairs.

The submarine Clamagore is in much worse shape - the outer hull definitely shows signs of corrosion:

June 2009:

September 2011: i450.photobucket.com

i450.photobucket.com

The museum staff is fairly certain the deterioration on the Clamagore is extensive enough that even preventative restoration would be too expensive for the museum to absorb the cost. And since there are plenty of Balao-class submarines preserved already, disposing of one that didn't see wartime service isn't a completely irreplaceable loss.

But the museum is making good progress. They've drastically improved museum practices and preservation techniques over the last decade. They're hiring directors who understand how to run a non-profit, and since the early 90s they've gone from seven vessels to three (and potentially two).

So I'm excited for the season (even if the Heels don't look to be as good as the last couple of years) and I'm especially excited to see the game tonight.

/I now return you to your regularly scheduled college hoops thread.

Georgetown vs. No. 10 Florida on the USS Bataan at Naval Station Mayport
No. 20 San Diego State vs. No. 9 Syracuse on USS Midway, San Diego

i guess there are three games on aircraft carriers and one more at an Air Force base.

They've got a pretty good fence running along the port side.

That catwalk on the port side is a bit nerve-wracking. It's a 20-foot drop into about six feet of water and thirty feet of mud and sediment, and that catwalk has some give to it.

UNC_Samurai: Yorktown Threadjack Time!!!

UNC_Samurai, thank you for those... seriously. I've always had a soft spot for The Fighting Lady, as my grandfather helped lay the deck of the original Yorktown (CV-5), and worked on the hull design of every Newport News-built carrier from the original Hornet (CV-8) all the way through the Ike (CVN-69). I know there have been some funding and maintenance issues with the Yorktown over the past few years, but I'm thrilled to see her get some positive coverage in this way; I'm sure this will also bring a much-needed cash infusion to the museum, which gives me added hope that they'll be able to keep her in good repair for quite a while to come.

/end threadjack, back to orangeball or whatever it's called

Go Bucks! Didn't even know they were playing tonight.

Sad to see the old boats in bad shape there, though.

SlothB77: Georgetown vs. No. 10 Florida on the USS Bataan at Naval Station Mayport

My turn to threadjack...my grandpa was a radar operator on the original USS Bataan. He was actually assigned to track the Enola Gay (without knowing exactly what it was, just that his commander told him it was more important than anything else going on and nothing was to get near it). He went out onto the deck when his shift was over and could see the mushroom cloud. Might have to watch that game with him.

I don't understand why they chose to play at midnight CET in Germany. It's a turrible time for Europe and for the US. A more logical time would have been 7pm on Saturday, which is 1pm East Coast US.

Also, Germany is a big basketball country, why not play one more in a normal arena and invite local fans? NFL and NHL have had quite a bit of success, but this whole thing just seems so strange to me.

2012-11-09 07:59:37 PM
And they're canceling the game. I'm really disappointed, but it's the only responsible decision.

This is a real shame. Patriots Point could have used the good publicity.

The Heels are going to look like the 2006 and 2010 squads this season. I'm assuming a little more like the '06 team; Paige and Johnson will be good players, but they're not where Hansbrough was his freshman year. I'm expecting to finish 4th, 75% chance to make it to Saturday of the Tournament, and then win one against a mid-major before getting bounced in the second round.

Ouch, it looks like the second game on the Bataan is going to get cancelled because of condensation on the court.

so what will be the final in that game? is it scored as if nothing happened? if i was G-Town i would want the game completed tomorrow. they were only down 4. knocking of #4 would be a big boost to start a season.

I've noticed that students that lived through the 8-20 season on campus always had a better grip on reality than a lot of fans.

/the upside was you could actually find a parking space near South Campus.

UNC playing 3 teams in their first 15 games ranked in the top 20.

duke plays 3 teams ranked in the top 6 in their first 14 games.

pre-season rankings aren't accurate. playing UK and OSU before december. sure UNC plays indiana in november. thats one team when duke plays 2.

it is a long way to march. so i will shut up now.
