Yes, we know Ebert had thyroid cancer. We also know about the whole jaw thing. Unless you've got a new punchline, skip the hack jokes about it.

I do like Daniel Craig as Bond.

He orders a beer, shaken, not stirred.

then it blows up and drenches the bond girl and hijinks ensue

Bond drinks a beer instead of a martini.

He does drink a Heineken at one point early on but he returns to the classic Shaken martini halfway through.

We're not at 23 Bond flicks, but I can't get "Galaxy Quest 2."

There's no farking justice.

Oh good. I thought they had ruined the character in the name of product placement.

Yeah, I had to log out to see if someone I set to ignore made a "gobsmacked" comment earlier in the thread, but saw nothing. Mulch was probably just being pre-emptive.

We really need a system to address spoiler issues. Maybe people who talk key details tag their post as such, and you can adjust your thread to read them or ignore them. Or something to that effect. I just read a post by Weaver saying that Bond is dead through the entire movie.

I saw somewhere, I think Gizmodo, where they talked about shaken vs stirred. Apparently shaken lowers the alcohol content, so they speculated that Bond always gets his shaken as not to get too messed up so he can drink yet do his job.

Same thing on NPR one morning. Shaking it agitates it, which melts more ice, which dilutes the alcohol content.

Saw it last night at a midnight show....

I liked it. Best Bond in years.

I liked that the scope was not a mega villain and was more personal in nature, liked the action sequences, loved seeing the DB5 trotted out for a gallop.

I will not Spoil further until this thread ages a bit.

Saw this last night in IMAX. Epic. Very well done, best Bond movie I've seen in a long time.

2012-11-09 01:43:08 PM
They had the director on this morning. Seems his idea was not to make a bond movie, but to make a movie with James Bond in it.

That may explain why it is actually good.

2012-11-09 01:58:28 PM
It was basically "you think the new bond isn't bond enough and needs more callbacks? All right, how about we do a callback to literally every bond movie, and when we run out of those we're going to reference tropes straight from the books instead?"

I think it started out as a "fark you" to the people that had complained about it and ended up working surprisingly well, so they kept doing it. It did make the characters kind of inconsistent (Craig was channeling Bond from a different movie/book in basically every scene, there wasn't really a proper character arc as such) and the movie kind of busy with otherwise unexplained stuff appearing from nowhere, but overall just piling on the Bond tropes until the script started making the table creak actually resulted in a really fun action movie.

JokerMattly: They had the director on this morning. Seems his idea was not to make a bond movie, but to make a movie with James Bond in it.

If that's what he claimed, he's a damned liar, because it's precisely the opposite of what he did. The antagonist is a flamboyant depraved bisexual who giggles inappropriately and sets up overly elaborate deathtraps, for chrissake, and there are one-liners and bad girls going good (to subsequently die) all over the place. This was more thoroughly a bond movie than goldeneye in some ways. Ridiculous, but, again, ridiculous in a way that works quite well.

He drinks three Heinekens (if I'm not mistaken) during the film and has one martini. The movie is phenomenal, but the Heineken and Sony product placements were ridiculous (Sony was more prevalent than Heineken). They must have given the Bond franchise Fort Knox. And I'm ok with that if it means more Bonds like Skyfall.

I agree. Went to see it at a sneak peak last night with my girlfriend, even she enjoyed it and has apparently never seen a Bond movie before. I like that they brought a bit of humour back in to the movie without going over the top. The personal connections were what I thought really made the movie. References to Bond nostalgia were handled well, and the fight scenes were excellent. Much more cinematic and while I'm ok with quick cut action scenes, I liked that they didn't go that route.

Jim_Callahan: It was basically "you think the new bond isn't bond enough and needs more callbacks? All right, how about we do a callback to literally every bond movie, and when we run out of those we're going to reference tropes straight from the books instead?"

I think I'll have to disagree with you on this. While there were plenty of references at no point did I find them overwhelming. Same with the one liners. And I think there was only one bad girl gone good in the whole film.

It seemed to me you were supposed to be undecided as to whether he was actually bisexual, or merely attempting a psychological game against Bond, who is perceived to be the ultimate alpha-male type. Clearly the antagonist has profound psychological issues but the flamboyancy, to me, came off more as a combination of deliberate affectation for affect plus being completely off his rocker.

And he drinks more scotch than anything, so I'm not sure what the point is. Some people are way to attuned to product placement. I barely noticed him drinking beer, let alone specifically that it was heineken, with the exception that it was clearly in a green bottle.

Hmmm. I need to see this. No babysitters available this weekend. Anybody want to watch my kid so the wife and I can catch a flick? If not, I'll just drop him off with some crack whores or something. It's just a few hours. Nothing bad can happen.

2012-11-09 02:24:52 PM
I'm really looking forward to seeing this. But trying to watch a movie without any preconceptions is a challenge these days. I saw Dredd twice and Looper in theatres and both movies had the spoiler laden trailer for Skyfall before it. Tried plugging my ears and closing my eyes but to no avail. Still have to wait until Monday or Tuesday though.

I use the terms interchangeably... then again, we also threw around the term "Lock and Load" even though some gun nut in the unit would inevitably tell us how that phrase made no sense, since we "loaded and locked"

I just can't figure out how a guy that reviews movies for a living can miss something that has been (repeatedly) a part of movie lore for 50 years. Does Roger Ebert think the gunshot sound is simply the noise the camera phone makes when snapping an Instagram picture (got to be instagram, right, since it is tinting the image red?)
