Something that always bothered me about the death star...why did it need to be so damned big? Is all that space needed by the support equipment for the primary weapon? Otherwise it seems like it is creating lots of extra vulnerable surface area that all needs to be protected simply for its own sake.

Also, why didn't the rebels just fly their fleet to the OTHER side of the damn thing in the final battle in epVI? Conservation of angular momentum is a biatch, and unless that thing had rotational hyperdrives it wasn't going to turn around fast enough to fire on them.

Depends. If George RR Martin is the architect, then the house will have:

- have very long, meandering hallways that ultimately lead nowhere,
- stairs that circle on themselves and lead back to basically the same place you were 5,200 stairs ago
- lots of noise and hurry from the construction workers that does not actually progress the work on the house at all
- then the random killing of the construction workers
- old lecherous men have graphic sex with underage women
- endless arguments from the zoning board over what the heck the house is actually supposed to be

IIRC, the main reactor that powered the hyperdrive, sub-light engines, and the main weapon was about half the diameter of the Death Star. Honestly, if the Empire was going to go that far... just hollow out Coruscant and fly a planet around the Galaxy, pew-pewing other planets. Guarantee you a reactor core the size of Coruscant's core would be nigh impossible to destroy fully, unless you somehow set a course for a black hole or a star and locked everyone else out.

So I looked up our moon on Wolfram and it is 2,160 at the equator. I thought that 75 miles seems tiny, but then I looked up Phobos, the biggest moon of Mars, and it is only 13.8 miles. So I guess it is moon-sized, with a little "m".

One more thing about how poorly done that calculation is. It's comparing houses, generally rectangular in shape, to the total available space inside. Pack them that closely and you can't have people moving. They also left out silly things like HVAC, food growing areas, recreational areas, and so forth. Not to mention the things power plant, landing docks, the red light district, and where we'd keep the minorities so someone can do the cleaning and yardwork.

On that note, I always thought it was interesting how we never saw the other side of the Death Star. They only shot one angle for some reason. I always wanted to see inside the unfinished parts.

Heh. Can't argue with you there...

The sad part is, having invested the time to slog trough the damn things, I guess I kinda have to stick with it. Fortunately, I just borrowed the books from a friend so I am not out money to read them.

I will grant that Martin writes character traits very well (Sandor Clegane, Brianna of Tarth, for example). I just hate the way he does 'gotcha' bullshiate with the "plot" (if a plot ever forms I'll let everyone know) and pushes the characters through large amounts of actions and incidents that are ultimately meaningless for advancing a "plot" (if there was one).

The other thing I do like is that each chapter has a character name as the title so I know when to skim ("Sansa") and when to pay more attention ("Jon", "Ayra").

Maybe I'm odd, but I do enjoy the longer series like this (Jordan, etc). Basically, if I'm going to invest in characters and like them, I want to have more time reading about it. However, considering the time he's taking between books, there's zippy chance I'm buying them as soon as they come out. Fark that - I'll pick up the paperback when it hits, or if I luck out and see it used I'll do that. Maybe even Kindle.

I like investing in characters as well. I just pissed off at random killing off of characters for no particular reason other than cheap shock value. The 'gotcha! The "Didn't see that coming did you reader? Aren't a I a Smart author? Aren't I a Clever author?"

No, Mr. Martin, not really.

If I want to read good authors I might reach for Guy Gavriel Kay or Robert Silverberg. When I want the fantasy equivalent of a endless teen sex/slasher movie, then I guess the Game is the thing.

The HUD has imposed rent-controls on the Death Star. Death stars can take a pounding from lasers, but nothing escapes the HUD.

You'll never get Yoda out of his 115,000 square foot apartment now. He's only paying 350 Republic Credits a month. That's pre-Empire rent! And the apartment has hardwood floors, 18 foot ceilings and something called a kitchen, although nobody in the Empire remembers what it is for.
