cfreak: Jim from Saint Paul: AbiNormal: "26. Sci-fi movie: 2001: A Space Odyssey Star Wars (all of them) | Serenity (But you have to see the entire season of Firefly on DVD before watching Serenity.)"

Fixed that for the idiot writer.

Right. because Empire Strikes Back is not better then Serenity.

RIGHT.

/wheedonite myself

Agreed. I see Serenity as being a bit better than Jedi and almost as good as A New Hope. Obviously it's better than all of the prequels.

Empire Strikes Back is the greatest fantasy MOVIE / sci-fi of all time

/ OF ALL TIME!

ALL TIME!!!

Empire Records/Airheads

I like them both, but Airheads is a better snapshot of the music industry at the time.

Hey Subby, I really like Josie and the Pussycats for a fun popcorn movie (with a decent soundtrack).

The whole boy-band parody with Seth Green, Breckin Meyer, etc. was hilarious.

Bonus trivia: Josie's singing was voiced by Kay Hanley, of Letters to Cleo fame, though I think the rest of the "band" music was provided by Powder.

laughin: 15. "Best Picture" Oscar Winners (1927-1959): From Here to Eternity (1953) | It Happened One Night (1934)
16. "Best Picture" Oscar Winners (1960-2008): American Beauty (1999)| The Apartment (1960)

THIS made me read the whole list.

FHTE was trash. Horribly acted, except Frank Sinatra was pretty good. IHON was so much fun.

AB was a horrible movie about a pedophile. The Apartment, you get to see Fred McMurray as a scumbag.

Being attracted to jailbait does not make one a pedophile. The term "jailbait" exists because teenage girls are attractive, even if legally you can't have sex with them.

/AB is overrated, though

Gunny Highway: LeafyGreens: 18. Foreign film

[2.bp.blogspot.com image 765x546]

See this movie.

I watched that in a Russian Cinema class I took in college, and I was getting along just fine having all of the horrible moments from it blocked from my memory. Don't get me wrong, it is a great film, but there is some seriously farked up shiat in there. Damn. Just... damn.

movies people love that I hate: The Wizard of OZ, Scream, and the Godfather

moves that people hate that I love: Airheads, The Collector, and pretty much every low budget slasher film imaginable

I'm not sure if the author's premise is that the underrated movies are actually better than their overrated counterparts, but even so, calling Dr. Strangelove and 2001 overrated in any context is idiocy. They're two of the best films of all time, let alone within their own genres. Even the author's respect for the Coen brothers doesn't dig him out of that hole.

I don't think he's saying the underrated ones are better than the overrated, he's saying certain movies have been talked up so long that their not AS good as people assume they are. And certain ones are better than people remember. I didn't get the impression that A is overrated and b is underrated, therefore B>A

I hesitate to include these two together simply because the criminally overhyped John Belushi shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as comic genius Jeremy Piven.

Jeremy Piven is not even remotely entertaining.

then you'll hate PCU because it's pretty much owned by Jeremy Piven. There is nothing of interest in the film that his character and his acting doesn't affect, so there would be nothing left for you to enjoy (though it's always cool to see George Clinton. And a dog chasing a frisbee, if you're into that sort of thing).

10. Movie about a pig: Charlotte's Web | Babe (As film critic critic Dann Gire once said, Babe is the Citizen Kane of talking pig movies.)

Yes, because a movie that garnered seven Oscar nominations and won one is "under rated."

Author is a retard.

11. Sam Raimi movie: Evil Dead | Army of Darkness: Evil Dead 3

Yes, because no one ever quotes Ashe, ever.

Author is a primitive screwhead.

20. Foreign film (Italy): Blow-Up | Cinema Paradiso

Yet another Oscar winner that is "under rated."

Autore è un retard

24. Movie based on a foreign book no one reads anymore: Doctor Zhivago |Dangerous Liaisons

Dangerous Liasons was nominated for seven Oscars and won three. Clearly underrated.

L'auteur de cet article est un débile

27. Incoherent movie about a hippie: Easy Rider | The Big Lebowski

O_o

Shut the fark up, Author. You're out of your league.

33. Musical: A Chorus Line | Moulin Rouge

Eight more Oscar noms (and two wins!) for the totally under rated Moulin Rouge.

Author needs a can-can danced on his head.

At this point, I have decided that the Author is a farking idiot and anyone that suffered through this steaming pile of uninformed crap will be dumber for the reading. So I stopped here.

I offer a Fark challenge! The total sum of Oscar nominations and wins for all of these under rated films, which you probably have never heard of.

Gunny Highway: This is the most overrated AND underrated "Kung Fu Real Life Cartoon Redemption Coming Of Age Gangster Love Movie"

[www.8daysageek.com image 321x480]

wiwille: Animal House is overrated. Granted I first saw it a few months ago and didn't laugh once. It may have been hilarious at the time, but it didn't age well.

Run Lola Run is underrated?

Animal House has been copied so much.
Great movies are copied and going back and looking at the original years after does'nt quite have the same impact.
Godfather comes to mind.
The worse is Stalag-17. You can't help but compare it to Hogan's Heroes. Yech!

2012-11-09 01:37:17 PM
Most overrated/underrated: Raging Bull | Metropolitan

As a yuppie New Yorker, you'd thin Metropolitan was made for me. I could barely make it through that boring mess.

Chick flick: Thelma & Louise | The Truth About Cats & Dogs

I didn't like Truth About Cats and Dogs at all but I think Thelma and Louise is a classic.

Most of the rest I agree with though.

For under-rated foreign film Ill go with: Brotherhood of the Wolf.

2012-11-09 01:47:23 PM
My first impression was gee, he likes the Coen Brothers and Whit Stillman, which is good, but otherwise his taste is horrible. He prefers the most inane Hollywood pap (Red Dawn, PCU, Big Jake) to anything that makes Christians or conservatives look bad (The Searchers, Dr. Strangelove, Aguirre, All the President's Men, Roger & Me, The Last Temptation of Christ). He calls "over-rated" films that aren't rated that highly at all to begin with (The Birds, Blow-Up). He seems to especially dislike Stanley Kubrick and Terrence Malick.

So I clicked on his bio, and good heavens! maybe I've been over-rating Stillman and the Coens all this time.

yves0010: Issue: Star Wars is not Sci-Fi! It is fantasy

Same thing. "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." -- Arthur C. Clarke

In effect Star Wars blurs the boundaries between Fantasy and Science Fiction, by combining unachievable technological wonders with an underlying primal magic (the Force).

cfreak: FTA: 7. Cold war movie: Dr. Stangelove | Red Dawn

What? They're two entirely different kinds of movies and we're comparing them because they are both about the Cold War?? Not only that but two different decades of the Cold War!

Red Dawn is only good because it's so bad. Let's be patriotic and blow up some Ruskies!
Dr. Strangelove is funny, thought provoking and brilliant.

Watch it again with fresh eyes. Red Dawn is a surprisingly depressing anti-war flick that contains the opposite message you state here. Really surprised me to watch it again as an adult and see what was actually happening.

I know this has probably been said about 50 times, but Animal House is so much better than PCU. PCU was entertaining and I happen to like Piven, so I'm not rooting against it. However there is a reason (a lot actually) why Animal House is in the National Film Registry and widely recognized as a great movie. I think setting in 10-15 years in the past of when it was produced was a stroke of genius because it was able to avoid a contemporary setting and it doesn't really show it's age. My dad loved it when it came out and I thought it was hilarious when I got the DVD as a present from my sister 30 years later. Some people say it's not funny because it didn't age well, but those people, in my experience, didn't really like the type of humor in Animal House. Hell I might just pop it in while I work!

Also this dude's list blows balls. I haven't seen a lot of the movies on it, but he's pretty much butcher the tag on everything I have seen.

I can agree with that but that's not really my problem with the article's assertion. Star Wars isn't a sequel, X2 isn't sci-fi. Like almost everything on this list he's comparing apples to oranges.

/ that's aside from the fact that X2 is mediocre at best and is in no way underrated

Some of what he said was dumb, but giving some love to Metropolitan and Eat, Drink, Man, Woman showed he at least has some good taste. Those are both very, very good movies.

The Dr. Strangelove line make me facepalm, but even the notion of comparing 2001 to Serenity is over the top ridiculous. One is a groundbreaking actual hard science fiction film, and the other is a slightly above average "sci-fi" space western action adventure film.

Some of the authors pics seem rational enough that I don't think he's completely trolling.
