cfreak: FTA: 7. Cold war movie: Dr. Stangelove | Red Dawn

What? They're two entirely different kinds of movies and we're comparing them because they are both about the Cold War?? Not only that but two different decades of the Cold War!

Red Dawn is only good because it's so bad. Let's be patriotic and blow up some Ruskies!
Dr. Strangelove is funny, thought provoking and brilliant.

This.

McGrits: I stopped freading here:

11. Sam Raimi movie: Evil Dead | Army of Darkness: Evil Dead 3

because, Evil Dead 2 is the greatest of that series.

And this.

This list isn't quantitative enough for me. (Yeah, I'm an earth scientist. I like me some numbers.) At the very least, the author could have put up Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic scores (or maybe box office returns?) to show that his definition of "overhyped" means something. A lot of his "obscure" movies were critically well received (Elf, Josie, It Happened One Night...) as far as I know.

2012-11-09 11:04:55 AM

laughin: 15. "Best Picture" Oscar Winners (1927-1959): From Here to Eternity (1953) | It Happened One Night (1934)
16. "Best Picture" Oscar Winners (1960-2008): American Beauty (1999)| The Apartment (1960)

THIS made me read the whole list.

FHTE was trash. Horribly acted, except Frank Sinatra was pretty good. IHON was so much fun.

AB was a horrible movie about a pedophile. The Apartment, you get to see Fred McMurray as a scumbag.

The Apartment was worth it for Lemmon's acting alone.

18. Foreign film (France): Breathless | Brotherhood of the Wolf (BotW is quite possibly the best French import since French Fries.)

AHAHAHAHA! Oh holy shiat that's the stupidest thing I've read all week.

If we want to play the author's game, he should have picked "Fail-Safe" for the underrated. Not that I think Strangelove is overrated in anyway, but few people have seen Fail-Safe, and more should.

With an extremely young (and actually handsome) Walter Matthau.

38. Sci-Fi Sequel: Star Wars: Episode IV (The original Star Wars) | X2: X-Men United

Technically, he's right; ANH is a sequel, but it's not even the best sequel in the Star Wars series (that honor belongs to ESB). And I would replace X2 with Wrath of Khan.

wiwille: Animal House is overrated. Granted I first saw it a few months ago and didn't laugh once. It may have been hilarious at the time, but it didn't age well.

Run Lola Run is underrated?

Would have gone with The Princess and the Warrior anyway.

2012-11-09 11:19:06 AM
He's wrong on the Crouching Tiger line. House of Flying Daggers is rated about right. But Drunken Master is criminally underrated as a film. Probably the best fight choreography (still stands ups today), pretty strong cinematography, not terrible plot, has traditional Chinese heroes in it, so there is some substance to dig into if you look into the background.

Also the SCi-fi sequal- Star Wars iV a new hope was not a sequel.

Otherwise, I like most of his choices.

Both of these films are about the search for a kidnapped family member but Big Jake has two things missing from The Searchers: love and genuine humor.)

Humor: Everything else involving Ward Bond. Though I think I can see where he's coming from concerning Martin's "wife" and some of Mose's scenes.

cfreak: AbiNormal: Yes, a story about a backwater redneck that wants to fark his sister and kill his father is the best story of all time. It's a farking lame soap opera set in space.

All of the StarWars movies are versions of the Monomyth (or Hero's Journey). If this disqualifies a movie as being "good" then we'll need to disqualify probably half the movies ever made.

What I'm saying is the writing/story/plot in all the Star Wars movies is weak, not because it is based on the Monomyth. To me it seems that George Lucas desperately wants to write for soap opera's but lacks the talent.

yves0010: AbiNormal: "26. Sci-fi movie: 2001: A Space Odyssey Star Wars (all of them) A real Sci-Fi movie | Serenity (But you have to see the entire season of Firefly on DVD before watching Serenity.)"

Fixed that for the idiot writer.

Fixed the fix.

Star Wars happens in the past (A long long time ago). Therefore, can not be Sci-Fi.

That statement is completely untrue and makes me question your sci-fi chops.

About Star Wars:

1) A New Hope is not a sequel. It is the original and everything else was a sequel or prequel.
2) Star Wars is Sci-Fi. There is enough invented/fictional technology (blasters, planet-destroying planet-sized weapons, light speed traveling space ships, droids, lightsabers...) that it must be put in this genre.

If the author wants to call Empire an overrated sci-fi sequel, I could see the argument. It is often considered one of the best sci-fi films, and generally the best of the Star Wars series and one of the easy ways to get a list of overrated movies is to take the "best" of a bunch of different categories and say why a few other should be above them.

The Big Lebowski is so blitheringly overrated that it hurts.

Truth About Cats & Dogs is terrible

I do agree that 28 Days Later is underrated as a horror movie because of its depth. And I hate to be that guy, but Crouching Tiger is a romance movie with martial arts in it, not the other way around.

Mel Gibson movie: Braveheart | Gallipoli

An intriguing pick. I like them both.

Hey. he recommended Miller's Crossing, so he must know what he's talking about.

I'm not going to read the list again, but if he had a category for modern noir, I would recommend
The Man Who Wasn't There

Thank heavens someone fixed this error.

On a side note, "Like Water for Chocolate" is a marvelous movie to start off a 'Friday night that doesn't end til Sunday' sex-a-thon. Subtle and sublime.

though I'd have to retitled the category as Funny Horror-Comedy, I would go further and say Evil Dead 2 is over-rated while Dead Alive is under-rated and better overall.

It's fantasy disguised as sci-fi. The details are all shiny and futuristic, but at it's heart it's swords and sorcery. On purpose. A nobody farmboy, with the help of a wizard, infiltrates the black castle and rescues a princess imprisoned by the evil sorcerer.

The last twenty minutes is a WWII dogfight.

There is almost no "science" in it. Just phlebotonem.

Having said that, "Empire" is the best of the Star Wars movies, and a damned good movie.

I would have picked War Games as underrated, even though the plot mirrors the Doomsday Device in Dr. Strangelove.

I don't disagree with you on the quality of Bull Durham, but it wasn't exactly underrated. Rotten Tomatoes lists it as the best reviewed sports movie of all time.

In the context of this moron's list, I think Tin Cup works.

THIS.

Let's take fiction involving science.

Ok, science suggests there could be alternate demensions, multiuple galaxies out there. Science also suggests/proves/whatever evolution is the way that species come into being.

So it is then possible that in a galaxy far, far away the evolution of the the different worlds and speicies that populate happened at a different pace then ours.

Or:

LMAO! Sci-fi only ='s future? L.M.F.A.O.

/now if you don;t want to call it sci-fi and want to call it fantasy, have at it

I see thsi was answered. If I remember right hitchcock went to close-up on something dark like a jacket when the film was running out then changed the film and pulled back out and continued shooting.

I made it to the point where it appears the author thinks Red Dawn is better in some way than Dr Strangelove.

Well they had rolls of film back then, there was no digital so after each reel they couldn't keep the continuous shooting but otherwise it was one shot.
