Gleeman: Gunny Highway: I struggled to make it to #2 after reading #1

I'll give him props for mentioning Serenity, but otherwise the list is basically "my obscure/independent film is better than your mainstream success film".

I give him props for mentioning it but it simply doesn't compare to 2001. They're two completely different kinds of movies (Hard Sci-Fi vs action-adventure in space). Besides, in terms of popularity, both of them are pretty underrated by the mainstream and most geeks think they are both great.

hey guys. I wrote an article where I just list a bunch of movies.

/babe is the pig movie.

wiwille: Run Lola Run is underrated?

That confused me too. Then I thought maybe because I came up through a foreign film loving family and went on straight to art school that my perspective was skewed.

"26. Sci-fi movie: 2001: A Space Odyssey Star Wars (all of them) | Serenity (But you have to see the entire season of Firefly on DVD before watching Serenity.)"

Fixed that for the idiot writer.

wiwille: Animal House is overrated. Granted I first saw it a few months ago and didn't laugh once. It may have been hilarious at the time, but it didn't age well.

Didn't age well? It was about a college in the 60s and was made in the 70s. There are no real special effects. Most of the humor is either sophomoric or slapstick. There's nothing highbrow at all about that movie. What's in there that "didn't age well"?

cgraves67: Gunny Highway: This is the most overrated AND underrated "Kung Fu Real Life Cartoon Redemption Coming Of Age Gangster Love Movie"

It is that bad/good

Agreed.

I liked Shaolin Soccer better (by the same guys, IIRC), but only by a little.

Agreed. I see Serenity as being a bit better than Jedi and almost as good as A New Hope. Obviously it's better than all of the prequels.

Star Wars happens in the past (A long long time ago). Therefore, can not be Sci-Fi.

I like Firefly and I like Joss Whedon's work for the most part (he could turn the sarcasm level on every single character down a notch) but while I liked Serenity, it was basically a Star Trek: TNG episode with snappier dialog. Although Summer Glau kicking ass was pretty awesome. I know it's shameless pandering to the male attraction to girls kicking ass but I'm only human.

Dr. Strangelove is funny, thought provoking and brilliant.

You're thinking of Red Dawn as a teenager, as a rah-rah action film. Think of it as a dramatic tragedy and it goes pretty deep in to the thought provoking and brilliant.

It's even funnier as a dramatic tragedy.

16. "Best Picture" Oscar Winners (1960-2008): American Beauty (1999)| The Apartment (1960)

I'm surprised that they didn't call "Crash" the most overrate Best Picture, but that's unfair because everyone has accurately rated "Crash" as pretty terrible.

Both Crash and American Beauty were horrible movies. I had to watch them for class in college and I almost walked out. Same goes for Broke Back Mountain. That movie had horrible writing and horrible acting. How the hell did these movies get Best movies when they are such God awful movies.

Yes, a story about a backwater redneck that wants to fark his sister and kill his father is the best story of all time. It's a farking lame soap opera set in space.

2012-11-09 10:43:21 AM
(I hesitate to include these two together simply because the criminally overhyped John Belushi shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as comic genius Jeremy Piven.)

And that's where I stopped reading.

1) Brokeback was nominated against Crash so it never won Best Picture.
2) Brokeback was actually well written and well acted so I don't know what movie you walked in on.

yves0010: Star Wars happens in the past (A long long time ago). Therefore, can not be Sci-Fi.

I realize that Star Wars has fantasy elements and the whole "hero's journey" that is common to fantasy, I took all the classes. But it's not also sci-fi because of the tag line that it was "a long time ago"? Sci-fi is usually about the implications of new technology on the world. The death star was new technology, a station that could destroy a planet. And it was about how they used that technology. And primitive ewoks vs the technologically superior Empire, that kind of stuff is all over sci-fi. So yeah, I'd say that Star Wars is as much sci-fi as it is fantasy.

The takes were as long as a camera could film back then, about 10 minutes. But Hitchcock did most of the cuts in a very smooth manner so one wouldn't notice most of them, and the movie itself runs in "real time".

Great flick.

The entire film was one continuous unbroken shot. Hitch cheated maybe twice but it still looked pretty seamless.

It seems like such a sweet little movie about a pig and some sheep until you start to pay attention to some of the dialog:

babe: Aren't pigs allowed in the house?
puppies: Not live ones!

There's a lot of subtle dark humor in that "children's" movie.

the comedic parts in the first comes from the amateur acting. It wasn't intentional, after the first one I think everyone realized there was comedy to be had so they it funny on purpose. I'm not saying, the first one is all funny, there are some creepy parts but the dialogue is pretty bad in a good way in places

I couldn't get past the first 20 or so of this farking pile of trolltastic shiat. Just because you like another movie better than a popular movie, doesn't make it overrated. I consider many of these "overrated" lovers to be some of the best movies of all time.

All of the StarWars movies are versions of the Monomyth (or Hero's Journey). If this disqualifies a movie as being "good" then we'll need to disqualify probably half the movies ever made.

This list isn't quantitative enough for me. (Yeah, I'm an earth scientist. I like me some numbers.) At the very least, the author could have put up Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic scores (or maybe box office returns?) to show that his definition of "overhyped" means something. A lot of his "obscure" movies were critically well received (Elf, Josie, It Happened One Night...) as far as I know.
