(YouTube)   When I get back from my honeymoon, my wife has given me the go ahead to build some cat furniture. Any suggestions from my fellow Farkers & Farkettes? Link is unrelated to topic, but is pretty cool regardless   (youtube.com ) divider line 36

Cat trees are good. You can see a photo of a cat cube here, too. That's just a hollow plywood box covered in carpet.

Walker: Cats need furniture?

Yes. If you want your own to stay nice. Cats like vertical space. They like to look down on their territory. It makes them feel secure. Plus they can scratch it and claim it with kitty pheromones.

After a lifetime of being owned by various cats, I can tell you that the only furniture a cat needs are a couple cardboard boxes, several plastic bags, and the arms of a $2,000 couch.

We put long shelves just below ceiling on the walls of the living room with several 8 foot posts wrapped in rope at various places so the cats can climb up onto the shelves, run around, jump down onto the bookshelves, run over them, jump on another shelf, then complete the loop--"skytrail" makes a complete loop of 2 rooms.

They love it, very entertaining to see them zoom up post and around the room chasing each other

Whatever you do, don't make a barkalounger.

Blackstone's idea is very good, and I have thought of doing the same for my two. But I would suggest covering all the shelves with carpet, for traction and comfort. I would also add a couple of high sleeping platforms: about a foot square or a little larger, with a raised edge (half-inch half-round is fine), also carpeted.

These things are available commercially (I forget the web site ATM), but I found their prices horrendously high.

I'd just start by putting the cats in a pile, and see if they look like anything to you. Just be sure to use the fur side out.

I'm calling shenanigans on this whole thread. If you're posting on fark there is no way you can even talk to women, let alone make one your wife

/congrats

The best cat furniture I ever had was a cardboard box.

It was even better when it was sealed and weighed down with a concrete block.

A Cat Tower of Babel to reach up to the sky, whose top may reach unto Cat Heaven and make a name for your cats, lest they be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

Slice down one side of the cat's spine, through the ribs entirely, then hollow it out. Keep the side that you opened attached at the belly, and put fasteners on the top to make a securable flap. Put a small wooden shelf in there, and place it on one side of the couch as a handy remote control holder. Be sure to reinforce the legs if you have a lot of remotes or use a heavy wood shelf.

I have one of these, made by Cloud9CatTrees.com, and they do custom work if you need something to fit to a certain space (like a downtown Toronto condo)

Excellent idea! The post idea is similar to what I was thinking about already, but the two rooms idea is pretty snazzy. Muhalo! :)

You're on your honeymoon, and you're talking to your lovely new wife about cat furniture?

2012-11-09 02:55:27 PM
will the cat use it?

mine prefer things they "find"

had great sucess with rectangular boxes made out of carboard, if they are just about the size of the cat they will be popular.

/usually the cat stage of a marraige is much later than the honeymoon stage, dont rush things too much

Can you post pics and/or a how too.

We're moving to a smaller space with 4 cats, from a whole house to a one floor. :( We want to use the vertical space as much as possible, this sounds perfect.

/Renting sadly :(

Technically, it's her house, she just lets me keep my stuff there. ;-) As far as talking about cats on our honeymoon, we've got ten of the bastards, so it's a relevant topic...constantly.

It's not bad if you're not lazy about cleaning.

1) Acquire disco ball.
2) Cut disco ball in half.
3) Apply carpet to inside of disco ball.
4) Recombine two halves of disco ball.
5) Cut 8" diameter hole in disco ball.
6) Attach disco ball to carpeted support pillar.

Congratulations, you now have a kitteh Death Star.

/Sadly, only good for one cat. Two or more cats and one of them would end up playing Porkins.

Make a sleeping area that looks like the stove in a Chinese restaurant. A carpeted wok would look pretty nice with a cat in it.

I can't believe no one suggested this yet.
