Romney was stoic as he talked to the president, an aide said, but his wife Ann cried. Running mate Paul Ryan seemed genuinely shocked, the adviser said. Ryan's wife Janna also was shaken and cried softly.

So the guy from a rich political family who's been told since day one the rules don't apply to him because he's special continued that behavior? Preposterous!

Given that Romney has had access to the best analysis money can buy I assumed he KNEW he was drawing dead, but was still swinging for the fences to keep the money coming in AND to help with downticket races -- in fact, I figured the giant Romney buy in PA was all about extra help for a GOP Senate candidate overperforming in his effort to unseat a popular D incumbent.

Now that I find out that Mr. "The Poors? You mean those who use 'domestic' Monocle Polish? Peasants. Scum." really, truly, cross-his-heart BELIEVED he was going to win it's even more hilarious.

Instead, it turned to its own internal "unskewed" polls, which it believed more accurately reflected the situation on the ground.

Why it's like they're in their own echo-chamber or adrift from reality.

Seriously, does anyone tell them there is always the possibility of losing and that they should be prepared for that?!

The behavior of Republicans and conservatives this election cycle has been the textbook definition of epistemic closure. Even now the talk is not that their message is bad, just that they went with a "moderate."

Other fun facts: The Romney campaign debuted ORCA (not an acronym, a name given because Obama's SS code name is narwhal and "Orcas eat narwhals"), a sophisticated cellphone app-based system to streamline the GOTV effort. They beta-tested it during the election. Needless to say, it was a massive failure.

Fiscal conservative Mitt Romney spent $25,000 for an 8-minute fireworks show that was to go off over Boston Harbor for his victory celebration.

And we all know about Romney's transition website, that he not only had someone wasting their time to create, but that accidentally went live after the election.

So there's your big-shot business manager, ladies and gentlemen. A born-on-third-base snake oil salesman bested by one of those "useless" community organizers.  His campaign could have been an episode of the Office.

But remember: Mitt Romney is a hyper competent technocrat who has the business acumen to get things done.

Obama, who has run two of the most impressive GOTV campaigns in history is feckless and dithery.

Yes Mr. Romney. You are totally winning, Mr. Romney. What a good idea, Mr. Romney. They have no chance, Mr. Romney. Your ideas are superior, Mr. Romney. If it wasn't for you, they would have nothing, Mr. Romney. Tax cuts for the rich will fix this, Mr. Romney. Yes, the middle class starts at 250K, Mr. Romney.

His whole administration would have operated in a echo bubble like that.

This is all so bizarre. I don't think he would have won otherwise, but wouldn't it been to his benefit to not run his campaign as if he were in the lead when he clearly wasn't? I realized he and his aides had to pretend he was in the lead when directly asked by the press. I just figured it was all posturing. BUT THEY GENUINELY BELIEVED THEY HAD THE LEAD. It makes no sense. It's making my head hurt just thinking about it.

Republicans have so internalized the faith-not-facts ethos of the religious right, the one that leads them to reject evolution and climate change, that they are incapable of understanding what happened on Tuesday

Impossible. A liberal plant could never fake that throwback webdesign without a time machine and a geocities account.

It's just so strategically backward. They should have been looking at it as the turnout they needed to ensure in order to win, rather than assuming that the turnout would ensure a win.

He has to be one of the most dedicated plants ever, to have kept it up for this long. Like the old Chinese magician in The Prestige, the real trick is that he keeps up the appearance of being an unrepentant Republican shill in every aspect of his personal and professional life -- at all times -- and has been doing it for years. Now that's dedication.

As evidence of the Romney campaign's sincere belief that the former Massachusetts governor would emerge victorious on Tuesday night, the Boston Globe reported Thursday that it had planned to fete Romney's election with an eight-minute display of fireworks over Boston Harbor.

Anyone else find it hilarious that he planned to troll his "hometown*" and failed?

*Hometowns of Willard Romney include: Boston, MA; Detroit, MI; Wolfboro, NH; and La Jolla, CA.

This is what's so baffling. It's not surprising they were trying to gull the rubes in the heartland through the press, but the campaign itself seems to have had no interest in gathering objective information about the campaign. Incredible. Yet another reason to be ecstatic Romney isn't in the White House. Imagine taking that approach to foreign and domestic policy.

(I know, we don't have to imagine. We lived through eight years of it under GWB.)
