Nice. What a dick. Hearing this story makes me even happier he was beat.

I've been amused by quite a bit of the stuff that's happened to the Republicans (much of which they've done to themselves), but that's the first thing that made me literally laugh out loud.

Suck it. Suck it hard. No, the big shots don't love you; you're used up and gone like a Sensata job.

Why are people complaining about this? Slashing benefits and cashing out a bankrupt company was the first lesson he learned at Bain.

Except . . . they lost. Didn't Romney write into their contracts that they have to pay him their wages back if he lost? That seems fair. Maybe also pay him interest?

On the one hand, this is exactly how you (nowadays) let people go from a company - the risk of them going back to their desks and wiping hard drives / stealing data / buying crap on the company card is high enough that it's more prudent to just fire them and remove the opportunity.

On the other, this is the difference between lowly staffers in politics and lowly workers in a company - if some middle manager in a company Bain buys is poorly treated on the way out, no-one's going to care about the dirty secrets he knows. If it's a staffer that has juicy quotes from Paul Ryan, though, someone's going to give him a couple thousand bucks for his book.

I'm betting it was more loving money than anything else.

"Yep, sorry. Campaign ran out of money. Yep. Every last time. Sorry."

I have had to pay for my own gas to get back home after a lost campaign... but to be fair, I had a free place to stay as long as I needed to recuperate in town. We were straight-up-out-of-money, last-bit-of-what-was-owed-came-out-of-candidate's-pocket. I could've insisted on the gas money back since mileage to and fro and all about was covered in my agreement... but I let it slide. I just wanted to go home. After I slept for most of the next 24 hours, anyway.

Yea, like I said, I doubt it. A lot of times, the people who have credit cards are office manager/assistant type roles. They may have gotten small bonuses, but I doubt they made a ton of money.

Also, that's all beside the point. They were at the event to work, their transporation should have been taken care of and cutting their cards with no notice was a dick move.

To really make a good narrative though, you need to know how it ends first. If they were smart they'd write up a ton of good anecdotes along the way, then pick the ones that prove a thesis or two and weave them together. It could be done in about 4 weeks after 11/6 if they were doing their homework along the way.

Here's another one: defeated Montana U.S. senate candidate Denny Rehberg refused to make a concession speech and stayed in his hotel room rather than go down to a banquet hall to thank his supporters and staff the night of the election. ^^^^^^^^^^

Romney's a cheapskate (and a puppet!). Adelson is the gambler.
This isn't usually discussed at the time the cards are handed out, though.
There shouldn't be any surprises as to when cards are cut off.

Also were these people merely added onto the master expense account card,
or were they forced to go through the credit check merry-go-round so that
any unpaid for charges will come out of their own pockets in the end?

I'm just not getting that vibe from this. The campaign was over, time to shut things down. I'm sure they didn't want people buying tons of shiat on the cards on their way home. This way, people fork out of pocket and have to submit receipts that show legit expenses. Every business works this way. If a business were closing its doors, they'd cancel company credit cards right away because it is easier to reimburse people for legit expenses than it is to recoup money from people you are no longer sending paychecks to for illegitimate charges they may have put on the company credit card as they were being booted out the door.

I mean, I guess I can see that this says something about Romney personally or his campaign in general... but he already lost. He's done. Who cares at this point? Does this make me MORE glad that he didn't get elected? Not even a little bit. If that makes you feel better that he wasn't elected... that's cool. It doesn't do anything for me, that's all.

No, but if I'm sacked while out of town on company business I very farking much expect to have my hotel tab picked up.

Do candidates for elected office keep donations to their campaigns for personal use after they lose or drop out? Or do those donations have to go into a greater party fund?

FULL ANSWER

As Bob Biersack from the Federal Election Commission points out, most candidates don't have much left over to begin with. Campaigning is expensive, and "leftover" money gets used for bills and debts first, including expenses incurred while winding down an abandoned campaign or a lost political office.

Candidates do sometimes end up with surplus funds, though, particularly if they're incumbent members of Congress who decide not to run for another term. State and local governments have their own rules, but those running for federal office - including presidential candidates - must abide by strict FEC guidelines when it comes to their extra campaign money. They can donate an unlimited amount to a charity or political party. They can also, within limits, make contributions directly to other candidates. A campaign committee can give up to $2000 per election to each candidate. If the committee is converted into a political action committee, the limit jumps to $5000 - but to be established as a PAC, the committee would have to be in existence for six months, receive contributions from 50 donors, and make contributions to five recipients.

What candidates can't do with leftover money is use it for personal expenses. Retiring federal lawmakers used to be able to pocket extra cash and use it for cars, vacations, clothes, pet grooming, whatever - but that changed in 1989 with the passage of the Ethics Reform Act.

theknuckler_33: tinyarena: theknuckler_33: Having a hard time thinking this is a big deal. I don't believe for a second that Romney personally had anything to do with it and I have no doubt any personal expenses will be reimbursed.

Romney got his ass kicked... it's over. I'm not interested in any manufactured outrage about him personally at this point. Who farking cares. He's done. That's all that matters.

Honestly theknuckler_33, there is a valid point to all of this. It shows us exactly what kind of people we were up against here. From the arrogance of running a sloppy campaign, to the willful ignorance of unskewing the already unskewed polls, to the indifference of not even getting their own people home, I'd say we're lucky we didn't put "those people" in charge.

/again

That's a good argument.

If they were promised one thing, however, in regards to those cards, and the promise fell through then that's not cool. Again, it depends on what the agreement was when those cards were given out and accepted. This wasn't a Joe Shoestring Budget campaign. Every i should have been dotted, and every t should have been crossed, with the amount of money and 'business experience' allegedly at the top (and that includes the top donors who were making sure this thing was well-paid for).

If they knew they were going to be reimbursed, then biatching about cards being cancelled is ridiculous. If they don't know that they will be reimbursed, or if they were told after the fact that they would not be reimbursed, that's different. Again, this type of outcome should have been spelled out at the beginning. No surprises. It's not cool that the results of this type of outcome were not spelled out. That's not professional. That's very amateur.

If this was spelled out, however, and the folks thought they had time to get a couple last minute charges in, in spite of that, then f*kk 'em for sour grapes.

The way he talks about how his community organizing shaped him as a person, and how he feels his volunteers and staff are better than he was at their age, and how they all will go on to do great things with their lives, and how profoundly thankful he is that they put their lives on hold to help him accomplish something great... Who is the Daily Gamecock? who the fk goes to USC to get a retail management degree? how is it Obama's fault she can't use a degree like that? and being a good Mormon girl (with a last name like 'Kats' I'd expect Jewish), why the fk wasn't she at BYU or Utah or Hawaii or Idaho preparing for babymaking, instead of the devil's playground LA?

and how the fk would being Mormon hold her back from holding office? was she talking out of ass, like middle schoolers who talk about being firemen and astronauts and doctors and lawyers, but who don't really have a plan it just sounds good?

Hoping it's parody.

People who went to USC and ended up in a non-West coast state tend to say they went to "Southern Cal" instead of "USC" for this very reason.

Why were they taking cabs in the first place? The way to handle this would have been to have a car service on standby, you get everyone home win or lose. If they'd won these people were going to be heading home giddy and probably drunk, the news story of one of your staffers getting killed/arrested on their way home the day after a win is not a good auspice to start your transition on.

Dear Jerk: theknuckler_33
... I have no doubt any personal expenses will be reimbursed.

Do you know how I know that you don't work in politics?

I'm a cynic too. Cry me a river when people come forward about not being reimbursed, OK? I like facts, not speculation.

I'm hardly a cynic. A political campaign that's over is like a bankrupt business. There are three levels:
1 winner.
2 loser.
3 loser who won't be back.
Romney is a businessman. Someone made a decision to cut funds at a certain time. Cab rides into the sunset don't bring in votes. He'll be working out terms with American Express as it is. I've been around enough political campaigns. Just wait for stories about his campaign debt. It's part of the news cycle.

theknuckler_33: I'm not interested in any manufactured outrage about him personally at this point.

When did this meme get started that laughing at a laughingstock is indicative of "outrage?"

At best, some of us are hoping that the outrage produced by people personally slighted will provide us with a tell all book of the campaign for more laughter material but I don't think anyone here is expressing any sort of outrage over this act.

We find it funny because this is exactly the kind of cartoon stingy rich guy behavior you'd expect from, say, Scrooge McDuck or Monty Burns. Some middle manager at the campaign, through being thoughtful enough to cancel the cards (or schedule them to be canceled at midnight the night of November 6th) while also being thoughtless enough not to give the staffers a heads up that it was going to happen managed to bring to life a caricature of Romney and, through him, the party he represents.

It's a living political cartoon exemplifying the idea of people who care so much about the bottom line that they think to go after such a niggling, little detail while ignoring relationships and the people involved and that's just a continuation of the joke that started with mockery of his Big Bird line.

If it's not funny to you, that's fine and dandy. But, c'mon, we're not Fox News here and we can and are mocking and criticizing without turning the outrage dial up to potato at every misstep.

Not that I'm surprised one bit, mind you.

No, they were told their expenses would be covered, regardless of the outcome that night. The Romney campaign went back on its word. Plain and simple.

One of my friends worked for the campaign. Her credit card was turned off well before midnight. In fact, it was deactivated after Pennsylvania was called, well before the end of the election night. She ended up leaving early and flew back to Minnesota that evening, on her own personal credit card. She also noted that most staffers were unable to book flights back to their home states on the cards, despite being told only hours earlier that the campaign would pay for it.

This was her 3rd presidential campaign job and says she's never been more disgusted by Romney's treatment of his staff in the final hours. She also said the McCain campaign not only paid for her flights home in '08, but she was offered a job in McCain's congressional office after the election. Most of Romney's staffers will likely be unemployed until Inauguration Day.

EDIT: She's just told me that the hotel rooms were NOT prepaid and many of the younger intern staffers, some that were paid minimum wage, were frantically calling their parents from Boston, post election morning, asking them to pay for the rooms!

EDIT 2: Just to clarify for those who messaged me... Yes, she basically was given her pink slip halfway through election night. When her card was deactivated, she knew she was unemployed at that point. It's why she flew home so soon. She was at the airport waiting to catch a redeye when Romney gave his concession speech.

It's like putting the dog on the roof of the car. I'm sure it hit the younger people hardest. If the reddit comment is correct the GOP just burned the cheerleaders of the age group they need the most.

Someone asked about posting the newsroom-l item rather than the NBC link. Selfishness, I guess. It's not like the site makes any money or ever will. The source was a blog item that linked to another blog item that actually had the original link. I pulled out the part I wanted and posted it with a link to the full story, which is basically filler. I want to keep the focus on the credit card incident alone.

I haven't done much with newsroom-l in quite a while. I had to hurriedly fix the worst glitches that had crept in. Look at that -- a sentence with a split infinitive ending with a preposition. Lets have an argument about it. It will be like the EngSoc meeting in Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Obama should offer to pay their bills.
1) it'd be a classy thing to do since Obama really loves his campaign staff and I'm sure appreciates that the Romney field staff were just kids trying to fight for what they believe in.

2) it'll serve a political purpose to draw attention to the fact that the GOP are a-holes. Treat their campaign staff just like they do the american workers-- that they care/pay for them only up to the last second they are no longer needed, then immediately boot them to the curb.

That statement is pretty much untrue, except the increasing debt part, which has been happening every year since Reagan. However, Obama ended one war that Bush started (both wars off the books until Obama took office, BTW), is going to end the Afghanistan war on a defined timetable, which Ryan himself said he doesn't intend to do and we're not going into Iran, which Romney had every intention of doing.

KarmicDisaster: impaler: jules_siegel: EDIT: She's just told me that the hotel rooms were NOT prepaid and many of the younger intern staffers, some that were paid minimum wage, were frantically calling their parents from Boston, post election morning, asking them to pay for the rooms!

At least Romney taught them something valuable.

Just ask your parents! What's the problem?

The cards were cut off because Romney has dibs on the leftover campaign money. He will be millions richer.

I don't think it works that way. Though he might manage something with sufficiently skillful money laundering, I doubt it. He'll get rich indirectly from book deals, speaking fees, and the like, but my utterly uneducated guess is that after paying himself back for any personal expenditures during the campaign, the campaign money will likely go into the general GOP coffers for use in 2014.

Sucks to be the volunteers, but I'm not surprised. Decades ago I used to work in a little print shop and I learned from the owner that you never bill for campaign stuff, you require full payment from those folks up front.

Yes, Adelson gave Romney $100mill directly to him. I'm sure he's going to turn over what's left to the GOP. Because if there's one thing Romney cares about, it's the greater good.

I find it amusing that members of the party of personal responsibility are choosing to blame Romney for their own refusal to buy tickets for their return flights.

It's a bootstraps joke. And it works.

I second the idea of the Obama campaign at least offering to cover the expenses of those Romney staffers who were left in the lurch. Because then it would force the GOP to step up and do the right thing here, else they be made to look like even bigger a-holes than they already are. It basically puts the Romney campaign back in a position they should be getting quite cozy in since Tuesday night - between a rock and a hard place.

What a weasel... and to think he was damn near our President!

As someone who had one of Romney's campaign offices in the first floor of his office building and had to put up with their asshole behavior and arrogance, this story warms the cockles of my heart

Clutch2013: stratagos: Thank you for all your hard work, but your services are no longer required

Suddenly, I picture Romney with an AK-47 laying waste to his entire campaign staff.

/send a maniac to catch a maniac
//blast from the past
///no way in hell this is obscure

The best part is the Republicans thought they were the ones playing Stallone. What with the black guy running around looting and destroying until he's stopped by the Italian Stallion.

/they forgot the detail that Phoenix had been set free to rampage by the smirking white authoritarian
//you can't take away people's right to be assholes!
