Honestly if anyone ever hires Eric Fehrnstrom again, even if it's just manning the burger line, they deserve what's coming for them. Remember that this fool was chief adviser both for Romney and for Scott Brown. I'm sure the endless harping on "Fauxahontas" was his brilliant plan.

brigid_fitch: The ridiculous overconfidence from this moron I can understand. But a fireworks display in MA, where he never had any hope of winning?

That alone says so much, doesn't it? He lost not just his home state and the state where his father was governor, but his running mate's home state as well. The takeaway from that seems to be that those who know them best don't much care for them.

It wasn't a rumor that he hadn't written a concession speech.

CBS: Romney shellshocked by loss
Romney was stoic as he talked to the president, an aide said, but his wife Ann cried. Running mate Paul Ryan seemed genuinely shocked, the adviser said. Ryan's wife Janna also was shaken and cried softly.
"There's nothing worse than when you think you're going to win, and you don't," said another adviser. "It was like a sucker punch."
Their emotion was visible on their faces when they walked on stage after Romney finished his remarks, which Romney had hastily composed, knowing he had to say something.

Imagine the kind of bubble he would have been living in as president.

What's next, a story that Romney was planning to use his $250 million to construct a giant laser to write "ROMNEY/RYAN 2012" on the farking Moon?

Nate Silver says there are still about 10 million votes to be counted. So...turnout wasn't actually down from 2008.

This sort of thing is why I'm VERY relieved that Romney didn't win.

If he was lacking people on his team that could analyze things well enough to realize that not preparing for a possible loss would be silly; imagine what it'd have been like as President.

How much information would this guy ignore or misread in whatever decisions he made?
It'd have been a disaster for the USA.

"But as it turned out, many of those independents were former Republicans who now self-identify as independents. The state polls weren't oversampling Democrats and undersampling Republicans - there just weren't as many Republicans this time because they were calling themselves independents. "

Ouch.

jules_siegel: qorkfiend: Losing this election was a professional failure of colossal magnitude by Romney's campaign staff.

Sounds like the Night of the Brown Nosers meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The brown nosing variety of pod people circles a mirror-gazing rich dork.

And you know who is 100% responsible? CEO in Chief Mittens Romney.

qorkfiend: Antimatter: I'm loving this. The GOP must have been in a bubble or something. It don't think anyone int he national party of any note thought victory was anything but an absolute certainty.

It would interesting if we could get any numbers on how the differences in how the race was portrayed affected turnout. For the last month, the Democrats have all been "OMG OMG WE'RE GONNA LOSE" despite all of the data that said otherwise, and the GOP has been "Chill the fark out, we got this", again despite all of the data that said otherwise.

Ah, what? The Dems stated the first debate was bad, but was confident as the polls still showed a lead. After debate 2, the enthusiasm returned, and we were hyped.

The GOP, on the other hand, felt they had it in the bag, and refuse to acknowledge the falling mitt poll numbers after the bounce.

We walked into election night earful of only election tampering, but otherwise very confident. The GOP walked into it expecting a Romney landslide, despite no real pools showing any hope for them.

From the same article:

1. They misread turnout. They expected it to be between 2004 and 2008 levels, with a plus-2 or plus-3 Democratic electorate, instead of plus-7 as it was in 2008. Their assumptions were wrong on both sides: The president's base turned out and Romney's did not. More African-Americans voted in Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida than in 2008. And fewer Republicans did: Romney got just over 2 million fewer votes than John McCain.

I don't buy it. Romney got 2 million fewer votes than McCain, but Obama got 9 million fewer votes than Obama the first time around. Both bases were depressed, but clearly Obama's was more depressed.

With all the reports of lines, though, I don't get how turnout was 11 million voters less than 2008. Maybe more people are disenchanted.

I don't really ever get into the Mormon bashing, but things like this really have me convinced that he really believed that he was the White Horse prophecy, and therefore that his victory was preordained. It was the "I didn't bother to write a concession speech" that convinced me. Farking everyone writes a concession speech, much less people who are behind in virtually every poll.

Yeah, but he cancelled his staffer's campaign credit cards before they could use them to get back to their own homes, so that proves that he would be just the hardass we need.

The one and only thing that was always constant with Mitt Romney: you could always count on him being a massive dick.

When you surround yourselves with people complicit in creating an alternate reality it is never going to be pretty when actual reality sticks its dick in your pooper.

And it's sad when you realise that the same mathematics you need to perform analysis like Nate Silver did is the same population statistics needed in econometric analyses and, well, making good economic decisions. Not seeing it coming means they didn't have people on their team that could make the simple deductions.

It makes sense, in that it's well known they don't want to know about marginal economic stimulus utility, or where real tax breaks versus tax burden should go in a recession, but still. It's sad.

Oh, good, a little "F-You" to the people of my state who inexplicably took him in, made him Governor, and gave him the idea he was a popular politician.

Now I feel a little better about him losing, and I didn't think that was possible.
