You know what Foxconn? We'll keep the design, support infrastructure jobs for those iThingies here and you can keep the mindless insert tab A into slot B jobs and environmental disaster for yourself.

The obvious answer is to hire more workers for $0.25 per day. Duh. You can hire ~150 people to one US worker and still come out ahead, and statistical probability says one of them will figure it out.

This. I worked with Chinese manufacturing companies at my last job. Not that awesome. We had to come back to America for a lot of things and they couldn't supply chain worth a damn. Oh this is Taiwan not mainland China but why would he want things to come back to America? Is he planning on opening the companies himself? Also, the problem we had was mainly finding people trained to do electronics. It wasn't that easy to find.

I remember when (dating myself here--if no one else will, I must) surface mount tech came in to e-. There were something like two million mostly middle-aged women assembly workers tossed on the street. No warning, nuthin'.

We call Taiwan "China" now, subby? Why do you hate freedom?

But seriously ... how much of this business is Taiwan, and how much is PRC? Article is short on details.

Farking Fox can turn anything into a lie. The truth is that Apple's request (requirement?), Foxconn is considering opening a factory in the US and transfer iPhone manufacturing to it.

I believe Mr. Gou might want to review US history with regards to slavery and company towns. He forgets that US citizens already know about and reject both.

The only answer to him in that scenario is to provide him with the text of the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution and the relevant portions of the Bill of Rights. Then tell him that the US already answered the question about desperate workforce with a resounding NO.

And, and, and around this factory was a fence, a huge fence with barbed wire and guard towers. And, and, we said gosh! I can't believe that you, you know, keep these girls in! They said, no, no, no. This is to keep other people from coming in.

I don't know if it's trolling. At my last job a bunch of right-wing teabaggers had no shortage of personal finance advice to offer despite everyone else have more financially secure households.

As long as it's not in an RTW state and with a significant (non-Apple) US controlling interest, perhaps it would work well.

Foxconn is moving towards even more automated factories. (Japanese style I assume)
They won't need all the workers on the mainland soon, so I assume he's just looking to smooth things for when they move production elsewhere.

ah yeah:

But Gou says he hopes the Americans can learn how factories are operated so they can return home to set up facilities with automated equipment to resolve the lack of skilled laborers.

yep, there it is.

Maybe after a few years of growing pains. We will need to transition some of our Mexican slaves from agriculture to tech. It won't happen overnight.

Umm...companies do this all the time. You go to one factory, wherever it may be, and take note of their manufacturing details so that you can replicate them in your other factory. Factories that have been operating for a while, it's likely that they've made some slight changes to the process that aren't so easily transferable to a new factory.

Skilled laborers implies that there are skills that workers don't have when that is simply not so.

The only skill that Foxconn can train is pliancy to a business.

Sure, but that's a trick as well. Foxconn opens a "factory" in the US, but actually 90% of the actual building of the component is done already at the same Chinese factories and it is shipped to some small US facility where a few American workers assemble said component into the plastic case. BFD.

A more aggressive pursuit of industrial policy would change that in the favor of the US, but followers of Hayek do not want that.

As I understand it, iPhones are only assembled in China. The components are made in a number of locations, including the US. No electronic device has all components manufactured and assembled in a single location. Those days have been gone for nearly a century.

There are many China factories and warehouses in America, many right here in NJ. Many are almost fully automated, and many have workers from China. The USA government gladly pretends these are highly specialized intense skill positions which demand personnel from outside the USA. Same holds true for all sorts of Asian companies with holdings in America. Nothing new. And your government gives these crackerjacks all sorts of sweet tax breaks/incentives too, all while there are no employment opportunities for you and yours that recite The Pledge Of Allegiance.

If I was President ITG I'd have alarms set off (clear out employees) 40 minutes before having those Foxconn plants leveled to the ground using good old Made In USA explosables. Farking people can buy Samsung, I don't give a crap. Teach those Chinese shiatheads to make cracks in teh newspapers.

American companies outsource labour to China, and people biatch about not having these jobs.

Solution: Either work for slave wages or
STOP BUYING CRAP MADE IN PART OR WHOLE IN CHINA!

But noooo... save a few pennies by shopping at WalMart. You deserve your misery.
