cgraves67: What about women in general? I don't know a single woman who will accustom herself to lower, energy-saving thermostat settings in the winter.

This.

I gave my last gf two options:
1. It is my house and my thermostat-dress accordingly.
2. I'll set it at 85 but you walk around at minimum half naked.

She put on a sweater.

umad: Koodz: Yep. I'm not going to bring up anything being "unnatural" or anything like that but it appears to be stressful on the body to be unnaturally hot in the winter and unnaturally food in the summer.

I would imagine it is stressful on the body to be food any time.

God damn my phone.

in the old days older folks were moved closer and closer to the fire each year. When they got to old to do any productive work or tell amusing stories they were called logs. That saved the entire family on cremation or burial in the winter when the ground was too cold and firewood was to valuable to waste.

Old is cold.

I'm torn between recommending the solutions found in Logan's Run or Soylent Green.

Logan's Run. Do you want to eat a wafer that tastes like Werther's, menthol, and used tissues?

get real: Old people have very thin skin, why aren't they in Florida? Otherwise turn the farking heat up.

NO. GOD DAMMIT STOP SENDING THEM HERE.

Seriously, stop, enough of them already find it on their own.

Seems now my area is becoming a senior hotspot. They are here in numbers like never before. We are about 30 minutes from Springhill & Brooksville, which used to be the place to go for oldies, until it got overpopulated and overpriced. Now they have discovered my area, still cheap & plentiful housing, and not overcrowded...yet.

Having your roads and stores crowded with old people from out of state makes it a real pain in the ass to go about daily life.

Contents Under Pressure: umad: Contents Under Pressure: So, if you want your girlfriend to walk around half naked, get new windows and have the insulation checked at the house...or go out with someone who has a nice seal-like layer of blubber.

We don't want our girlfriend to walk around naked. We want to not be sweating our balls off in our own house. You can always wear more clothes if you are cold. There isn't shiat you can do about being too hot. That said, we get it. It is our job to suffer to make your life more comfortable.

I own the house. So, in your imaginary scenario, tough titty.

Besides, if you are sweating your balls off when it's 72 degrees, you may want to address your own personal insulation issues.

And I own my own home, so equally tough titty to my GF. Perhaps LITERALLY tough titty. It is also, and this is just my own opinion, far more comfortable to throw on an extra layer than sit there with the furnace drying everything out and making everyone in the house sick more often. So ya, cooler is cheaper and better. 72 degree thermostat unless you have awesome climate control is never going to be a constant 72 in my experience. Not with a furnace anyways, I have baseboard heating now, and its delightful. So delightful that if I had a gf concerned with temperature I might just let it be hot and walk around naked myself. If it is 75 or above, somebody oughta be naked.

also, umad: speak for yourself. I would be pleased as punch if my gf had picked that option.

That guy sounds like my grandpa. If he was cold, he'd put on a sweater. If he was still cold, he'd put on a jacket. If he was still cold, he'd put on a parka. I imagine the next step would be to crawl inside a ton ton. Child of the depression and such.

My farking wife. 70 is too hot for her. Sets it at 67. Then opens the bedroom window when it's farking ten degrees outside.
I like a nice comfy 72

Send her here. Nipples stick out proudly when it's cold.

Then she ditched you for a richer and/or stupider man, right?

Being alone is cheaper in many ways. And less aggravating and quieter. And there's more booze for me.

Make sure you come back to the link and read the Herald commenters. Those working class Herald readers (white, racist, not working, collecting unemployment and spending it on cigarettes and TV's and fellating Howie Carr) will be sure to tell us that the thermostat should be set to whatever a hard working white man's tax dollars say it should be set to.

When I moved to Japan I had a typical poorly insulated apartment so I cranked the heater up all night and paid what it cost. After that first winter I was talking with Japanese coworkers who were horrified that I left the heater on at night. I told them I got colds in the winter but who doesn't?

Next winter I left the heater off. I felt astoundingly better every morning all winter long.

Too much climate control in America

I don't set the thermostat higher than 65, and it's often lower than that. Usually I'll put another blanket in the bed and turn the furnace off at night. But then I'm paying my own bills on a small fixed income and don't have to sit around naked in the middle of winter.

Bundle up like they did before 1900. It's much cheaper so there's more left for booze. By the way, Black Grouse isn't very much like a "regular" blended Scotch and might throw you at first but then it's easy to like a lot. Not bad for $25 a fifth. Now excuse me while I get my jacket.
