(ESPN)   Orlando Magic pissed after Joakim Noah launched end-of-game three-pointer to win free Big Mac for everyone in attendance, mostly because Big Baby wouldn't have gotten one   (espn.go.com ) divider line

Joakim Noah has made zero three-pointers in his career (out of now six attempts). It's not like there was any chance it was going in.

/also, I dunno, but I'd be cool with people launching shots at the end of a game to try to win fans a free something-or-other. I mean, if we lost, we lost. They're obviously not doing it to rub it in, they just want to score free stuff for people.
//also, as one of the people who used to have to hand out those coupons for similar things after games, I say f*ck Joakim Noah for trying that sh*t and Hinrich would be my favorite player ever for bricking two FTs with 10 seconds left to ensure I didn't have to go out and hand 'em out
///people WILL try to assault you for an extra free Chalupa

This is so silly.  Sports is for the fans, in the end.  I think what he did was kinda cool.  And by kinda I mean he should have passed it off to someone who's actually hit a 3 pointer in their career.

We don't actually have the corndogs!

2012-11-08 02:16:51 PM
I didn't see anything in the article about the Magic being pissed.

2012-11-08 02:21:35 PM
I remember when Sasha Vujacic did this (and succeeded) to get everybody in the building free tacos.

Everybody still hates Sasha.

It's not like it was a blowout and he was rubbing it into the other teams face, I doubt 3 more points is going to upset the other team.

Maybe he should have dropped the ball and went and hugged the losing team because of their devistating loss.

2012-11-08 02:24:05 PM
It's funnier when someone has to hit a free throw or two in order to get to the free food. In the 90's with the Bulls, Joe Kleine got dubbed "Taco Joe" after hitting free throws with a few seconds left to get them the points needed.

2012-11-08 02:28:32 PM
Who's even pissed off by this besides the media? Did anyone on Orlando take any offense?

2012-11-08 02:28:51 PM
For the Raptors a few years ago, fans had become more invested in the the 'free pizza score' than the outcome of even the close games.

Awesome!

2012-11-08 02:32:26 PM
Actually, the Magic should be pleased. Having Joakim Noah shoot that shot was one way to guarantee the Bulls wouldn't run up the score.

Game was over, it was a meaningless shot to give the fans some free food. They're the ones paying all the money for the seats. Maybe the corporate sponsor was pissed.

Boohoo, sports is for the fans. I remember Roger Clemens trying to strike someone out for free wiper fluid at some point when he was making a comeback through the minors.

I am confused. Are they mad because they were already winning and he shouldnt have tried to run up the score. If this is the case then why have a promotion that encourages the score to be run up in favor o the fans.

are they mad because hes terrible and took the shot? Dude wanted to be the Big mac hero.. its probably the only time someone would refer to him as a hero in his entire career.

Are they upset that they DIDNT get the big mac promotion for the fans?

are they upset that they TRIED to get the big mac promotion for the fans?

There is something missing in this article and i think it starts with a journal and ends with an ism.

The guy was having fun. The fact that this is a story is confusing.

2012-11-08 03:25:52 PM
He only needed one point. Why didn't he go for a shot he could make, like a lay-up or a dunk?

2012-11-08 03:30:08 PM
Subby and modmin should have a free Big Mac stuffed up their ass for the autolaunch link.

2012-11-08 04:03:29 PM
A local sub shop here used to have (not sure if they still do) $2 6-inch subs after each Royals victory. They don't have to worry about handing out too many $2 6-inch subs.

stupid article.

Negative points for the PTI plug.

I guess they're mad he didn't pass it to someone who had a better chance to make the shot. Because one of the main things on a player's mind should be the game-ending free-burger play strategy.

jayhawk88: Who's even pissed off by this besides the media? Did anyone on Orlando take any offense?

exactly. why the fark wouldn't he take the shot? the point of professional sports is to make the fans like your team enough that they spend their money and tax dollars on the team. jacking up a shot so everyone can get a big mac is a good thing. the fans want their big macs. not shooting it would be stupid. hell, given that noah can't shoot, there were 3.8 seconds left, and they only need one point, he should have driven to the hoop.

2012-11-08 04:43:47 PM
What's wrong with that, you Mickey Mouse Mamma's Boys down in Orlando??

Its professional sports, there is no such thing as "running up the score". In the pros, if you don't want your opponents to score on you farkING STOP THEM!

I actually like Joakim Noah much more after reading the article.

/free big macs and bypass surgery for EVERYONE

2012-11-08 04:59:10 PM
I dont understand why anyone would get mad at him. Game was over. Nothing left to do. But win free big macs. Guys gonna be a fan favorite if he keeps doing this.

As a Magic fan, I have to say:

Good on you Joakim, you goofy-looking weirdo.

I feel like someone could make a fairly entertaining parody of Jukebox Hero with this scenario in mind, but I'm too lazy to do it

The St. Louis Blues used to have a similar promotion for 29 cent tacos at Taco Bell with 5 Blues goals at home games. When they'd get to 4 goals the crowd would start chanting "We want tacos!" and it would get pretty loud. Then if the 5th goal got scored everyone would switch to chanting "We got tacos!"

I heard that happened for the Blue Jays too. A couple of my friends went to all 30 stadiums, and one of their favorite stories from that whole saga is from when they went to Toronto. There was a promotion where everyone got a free pizza if the Blue Jays struck out X guys. When it got to the 9th inning the game was a blowout, but the Blue Jays were at X-2 strikeouts. People were going nuts. Apparently there were many hilarious cries of "PIZZAAAAA! PIZZAAAAAAAAA!" They got it on the last batter, to much more rejoicing than you would expect for the last out of a blowout.

The Islanders have a promotion where you get free Wendy's chili if they score 3 goals or more in regulation at home. Think it was 5 goals in the 80's.

Wendy's chili is pretty awesome.

Who's pissed? Yeah the coach gave him a talking to but it probably went something like this.

Coach: Look, everyone gets caught up in the moment but a lot of weird things can happen in four seconds and a six point lead isn't a guarantee. You should know that by now.
Noah: Yeah, I just got carried away.
Coach: Damn right you did. And next time either pass the ball or try and take a shot you can actually make you numbskull, I wanted a Big Mac too!
*coach then pats Noah in an appropriately sporty area*

I would also like to go on record as saying I support Noah for his shenanigans and I hope he does it again in the future.

I also agree with those who said it's for the fans. It's more exciting when you are rooting for your team to break the 100 mark barrier. Happened to me with the Sixers and the Thunder last year. Of course, Andre Uglydala missed free throws to seal the loss and the sub 100 game.

Glad he's gone!
