If only there was some kind of tax cut that was set to expire then it would be really easy to raise revenue.

Do these morons realize the are not bargaining from a position of power?

Well. If Obama wants to get reelected, he will not just let that tax cut expire.

/Oh...wait.

Yeah they are. They know from personal experience that Obama is going to give in and get nothing back. That's what happened every time he "negotiated" with Congress.

I have a small, very very small, bit of hope he finally got that the gop will never negotiate in good faith. It was in his speech on Tuesday, just a couple of lines.

Dear House Republicans,
Get ready to compromise or get ready to be run over. Obama's got a bully pulpit and he won't be afraid to use it. If you try and stick to your "100% or nothing" tactic, then you'll get nothing.

2012-11-08 01:49:31 PM
To be fair, Obama is only really 8/10 president. 3/5 if you believe in one drop.

So for Republicans 3/5

They are in a strong bargaining position. They will pass a full continuance of the Obama/Bush tax cuts and when it gets stopped in the Senate or vetoed, they will scream that the Dems made everyone's taxes to go up. With them holding the house no other legislation can be crafted to do the Obama split.

2012-11-08 01:54:05 PM
The problem is that farking Grover Norquist pledge. Those doofuses absolutely will not ever vote yes on anything that raises any taxes because of their sworn allegiance to that pledge. It's so dang dumb that we have elected legislators who have sworn off a potential tool simply for image or something.

Don't most polls show that the mandate of the people is that taxes should go up on the rich?

Huge GOP loss: WE MUST FIGHT AGAINST THE INFIDEL IN THE STRUGGLE FOR THIS GREAT NATION.

Anything in between: pick one of the above at random.

dietbubba: Don't most polls show that the mandate of the people is that taxes should go up on the rich?

Nope.

And the fact that the republicans lost seats in both the Senate and the House while their golden-boy Mitt got stomped into the dirt just goes to show that the American people are sending a clear message. A message that democrats better watch their asses because clearly the people support the republican agenda.

Indeed. They aren't doing the "will of their constituents" they are only doing the will of Grover.

All these *mandates*. Ain't that kinda' gay for the Republicans?

2012-11-08 01:58:26 PM
Actually that is not a bad idea. Keep the tax rates where they currently are, but remove all deductions from both the personal and corporate income taxes. An easy progressive system where we are no longer using the tax code to encourage behaviors, but have to enact new programs that would look a whole lot like welfare for the middle class and rich to achieve those same results.

Sure! If the American people didn't support the Republican agenda, the Democrats would have won 100% majorities in the House and Senate and the Presidency with 538 electoral votes. The simple fact that there is at least one Republican in national elected office means there's a mandate!

It's likely asking too much, but I hope Obama calls the House GOP on all their BS for the next two years. Accomplishing nothing is fine -- but call out these guys specifically by name and point fingers. Make it his goal to take the House in 2014 so he can spend the last couple years getting reasonable measures passed.

/Cuz, you know, Obama won't care about the corporate money anymore....

If we allow the Bush tax cuts to expire and sequestration to happen, the deficit will be cut in half for FY 2013, and by 70% over the next 10 years.

DO IT.

It'll be fun when the cliff hits and the "fiscal conservative" House Republicans start arguing in favor of a bigger deficit, a more unbalanced budget, and more debt in order to finance tax cuts and military spending.

I have no illusions that the Debt will ever decrease until my generation can wrestle control away from the delusional baby boomers. These assclowns in congress are biatching and fighting tooth and nail to reduce a 5% sequestration as if otherwise the Earth will fly off its orbit. Yet, the federal gov't has borrowing 10-40 cents for every dollar spent for over a decade. They are perfectly happy telling their constituents that they can correct our fiscal problems without any sacrifices.

Republicans get spanked in any election that isn't gerrymandered. It's not a national mandate, you twats. It's your illiterate voters who live in districts with borders that were determined by how far you could throw a beer can from the back of a pickup.

G.O.P.: BEST CANDIDATE EVER!

That's...a horrible idea.

Like amputating your leg over an infected paper cut. Like burning down Chicago because you spilled a milk jug. Like electing a tax-cutting Republican because a Democrat didn't expand Medicare enough. Like disbanding the military rather than paying lower-level enlisteds a livable wage. Like throwing every child under 6mos old out a skyscraper's top window because your own child's ablutive waters got murky.

Sequestration doesn't just mean taking $700B out of the hands of Boeing, Lockheed, GD, etc - it means they'll be losing thousands of jobs. Directly. On such things as threat assessments for US attorneys. Developing military medical research databases. And yes, weapons research and other death-and-destruction-related R&D.

If you're about to counter that we can cut weapons programs and systems the military doesn't need and didn't ask for, that's very different from "sequestration". In fact, naming names and being specific about what to cut was what was supposed to happen to PREVENT sequestration in the first place!
