I think Susan Rice would be a solid choice for Sec. of State, but as the article mentions Republicans are almost certain to use it as another opportunity to hammer away at their narrative on Benghazi.

Good. Maybe they'll find someone who isn't a piece of furniture as far as regulation goes.

Obama:

"A couple of days after the election Joe Biden asked me to consider appointing him as the next Secretary of State. Considering his experience in the Senate and as Vice President, I know there's no one better qualified for the post, but I had to ask why. He explained that he knew what a critical time this was for our foreign policy and wanted to finish out his political career in this incredibly important post."

"So it's with mixed emotions that I announce today that Joe Biden will be our next Secretary of State. His long and distinguished...."

"Taking Joe's place as Vice President will be ___________, Governor of the great state of ________."

BOOM, HEADSHOT

He is a little short of experience for that job.

I'd laugh my ass off if Bill Clinton replaced Hillary as Secretary of State.

Seriously, that would be awesome. And Republican tears will flow like waterfalls.

It'd be kind of annoying even for us Dems.

The Presidential Cabinet should not be a Gentlemen's Club of past administrations.

I don't believe he can serve any Cabinet position. They are all in line to assume the presidency in some order, and I believe that bars any two-term President from appointment.

My suggestion Kerry for Sec. of State, if Patrick would appoint Barney Frank to Kerry's senate seat if for no other reason than to watch the right wingers heads explode!

Mmm. I think you're right. Okay, appoint Biden as Secretary of State and appoint a popular moderate Democratic governor to be VP.

Nope, they just skip over that person in succession order. Sec of State Albright was not eligible to be president either.

I was having this conversation yesterday with someone, and we couldn't figure this out. We were torn between would he be disallowed, or would he simply be skipped over in the event of succession?

He would be skipped, just like any else not eligible due to age or foreign born.

Actually, the 22nd Amendment only limits the election to office after having been elected twice (or once if having served more than two unelected years), so I think Bill wouldn't even be skipped.

Well, for me, I would hope it would be someone that I didn't get politically frustrated with to the point of where I voted against him his second term.

While there's no problem with picking a Republican, Christie doesn't really have the "demeanor" needed in a secretary of state.

I'll never understand why Obama would want to give an important post like Secretary of defense to a Republican. It just shows where he stands on these issues, just to the left of the republicans and it shows his fear of them. As soon as he chose gates to be Secretary of Defense, before his inauguration, I knew Obama was a sell-out.

Oh you misunderstood, I was saying Biden as SoS, and Christie as VP. Gives CC a springboard to 2016, and the ability to be off-script and whackadoodle at time given the luxuries of VP-status.

/Only downside I see is it reduces the disincentive of potential assassins that Joe or and Dem provides.

Hmm, looks like this is the most correct answer, barring SCOTUS weighing in. And I really hope that never has to happen.

You don't have to be eligible to be President in order to be a member of the cabinet.

runwiz: As soon as he chose gates to be Secretary of Defense, before his inauguration, I knew Obama was a sell-out.

Obama chose Gates because he's competent and he knew Gates would get buy-in from the military on the reforms he wanted to do. He played a big part in the military treating the repeal of DADT as a big fat nothingburger.
