I got a flat tire driving home in it at 1130 last night...I got a ride home, but my car is probably plowed in right now. I don't even want to think about it. I'm just thankful I have power...lots of people still didn't have it back from the hurricane, and more lost power last night because of this snow storm. I'm not sure I've ever seen 8 inches of snow this early in the season before.

Don't know about NY but we got nearly a foot of snow in CT last October. The leaves were still on the trees and the damage was amazing. No power for a week or more and lots of fun.

yeah, last halloween we got about an inch (long island)...I guess it was worse elsewhere, but that was about as much snow as we got all winter last year.

/It's been a farking madhouse all week so far

I was on a bus by 4PM. Told my boss I'd log in from home, which I did. On the way home, heard the dispatch advising of a break down in the Lincoln. I think if you are stupid enough to drive a car that is on the verge of breaking down into a Hudson River crossing, the punishment should be that your car is unceremoniously bulldozed out of the tunnel until it is a pile of useless debris, which then needs to be removed from the premises at the driver's expense.

I also think the HOV restrictions at the tunnels should be made permanent.

And that NJ Transit should spend less capital on palatial rail stations and transfer stations and more money on hardening their systems against barely Cat -1 storms. Another tunnel under the Hudson would be nice too, but our governor didn't think that was important. Yet, he sure seems to care about the "people of New Jersey" these past few weeks. I haven't seen him at the PA or Secaucus Transfer Station yet.

End rant. I guess what I am really trying to say is, fark this and I am tired of this place.

Last Halloween we had maybe an inch of snow on the ground in central Jersey and it melted the next day, but the real problem was that there were still leaves on the trees that just collected the snow and then broke the trees under the weight. At least Sandy got rid of most of the leaves last week.

Your cousin must live west of the tracks in a nice house. Mine are less than half that. I bought a small house for the location: close to town and the train (which just got a $40M station it didn't really need and is inoperable right now anyway).

Taxes in north jersey in general are high. We looked in Rutherford and the taxes were comparable to Ridgewood for the house / property you got. When we were looking in Hoboken we saw $10k for a 2/2 1000 sqft, and that was before you add building maintenance on top of it.

Yet you hear nothing at all of a storm that's about to hit another part of the US with 125 MPH gusts and over a foot of snow. It's just like when a 5.0 earthquake hits the east coast. It's major news out there but when a 5.0 hits California we just roll over and go back to sleep. It seems like the east coast is completely overwhelmed by something that just gets shrugged off in the rest of the states.

How so? You could take the GWB and ride down through Edgewater. Which would be doable with less cars trying to get through the tunnel.

A bit ingenuous to quote only the conditions predicted above 7000 feet. That's a weather report for the somewhat remote Lake Tahoe area. A mountain blizzard isn't news; major devastation in an enormous urban area most definitely is.

If no power not pump to push gas to your house, you would be better off with a diesel or gas and keep fuel on hand. Or maybe propane?
