Not a bad list....I wouldn't consider all of those "retro" though.

Gauntlet - hell yes. I dropped a ton quarters into that game in the 80s. I think it was the first (or one of the first) > two-player games. The best part was trying to make it through the "Death" level. "The Wizard needs food badly!"

And Super Mario 3. I still have that on NES ROM and play it every now and then. One of the best 8-bit NES games evar.

List is missing (to name a few) -

Marble Madness
Smash TV
1942 (I was God on this)
Star Wars
After Burner
Spy Hunter
Ninja Gaiden (arcade)

Hate to be the "list sucks without" guy, but Megaman 2 and/or 3 should be on there. A Link to the Past gets lost in the Ocarina talk, but it is an excellent game and thats one I still own the cartridge for (or as we used to call them, Nintendo Tapes) and play it once every 18 months or so. Playing a game like that is like watching a movie over and over. Even after youve played through it several times, there is always something new you realize and come to appreciate. I do think that Super Mario Bros 3 is the best game of all time.

/of all time

I just realized that it doesn't even specify arcade games, in which case, there's no possible way to make a top 20 list because there were just too many games that were at equivalent levels of awesomeness.

I mean, come on.

How retro is retro, and how great is great? On one hand, I know people who'd call the PS2 ancient history. On the other, "Pong" dominated the video game world in its prime more due to lack of competition than anything else. (When the Model T is the only car on the road, the fastest car on the road is a Model T. . .)

I have my list of favorites, but I'm sure most of them will be covered downthread.

"Retro" does not mean the same thing as "Classic", which is just a way of saying "old and popular".

Still, an excellent list of classic games.

Look we can at least all agree that SMB3 was awesome.

I have to agree with walkerhound on contra as well. I still remember beating that game for the first time I was so excited and frustrated that nobody understood just how awesome I felt for beating Contra until my older brother came home from hockey practice. He understood all too well. Hell he called one of his friends to brag that his little brother just beat Contra. To a young kid having your older brother proud of you is pretty awesome.

I think the thing I miss about those early gaming days, was how different the games were from each other. Pac-Man was nothing like Donkey Kong. Asteroids was nothing like Tempest. Each game was a unique experience.

Nowadays you have "shooting simulator" and "car simulator" and "sports team simulator" and that's about it.

lordargent: No love for bubble bub and bobble bob :(

YES YES YES.
Came here to say this. My friend Matt and I spent LOTS of money on Bubble Bobble. We knew where every 7-11 was that had one in it.
I always tell this story when discussing Bubble Bobble.
The ports of the game to the consoles and even the ROM that is floating around isn't the same as the original stand up game. There were secret boards that do not exist in any of the ported versions that I have played. To get to them neither player could die until you got a key that was on like board 80 (but it wasn't an even number board like that) - after someone got the key, one of you could die, but the other one couldn't. If you did get this key and not die, a door just like the diamond boards (that you get for not dying on the board's 20 40 and 60) would appear on board 99 in the "box" that is in the middle of the board. This door would take you past 100 to boards 01 through F which if you got through then you would get board 100 and the true happy ending for beating the giant drunk.

/We did it at the 7-11 at the mouth of Big Cottonwood canyon

Wiki says (I know...) that retro "generally implies a vintage of at least 15 or 20 years. For example clothing from the 1980s or 1990s could be retro."

So, looks like anything before 1998...

1942 was lame. Time Pilot was badass and I was king of that game. I set records at the beach that still stood years later. I used to walk away from games with high score on the machines and 7 lives left.

M.U.L.E. (awesome multiplayer)
Lode Runner (could create your own levels)
Seven Cities of Gold (one earth based world or random maps and open world to boot)
Ultima 1-5 (1-3 very retro dungeon crawling, 4 was awesome and 5 let you load from 4)
Pools of Radiance (sweet rpg beginnings)
Zorks (less was more)
Carmen San Diego (when learning games ere fun)
Tecmobowl (way better than the soccer listed)

Within those three categories there are hugely divergent games.

Shooters:
Portal2, Halo 4, Battlefield 3, Dishonored (hell those are all from this year alone!)

Driving:
Burnout paradise, Forza horizon, NFS most wanted, Mario Kart

Sports:
I have no examples because I don't generally play sports electronically I prefer the real thing

Outside of those categories.....

Minecraft
Dwarf Fortress
Civilization
Faster Than Light
Anno (any of them)
Katamari Damacy
Assassins Creed
God of War

I could go on but I think my point is made. Anyone who claims there isn't any variety is just having a nostalgia fit.

I think that procedurally created maps of near infinite size, a (rudimentary) physics engine, realistic lighting and open world gameplay would put minecraft more in the modern category than retro. Just because the graphics are blocky doesn't make the game retro.

Does anyone remember "Rip Off"?

It was a black and white screen (like Asteroids) and there were containers in a circle in the middle and you had a little ship or tank or something on the outside.

Other ships tried to come in and steal the containers in the middle and you had to shoot them.

You could play Co-Op with a friend and I spent more money on that than on the newer games with good graphics!

I completely disagree. The feel of the game (look & sound) are exactly what make a game retro.

I can show you games that contain all of the elements you listed that predate Minecraft by over a decade.

Really, the thought that convinced me of its retroness was whenever I've shown it to someone, they comment on how old it looks.

Nowadays you have "shooting simulator" and "car simulator" and "sports team simulator" and that's about it.

Back then it was "pac-man clone" "space shooter" "breakout clone" "catch the falling object into a box clone" "race game" "sports game". In the middle era it was "platform game (mario knockoff)" or "beat 'em up" (double dragon clone)

Thus always gaming has had popular genres that dominate all else, although I'll grant in the beginning there were some pretty weird and creative games. But there always continue to be weird and creative games.

Uncle Tractor: Gordon Bennett: No, that is a "retro-style" game. A game in the style of actual retro games.

So when we call them "retro games" instead of "old games," that's just us old farts trying to sound cool instead of ... old?

That's it.

jonny_q: Gordon Bennett: No, that is a "retro-style" game. A game in the style of actual retro games.

That's kinda what I was hoping the list was. Rather than argue over which of 100 80s games were omitted, I'd rather see a list of *good* games that fit the style recently that I haven't played yet. Super Meat Boy is fun. Most of today's "retro" games are really crappy, though.

That's a pretty good idea, IMO. There are too many games that come out with blocky graphics and nothing much else. I would like to see those that put more into it highlighted.

I also would like to see those that base their visual style around the limitations of actual 80s hardware. Games that genuinely look like they are running on a C64, ZX Spectrum or Amstrad CPC are, to me, more interesting than low resolution alone.

Zombalupagus: bloobeary: Asteroids

Yeah, really. How in the holy hell can Asteroids not even get on the list?

Also, a few awesome classics not yet mentioned:

Joust
Stargate
Gyruss

Gyryss! Heh. Man I sucked at Gyruss. I would put a quarter in just to listen to the music!

I was never any good at Joust either but I was the shiat at Stargate. For some reason I was way better at Stargate than Defender and Stargate seemed more difficult.

It was remade on Gameboy Color. That's the version I still have. They switched around the last two chapters, though, saying it made more sense story-wise. i wouldn't know since I never made it that far when I used to play it on NES (borrowed a friend's copy, so I didn't have unlimited access and she moved or I moved, I don't remember which, before I ever got the chance to finish it). Aside from that, though, it's a good update with better graphics. If you have access to a GBC or Gamecube with Gameboy Player (what I use), it's worth checking out.

PirateKing: "Retro" does not mean the same thing as "Classic", which is just a way of saying "old and popular".

Still, an excellent list of classic games.

I came here to say this.

"Retro" means it's a modern thing that is designed to look/act like something from an earlier time. None of those games are "retro" -- They're classics, or "old games" if you please.

A t-shirt made in 2010 with an intentionally-faded copy of the original Centipede logo is retro.
A t-shirt made in 1984 with the original Centipede logo is classic.

Learn the difference, list-making bloggers.

/Also, list-making is getting to be annoying. Is that the only way some of you kids can communicate these days?

Super Meat Boy
Super Crate Box
They Bleed Pixels
BIT.TRIP series

purple kool-aid and a jigger of formaldehyde: lordargent: No love for bubble bub and bobble bob :(

Omg thank god I'm not alone in the love for Bubble Bobble. I still own the game for nes, and still play the shiat out of it. When I was little I use to rent Bubble Bobble 2, and not the farked up sequel Rainbow Islands. Apparently it was only a rental game back in the day, I would do anything to find that game where I didn't have to pay an ass load to buy it.

They made a gameboy color port, but it sucked. I too loved the original Crystalis.

Other games I favored that aren't on the list:
NES
River City Ransom
Castlevania 3 (much better than 1 & 2 IMO)
Duck Tales
Double Dragon
Dragon Quest (Warrior) 1-4 (2-4 were much better than 1 IMO, but 1 is the beloved original)
TMNT Arcade
Final Fantasy 1
SMB 3 (listed in TFA)

Genesis
Phantasy Star 2&3
Valis 3
Revenge of Shinobi

SNES
Dragon Quest 5
Actraiser
Chrono Trigger
FF 2-3 (4 and 6)
Castlevania Dracula X (a/k/a Rondo of Blood) (much better on "PC Engine")
Zelda Link to the Past (listed in TFA)

PC
Ultima 6 and 7 (parts 1 and 2)
X-Wing
TIE Fighter
X-Wing v. TIE
X-Wing Alliance
Monkey Island series
Loom
Quest for Glory series

Agreed.

Master System got so much hate but I'm convinced it was the true gamers console. As for Phantasy Star.

Shiat. Blew my mind. And $75 in 1988 games!

I called every electronic store I could. Every copy was sold out. I called the GoodGuys(?) and the dude said

"Yes we have the Phantasy game".

Me and my Mom took a 50 minute bus ride down to the good guys at Stones Town in San Francisco.

We were both hoping we could make it before the store closed. After all, I've telling mom all about this game for weeks.

I ran up to the luckiest guy in the world (he was in charge of the video game area) and told him I called about the Phantasy game.

"Oh you, heh, I remember you. Well I saved this copy just for you!"

He then proceeds to hand me a copy of Fantasy Zone....

...

I can't finish the story.
