This is a classic list (not a bad one either), not what I expected from a retro list.

I expected to see some things like:

Sword & Sworcery
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game
Retro City Rampage

Rwa2play: Fail for "Streets of Rage 2". Streets of Rage was better.

The music wasn't.

Ah yes, many many fond memories of that game.

The Angry Hand of God: No River City Ransom. List is utter fail.

This is what I was looking for.

bloobeary: Nowadays you have "shooting simulator" and "car simulator" and "sports team simulator" and that's about it.

You are wrong.

Within those three categories there are hugely divergent games.

Shooters:
Portal2, Halo 4, Battlefield 3, Dishonored (hell those are all from this year alone!)

Driving:
Burnout paradise, Forza horizon, NFS most wanted, Mario Kart

Sports:
I have no examples because I don't generally play sports electronically I prefer the real thing

Outside of those categories.....

Minecraft
Dwarf Fortress
Civilization
Faster Than Light
Anno (any of them)
Katamari Damacy
Assassins Creed
God of War

I could go on but I think my point is made. Anyone who claims there isn't any variety is just having a nostalgia fit.

I recognize Airborne Ranger and Project Stealth Fighter. I'll add to that Pirates! and Strike Fleet.

Archon I & II
Mail Order Monsters
Jumpman (and Jr)

I think that procedurally created maps of near infinite size, a (rudimentary) physics engine, realistic lighting and open world gameplay would put minecraft more in the modern category than retro. Just because the graphics are blocky doesn't make the game retro.

Does anyone remember "Rip Off"?

It was a black and white screen (like Asteroids) and there were containers in a circle in the middle and you had a little ship or tank or something on the outside.

Other ships tried to come in and steal the containers in the middle and you had to shoot them.

You could play Co-Op with a friend and I spent more money on that than on the newer games with good graphics!

Guess I was wrong, there was no circle.

Oblig. : This is a retro game. Those are classic/ vintage.

Seriously though- no Afterburner, Road Rash, Dizzy, Creatures, Commander Keen, Cannon Fodder, Lemmings, Megaman.. actually, there are too many in general to have a top 10, at least without restricting the list to a specific genre.

2012-11-08 03:51:28 PM
The list is missing Cave Story, the greatest retro game of all time.

2012-11-08 03:51:33 PM
Castle Wolfenstein?
The Bilestoad?
Ultima I?
Lode Runner?

Where are these???

I thought the headline said "retro".

I completely disagree. The feel of the game (look & sound) are exactly what make a game retro.

I can show you games that contain all of the elements you listed that predate Minecraft by over a decade.

Really, the thought that convinced me of its retroness was whenever I've shown it to someone, they comment on how old it looks.

Is that F-19 Stealth Fighter I see at the end there?

I played the shiat out of that game on the 486DX-33. Won the game's Medal of Honor one time, when I basically leveled Poland. Good times.

That's kinda what I was hoping the list was. Rather than argue over which of 100 80s games were omitted, I'd rather see a list of *good* games that fit the style recently that I haven't played yet. Super Meat Boy is fun. Most of today's "retro" games are really crappy, though.

So when we call them "retro games" instead of "old games," that's just us old farts trying to sound cool instead of ... old?

2012-11-08 05:09:37 PM

bloobeary: Asteroids

Yeah, really. How in the holy hell can Asteroids not even get on the list?

Also, a few awesome classics not yet mentioned:

Joust
Stargate
Gyruss

2012-11-08 05:24:08 PM

bloobeary: Asteroids
Centipede
Moon Patrol
Battlezone
Zaxxon
Burgertime
Tempest
Crystal Castles
Galaga
Frogger

I think the thing I miss about those early gaming days, was how different the games were from each other. Pac-Man was nothing like Donkey Kong. Asteroids was nothing like Tempest. Each game was a unique experience.

Nowadays you have "shooting simulator" and "car simulator" and "sports team simulator" and that's about it.

Back then it was "pac-man clone" "space shooter" "breakout clone" "catch the falling object into a box clone" "race game" "sports game". In the middle era it was "platform game (mario knockoff)" or "beat 'em up" (double dragon clone)

Thus always gaming has had popular genres that dominate all else, although I'll grant in the beginning there were some pretty weird and creative games. But there always continue to be weird and creative games.

That's a pretty good idea, IMO. There are too many games that come out with blocky graphics and nothing much else. I would like to see those that put more into it highlighted.

I also would like to see those that base their visual style around the limitations of actual 80s hardware. Games that genuinely look like they are running on a C64, ZX Spectrum or Amstrad CPC are, to me, more interesting than low resolution alone.

Gyryss! Heh. Man I sucked at Gyruss. I would put a quarter in just to listen to the music!

I was never any good at Joust either but I was the shiat at Stargate. For some reason I was way better at Stargate than Defender and Stargate seemed more difficult.
