Biness: SpaceButler: GAT_00: The sub was discovered about 275 miles off the southern East Coast in international waters about two weeks ago and has been followed by the Navy since, defense officials said

Oh no, our surveillance systems worked!

They should've just tracked it secretly, without announcing anything or giving themselves away. Then, a few months from now, just quietly send Russia a complete and detailed map of every move their sub made.

i'm betting this is red herring as well. perhaps we tracked it all the way from russia but wanted to make them think we only detected it when it got close.

They're doing this for the same reason they have been flying bombers around -- to let the world know they are still relevant, and to consider that when making policy

Infernalist: This was just a case of the Russians trying to be sneaky and the US Navy not just pointing out that, yes, we 'can' hear you guys out there in your very loud, very obvious boats...But, also pointing it out to the world.

This was a very direct pointed reminder that our 'listening' tech is better than their 'sneaking' tech and we showed it to the world. It was a simple and polite humiliating of their sub Navy.

The captain of that sub boat is likely to spend the short remainder of his career submitting reports about the number of pigeons on the dock he's been reassigned to guarding.

No this story is missing some. They detected and contacted the sub. It came into a us harbour during the hurricane.

2012-11-08 10:59:48 AM
knowing the the US surveillance systems, I highly doubt this boat wasnt monitored from the time it left port. These are 20+ year old subs, and we were able to track them when they were new..I am sure technology has improved at least a little since then..

On the other hand, who cares these days?

Russians playing military dick-waving games. Not unusual.

When the Russians sent bombers to north America, our fighters would respond and meet up. They would then compare centerfolds of hot Russian chics and Americans through the canopies.

This sub story is just a scare tactic spoon feed to CNN to try and keep us wasting massive amounts of money on the military. If we were worried about the Russians would we let a US Frigate dock and have shore leave in Russia? The Captain and crew went out drinking and are now fired.... This country can't seem to function without a Boogieman to keep everyone scared.

Next time they come close the Navy should try to radio/communicate with them by inviting the captain of the sub to a nearby destroyer for a beer. A friendly invitation with a very clear message.

Oh noes! A ship is sailing in international waters! Sound the alarm!

They could sail the entire Russian fleet out there and there's no specific articulable reason that the U.S. would have to be worried, and there's no violation of any laws or treaties.

Not within U.S. territorial waters; not following any U.S. navy or merchant ships = just farking around.

This has never made sense to me. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I don't understand how that sort of thing is supposed to work. Russia has not in any sense created a perception that they might actually declare war on another major power, so what are bombers and subs in or near American territory supposed to accomplish? Make everyone else afraid that if they don't give Russia its way, they might go on more of these nonviolent excursions that don't really do anything?

Maybe I just don't know enough about it, but those actions only make sense to me as being internally-driven: as shows staged for the consumption of people within Russia, not the rest of the world. They know America won't start a war over one sub or a few planes making incursions in non-critical areas, so they take advantage of that to flex a few muscles for show to make themselves look tough domestically.

Unlike the US, the Russian people do not have massive oceans on either side and nice compliant nations to the north and south.

They live very closely to nations that have both means and motive to 'take' from them. China, mostly, but Germany has been the boogyman for them for many generations.

Their idea of 'safe' is to make everyone else too afraid to mess with them. This is part of how they do it.

My bet is that if it wasn't tracked out of port it was at least tracked from the time it got into the Atlantic... that SOSUS network in the G-I-UK gap isn't just to hear whales hump. We just only said we saw the thing once it got in relatively close.

But yeah, nothing really to see here. The Russian Navy is trying to build back up to being used to doing blue water operations in the Atlantic, but with far fewer assets than in the past. We're keeping tabs on it because the Atlantic is OUR friggin' ocean. We have plenty of history showing that it's a necessity to keep the sea lanes of communication to Europe open no matter what.

Do incursions like that actually make anyone afraid to mess with them?

I suppose it could have benefits with Russian border states like Georgia -- a way for Russia to imply that America won't step in to do anything if Russia were to invade them (again).
