I think the point is that we would never dream of doing the same and sending one of our subs to within 275 miles of their territory, because we're better than that.

I can't stress this enough but this is really cause to panic. I would contact the media and congress and demand they take action.

/the above is completely unrelated to my job working for a defense contractor making submarine parts.

2012-11-08 09:53:48 AM
Submarines should be non issue for Americans. The only countries with submarines that have much hope of remaining undetected by American submarines are allied with the Americans, and even then it's a slim hope.

2012-11-08 09:54:02 AM
This was just a case of the Russians trying to be sneaky and the US Navy not just pointing out that, yes, we 'can' hear you guys out there in your very loud, very obvious boats...But, also pointing it out to the world.

This was a very direct pointed reminder that our 'listening' tech is better than their 'sneaking' tech and we showed it to the world. It was a simple and polite humiliating of their sub Navy.

The captain of that sub boat is likely to spend the short remainder of his career submitting reports about the number of pigeons on the dock he's been reassigned to guarding.

Bingo. This isn't "scary". The job of an attack sub is to not get detected. That it did means it didn't do its job very well. A missile sub getting near the country, that could be worrying as there isn't a good reason for that, other than as provocation or a real attack. However an attack sub is only useful if it can silently track ships and thus be ready to attack. This one obviously couldn't.

SacriliciousBeerSwiller: Scary how? During the Cold War this would be known as "Tuesday".

We like sensationalism. Just like how the media loses their shiat every time a Russian bomber says hi to a carrier battle group, a Russian sub in international waters makes for a good story for people who have no sense of perspective and like to get excited about things.

I wouldn't be too worried about this. We do this to other nations and other nations do it to us. It's just been a long time since someone's had the ability as well as the will to do this. We are actively patrolling with our SURTASS ships outside of China's FBM sub ports complete with guided missile destroyer escort. It's all just military d1ck waving.   Link

The Russian system couldn't possibly be more different than our own. We can, and have, sent our men out knowing that they would fail. We plan for it.

The Russians, on the other hand, do not think like this. He was not only beaten, but publicly humiliated and humiliated the Russian people, government and Putin in the process.

If this was the Soviet days, he'd be arrested, his family arrested, with him getting shot and his family sent to a lumber camp in Siberia.

As it is, he'll be 'reassigned' to a career-ending position counting trees out in the wilderness and some other Russian captain will take his slot.

Russian leaders do not look upon failure kindly.

I disagree--it's not his fault that his equipment wasn't up to the job. I think his superiors sent him out to find out of it could be done and they just got their answer.

What's hilarious is that you probably think you know something.

Infernalist: This was just a case of the Russians trying to be sneaky and the US Navy not just pointing out that, yes, we 'can' hear you guys out there in your very loud, very obvious boats...But, also pointing it out to the world.

No this story is missing some. They detected and contacted the sub. It came into a us harbour during the hurricane.

knowing the the US surveillance systems, I highly doubt this boat wasnt monitored from the time it left port. These are 20+ year old subs, and we were able to track them when they were new..I am sure technology has improved at least a little since then..

This has never made sense to me. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I don't understand how that sort of thing is supposed to work. Russia has not in any sense created a perception that they might actually declare war on another major power, so what are bombers and subs in or near American territory supposed to accomplish? Make everyone else afraid that if they don't give Russia its way, they might go on more of these nonviolent excursions that don't really do anything?

Maybe I just don't know enough about it, but those actions only make sense to me as being internally-driven: as shows staged for the consumption of people within Russia, not the rest of the world. They know America won't start a war over one sub or a few planes making incursions in non-critical areas, so they take advantage of that to flex a few muscles for show to make themselves look tough domestically.

My bet is that if it wasn't tracked out of port it was at least tracked from the time it got into the Atlantic... that SOSUS network in the G-I-UK gap isn't just to hear whales hump. We just only said we saw the thing once it got in relatively close.

But yeah, nothing really to see here. The Russian Navy is trying to build back up to being used to doing blue water operations in the Atlantic, but with far fewer assets than in the past. We're keeping tabs on it because the Atlantic is OUR friggin' ocean. We have plenty of history showing that it's a necessity to keep the sea lanes of communication to Europe open no matter what.

I'm sure I could find at least one or two on a ship full of Russian dudes who would suit my tastes.

Just close your eyes and enjoy the sweet sweet accent, tovarich.

/although it does sound better coming from a woman. YMMV

I have to say, the Russian accent isn't the sexiest of accents. But I guess it's exotic enough..

Having lived/worked in a number of Russian speaking countries I totally disagree. It is the sexiest of accents and the women are the hottest (and most dangerous, lecherous, conniving, etc.) Plus they love milk (wink, wink):

Tired internet meme is tired.

Also, the movie its based on - boring and full of ridiculous dialogue.

The move by the Russians to put the ship close to the U.S. demonstrates its desire to ramp up deep-water patrolling by its submarine fleet - something the Russian government has said it would do, officials said.

Or, y'know, that they maintain a functioning navy and like playing stupid-ass games.

/Or got lost. That's unlikely, but would be hilarious, so I'm not discounting it as a possibility.

Patton? Wasn't that supposed to be Yamamoto?

I think it was his attempt to be witty. A poor one. Whats even worse is people who keep using the same pic over and over and over. So he lost on both fronts.

Really, man. No need to be sneaky about it.

Hot Russian navy guys? Sounds fun.
