Risks and challenges

1. The game you just spent 18 paragraphs describing is Eve Online.

Well the way he described multiplayer was more like Star Citizen.

But that's raising much the same point as you.

I'll still play that every once in a while. The Star Wars total conversion was one of the best Star Wars games ever made, and it was made by fans.

Kickstarters like this annoy me to death. No video, no graphics.
Okay, so the original probably didn't have either at 22k, but you want a million bucks, put up a video saying, "I'm going to do _____". By doing that, you, yourself are committing to the project. Without it, it might as well be the Prince of Nigeria who just needs that startup money so they can transfer your Canadian lottery winnings.

tl;dr -

"Remember Elite?
Yeah, me too.

Now give me money."

I do like the idea of keeping random people from ganking the crap out of players. But I doubt that alone is enough to warrant creating an entirely new multiplayer space game. Maybe if it had a great story, really great new ships, very interesting space combat, and beautiful graphics. An undertaking that would take a ton of resources and I just don't know if you can get something new and fresh from the money you get from Kickstarter.

2012-11-08 11:59:55 AM
Huh, so this went green, who would have thought? Must have gotten a modmin who is my age or older.

Anyway, aside from the multiplayer, this is what I have been wanting for years now.

Basically, release Elite II with up to date gfx. No need for multiplayer. That will only bring griefing.

Oh, and fix the Van Maanens star system. The permit to enter it never worked :D

2012-11-08 12:00:59 PM
i enjoyed the shizz out of elite, even though the difficulty of entry curve on it was mind-bogglingly steep.

would i pay for this? not without something to go along with the pitch. otherwise this is less an inducement to invest and more some buddy of mine wants to borrow $20 he won't pay back.

Star Citizen has a lot of videos to show what they're trying to do. It's also already funded 50% above minimum, and they are private investors that will be backing the project since the $2M goal was reached.

This is the closest to a AAA game that any "indie developer" has gotten, I'm psyched.

There were (are?) a couple excellent conversions/additions to that game. I haven't played for a long time, but it was a great game.

Pretty much this. I'm a frequent KS supporter but I really hate these retro game reboots* that feed on nostalgic suckers. This one is especially terrible for the reasons you mentioned. JFC, put a little effort into the free million you're asking for.

*I really need to keep a list of these and see just have many actually produce and how long it takes them.

Well, (hopefully) unlike other reboots, this has the original developer on board. So maybe, just maybe, your/our childhood is not pissed on for once.

And I really hope for it to be the case.

/it's 20 bucks for the game if you want nothing else.

I played the shiat out of Frontier, and would likely jeopardize my marriage by doing so again. I've looked for a good trading fighting sim for years. Tradewinds and Caravaneer just didn't cut it.

I never could make it past Marquis in rank, I loved my tooled up Boa, and liked picking fights with the police..

2012-11-08 12:25:39 PM
I spent so much time on Elite, it was ridiculous. I tried EVE and it just didn't have that same feel that I loved so much in Elite.

2012-11-08 12:31:59 PM
This technology is already working, using a combination of peer-to-peer (to reduce lag) and server connections.

"Reduce" lag by using peer-to-peer? Go sell crazy somewhere else.

I'm afraid $2M won't go very far in producing a polished commercial game these days. I'm guessing the artwork or modeling budgets for a modern game typically exceed $2M by themselves.

I loved Elite on the C64 back in the day but I'm skeptical about this, even if this guy was one of the original designers.

it is painful to see stuff like this turn to kickstarter, because you know it has been pitched to every publisher and turned down, or approved pending executive overview with notes.

On the other hand Im hoping that one of the many many many kickstarters out there (im looking at you wasteland) is successful enough they can rub some choice publisher noses in it.

I threw down on some wasteland 2. But that had Brian Fargo behind it. This has Some Guy. I'm gonna make like I'm gonna get scanned by the local system authority and my hold is full of slave pods and eject that shiat out into the void.

LSA: Hey you. What are you doing?
Me: Oh, nothing. Nothing. You know. Just crusin'. Maybe gonna do some trading.
LSA: We scanned your hold...you have nothing to trade.
Me: Yeah, it's my first time ever. I thought this remote-ass lawless planet would be a good start.
LSA: And what is up with that cloud of stasis-pods filled with slaves floating away into the infinite beyond, near where you just came from?
Me: Oh that? Yeah...confused the hell out of me too. Who dumps slave pods into space. I could have ran into those things.
LSA: ....okay, carry on.

Awww. Good ol SR2. That game was part space sim, part RTS, part FPS, part text adventure, part pinball, and I think there was like a pac-man type of gameplay in there too. It was like it did't know what kind of game it wanted to be, and so the devs said "Lets make it EVERY game". Yet somehow it worked. High as hell difficulty starting curve though. I enjoyed it, but was glad when I finialy finished it.

I hated the combat in Elite and Elite II - could never get the hang of it for some reason. The rest of the game I loved.

Would love to find a good inter-stellar trading type game where you start with a single ship (piloted by you) and build up a huge company and trading empire. The combat is not as a big a thing for me, there are plenty of other places I can get all the combat I want.

TRADE WARS!

currently backing Star Citizen and Wasteland 2.

this KS request seems like a wall of text that might as well fit on to a long strip of cardboard to be held at a freeway exit ramp.

Kick Starter money is the easiest money in the world.

Step One: Buy a 90's IP for pennies on the dollar ( and give one of the original devs $100 bucks to attach his name to it)
Step Two: Make a new logo
Step Three: Write up a few paragraphs about the game you will 'deliver'
Step Four: Money rolls in, delivery of said product never happens

Profit.

I don't want to pound Curt Shilling.

To the subject: I see lots of words and few pictures, so its not really painting a good image in my head.
I remember empire but fear its not a game that translates well into modern media. There needs to be a bit of to-do on their part to convince me otherwise.

/Star Citizen started with alot of art at least.
/You want venture cap, you need to sell more than name.

It might be that I grew up with a Mac in the house, but I'll always cite that game (and it's sequels) as the best space game I've ever played. I still vividly remember several of the fan made total conversions. Yes, that Star Wars one (which was excellent) but also a ton of the others. One, I think it was called "Frozen Core" or something, had a plot worthy of a seriously good sci-fi epic.

Great...after 25 years, I can again spend hours crashing into the side of a space station...

Frontier was one of my all time favorite games. I have looked so hard for another more modern game of its caliber. I want to buy a load of human slaves, put them in my unpressurized cargo hold and then arrive at my destination with a cargo of "meat".

2012-11-09 12:05:14 AM
I was interested at first, but now it sounds like a huge number of planets, solar systems, and space stations are going to be named after donors. Yeah - THAT is going to help with immersion - landing on Snooki's Space Station for repairs...

Docking was really easy, you just needed analog joysticks. One for speed the other for pitch and yaw. I mean ffs how cheap was a docking computer anyway, 100 credits?

da daa da de dum, plink plink, blink blink...

EVE is ok but you can`t make it a pure trading game very easily and then you have low sec where it`s just huge guilds ruling everything.

GUILDS RUIN GAMES

When will they figure this out?

Vendetta Online finally gets a face-lift??? :D

/oh, and the pew-pew action sucks in Eve.

Not that anyone will still see this, but he now updated it with concept art ect.

I wouldn't even care if I lost 20 bucks on this. It's a third of an AAA title and boy, have some of those been crap and furthermore, I spent hundreds of hours playing Frontier.
