How about.... Don't vote for dead wood. I'm sure knot many would have gotten the drift of it.

Wood died on October 15 from natural causes at age 96, during his campaign for a 12th term as Orange County Tax Collector in Orlando, Florida.

Criticized for rarely coming into the office while collecting a $150,000 salary and $90,000 pension, Wood initially announced he would step down, only to change his mind when a longtime political foe made plans to seek the seat.

This case demonstrates why Fark has a [Florida] tag.
a) Tax Collector - an office that most voters should despise, especially when he was getting $240K for doing mostly nothing.
b) He died 3 weeks before election day... and the voters didn't realize that?

So, the state of Florida is so mired in bureaucracy they are unable to remove dead candidates from the ballot, and the voters are so out of touch they'll vote for a dead guy? Can we demote FL from a state to a territory with only limited privileges?

It's not that the voters don't know. They actively continue the campaign on the grounds that this person died a few days ago, and to honor his memory wouldn't you vote for him? It was his lifelong dream, and we don't want his legacy to be losing the election.

Try running against that.

Why not run an ad:

"See this guy? This guy is no more! He has ceased to be! He's expired and gone to meet his maker! This is a late tax collector! He's a stiff! Bereft of life, he rests in peace! His metabolical processes are of interest only to historians! He's hopped the twig! He's shuffled off this mortal coil! He's run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible! This is an ex tax collector!"

- I'm Walter Sansing. I'm not dead...yet!

Most states have already sent out absentee mail in ballots 3 weeks before the election. My state had to send out absentee mail in ballots that were applied for before September 17 by September 20.

At that point in the race it's too late to replace him with another candidate, so people who really don't want to see the other guy win vote for the dead guy. Then, because the winner is dead, there's a special election later in which two living candidates can compete.

man... that's rough. Sort of like Jason Bay being paid $16,000,000 to not work, if you lose to a dead guy, it's pretty much guaranteed that you suck

I think the most important question here should be why the fark a 96 year old is running for office.

/ No offense or disrespect meant.

So I had to wiki to double-check, subby, but I believe the correct term is "Alabamian". Not that it really matters though. No one is going to confuse Alabamans with whatever they call people from Wyoming.

There is an important lesson here. When you shoot a man in the face and he apologizes to you, that's power. Don't feel sorry for the wounded old man. He knew the bargain he was making.

He blamed people voting straight Republican tickets for his loss.

Or it could be that you're such an incompetent loser that people would rather have the office occupied by a corpse and business conducted via necromancy.

OK, I'm laughing way more at this than I should be.

Third alternative: The job of tax collector is one that SHOULD be performed by a corpse.

Just don't ask Will Bailey to run the campaign.

Tax collector is an important job, especially since you have to deal with tons of paperwork, and things like vehicle registration.

I used to laugh at these sorts of results, but not after this election. If you were a Republican, you didn't get my vote. If you were a Democrat or liberal independent, you got my vote. Hell if I know whether any of them are alive or dead. I can't even remember their names at the moment.

FTFA: His name remained on the ballot and he took 56 percent of the votes to 44 percent for a Republican who promised to eliminate the office altogether if elected.

Came to say this.
A) How is a municipality going to ensure the collection of tax revenues without a tax collector? (I'm sure there's a way, but the system is designed to work the way it's currently implemented.)
B) Assuming this guy, having won, would have had the authority to eliminate the office, what's to suggest that he'd have the authority to enact alternative means of ensuring collection of tax revenues which are vital to government operation?
C) Can one reasonably expect to win on a platform of "Vote for me and I'll fire myself"?

Maybe at the lower levels, but when you're going for something like head tax collector, you need some high quality undead.

Beasley's name also remained on the ballot and he won about 52 percent of the vote. His Democratic opponent, incumbent Commissioner Walter Sansing, took the loss especially hard.

"It is a touchy situation. When you are running against a dead man, you are limited as to what you can say," Sansing told Reuters.

I would just run five second adds that said:
"Walter Samsing for Commissioner; he's still alive."

He should have known not to run as a democrat in that district.
