peterthx: theurge14: The rest of us don't turn into racist dicks when we get drunk, no counter-rallies needed to prove we aren't hateful protohumans.

Hateful isn't strong enough to describe what you guys are like when you're sober...

Right, I'm a loony lefty because I'm not racist. Got it.

Maktaka: zamboni: Creative Name: It was a small group of drunken idiots, and we had a farking counter-rally the very next night with a lot more people.

But hey, don't let that get in the way.

Well what can you do? A couple hundred drunk students acting like racist dicks makes a lot better story than the over 16000 who attend Ole Miss who weren't.

People love to cherry pick stories that tend to confirm their preconceptions. It's called bias confirmation. It's all part of being human. A flawed, ignorant human.

Why was it only Mississippi that had the racists rallying? Why was it JUST there and not also at Princeton or Harvard or CSU or Ohio Wesleyan or .......

Yeah... like you'd ever hear about it anyway. If Romney had won it would've been written off as a minor incident. It would get about the same coverage as the larger counter protest at Ole Miss that took place the next day.

People want to hear bad stories about bad people, and young people who attend a college in Mississippi, as well as the people in the South in general, are bad people. They all deserve to be punished for the sins of their fathers and grandfathers.

The story is a liberal conspiracy to make southerners look bad? Is that your final answer?

Um... no. I don't believe that I mentioned a "liberal conspiracy." Maybe I'll go back and re read my post.

Nope... still not there.

The story happened. However, anyone with a blog and an agenda can make it bigger than it really was. Anyone can post stories to news aggregators, such as Fark. Bad stories are more interesting than good stories. They draw more greenlights. more comments, more page clicks. Since they are more visible, people who have certain preconceptions tend to read, trust, believe and remember such stories.

And they will never, ever notice or give any weight to any followup that might tend to go against their preconceptions.

Also notice I didn't mention liberal or conservative. It happens both ways. We could be talking racial incidents, gun violence, unions, world affairs, puppies... whatever. I guess that was the point.

/personally anti-puppy. little bastards. little cute bastards.
