Minnesota is a weird farking state. Urban St. Paul/Minneapolis is dark, dark blue. Rural Minnesota is light blue. Sandwhiched between them is suburbia St. Paul, so deep red they keep re-electing a Congresswoman too DERP for even Iowa GOP Primary voters to stomach.

Most likely they gerrymandered the state so that they concentrated all the stupid in one place, so that they minimize the number of stupid reps that come from the state.

Bacontastesgood: Mentat: The only thing that saved the GOP last night was redistricting.

I don't disagree, but it cut both ways. In IL they lost 3 seats pretty much due to gerrymandering.

As for the rape Senators, I think from now on GOP candidates will be fitted with a shock collar around their nuts as a condition of getting party support, and if they utter the word "rape" it will go off for like 30 seconds of excruciating pain.

Truthfully, as someone who lives in NE, this was why Deb Fischer got the Senate seat here. Actually, it was two things. Firstly, Bob Kerrey did not remind the state nearly enough that Deb's a card carrying member of the Tea Party. And secondly, Deb Fischer was absolutely SILENT... she didn't say a goddamn thing the entire election cycle. I'm pretty sure she just bombarded the airwaves with GOP money and hid in her ranch until the election was over. It worked, but I'm pretty sure she's a one trick pony... once people see what she DOES in the Senate, she'll get booted out fast.

More like 30 points because he's replacing Judy Biggert who is basically an amoeba drawn to nutrients and big business.

Foster was in congress already 2009-2010, he had to move districts because no way he was going to convince the corn growers that evilution is good.

Yeah, sorry to hear she's awful, but honestly I wasn't looking forward to Bob Kerrey coming back to the Senate. That guy is a lieberman-like douchebag attention whore. TofuTheAlmighty: Mentat: The only thing that saved the GOP last night was redistrictinggerrymandering.

And they've got that locked down for another 4 cycles. It'll take a rout like 2006 to see another Dem majority in the House. Which is completely backwards because the Senate is structurally favored for Republicans.

Fixed.

The DNC will make incremental gains over the next 8 years, baring a total GOP meltdown, but when redistricting occurs after the 2020 census...well, that's pretty much the end of the GOP as a national party unless they can reinvent themselves as something other than the party of hate.

Completely off topic, but I was recently on a very, very long airline flight, and I was passing out about 6 hours in. I woke up to see them playing the new "Three Stooges" movie. Would have blinked twice and fallen asleep again but... The I saw Sophia Vergara. Pretty, pretty lady. Worth watching her move even if it's for an insipid character!

2012-11-07 12:26:39 PM

GentDirkly: Redistricting greatly helped Democrats in Florida. Still too many seats with 75% democrats due to racial issues, but more competition in the other seats than before. Democrats gained one seat from reapportionment (Grayson) and flipped two seats in south Florida for a net gain of 3.

Other states should implement Florida's redistricting amendments, without the references to race.

Or like California's. Two years ago we voted to take gerrymandering out of the hands of the Assembly in favor of an independent panel that assigns districts for everything from US Rep on down. By law they must produce same-population compact districts that to the maximum extent practical respect county, city and town lines. No more gerrymandering to protect parties or seats.

We also have open primaries where the top two advance to the general election, even if that means two persons of the same party. No more gaining office with a plurality.

2012-11-07 12:28:58 PM

Mentat: The only thing that saved the GOP last night was redistricting.

Yup. I think we should be pushing for referendums to get independent panels to do redistricting.

And vote by mail.

Well, I feel like this is the appropriate time for me to out myself as someone who wants to be a Republican again, but only if they use this beating as a lesson. I posted this at Free Republic... and got banned. I really don't know how representative FR is of the GOP as a whole, because I don't really frequent their boards.

Anyway, I posted this:

"SMH. Why so apoplectic? Do you really think that the Dems and Reps are THAT different from each other? Is America going to cast itself into the sea because our team didn't win?

We need less of that kind of screed and more introspection about why the GOP has become such a joke.

IMO, it's not because "we're too left wing." It's because we are so tone-deaf and cocooned inside our self-reinforcing media 2.0 outlets and refuse to accept anything that isn't from the mouth of FNC, Drudge, Glenn Beck, or the other anointed "truth sayers" that have been approved as acceptable. Come on, guys! We don't have to barricade our party inside a shell of victimization; It's George Soros' fault! It's the MSM's fault! There was voter fraud! The Black Panthers caused us to lose! It's always everyone's fault but our own, right?

We like to point at the welfare queens and other professionalized victims that are mooching off the system and excoriate them, but we do the same with our cloistered cliques of cry-baby conservatism. Everyone's against us! We weren't conservative enough! More rigid doctrine! More Allen Wests and Michelle Bachmanns! Sarah Palin is the answer!

Really? This smacks of self-denial and a refusal to self-evaluate our own platform. One of my greatest personal challenges has been to be able to be constructively critical towards myself. It really held me back early in my career. Only after I was able to see my own faults and stop blaming everyone else (it was my superior officers out to get me, my peers were backstabbers, it wasn't MY fault, etc) did I find success, self-improvement, and growth.

The GOP's doctrinaire rigidity cannot be confused with principled stands. Willful tunnel-vision and revered obliviousness are not to be commended. We have to be principled, yes, but not presumptive, dismissive, and condescending. Conservative but not callous. Idealists but not idolaters of ideology.

Humility and reflection in the face of rebuke are not character flaws. Stubborn stamping of feet and tantrums are.

We can be better."

Maybe I really should just abandon ship and register as an independent.

/Voted Gary Johnson, Tim Kaine, Adam Cook in Virginia 1st District

Mentat: The only thing that saved the GOP last night was redistricting.

and thinking about that a bit I came to a somewhat distubing conclusion: We, the people have quietly lost the ability to elect one of our two Houses of Congress, and it the opposite one that the founders intended. While we gained the power to directly elect our Senators via the 17th Amendment, we've effectively lost the ability to elect our Representatitves anymore thanks to gerrymandered election districts. People we'd love to see tossed on their ear (like, locally, Eric Cantor) are never in any real danger of being defeated thanks to the way the legislature has drawn his district.

I can think of ways to fix this (have the states distrcits drawn by a randomly chosen "jury" of 100 citizens who are given no demographic infomation about the state and a choice of maps drawn by computer using a "least line" algorithim) but I haven't a clue as to HOW you could get this introduced, much less passed in any state legislature R or D

Who else is waiting for the report that West, not getting the results he wanted from the recount, tied up the Secretary of State and began "interrogating" (firing a handgun next to their head, just to let 'em know he's serious)?

The kind of man that would not believe he could be defeated in the polls (and after a single term, no less).
The kind of man who would pull shiat like that in a war zone - in violation of human decency and the Geneva Conventions (or just the UCMJ?) - because he "knew" the gentleman was lying.
The kind of man who would claim in all seriousness that there are 80 "card-carrying Communists" in Congress, and not realize that that gasping was not in shock over the allegation's power, but over it's hilarity.
The kind of man who could KILL Edie Finneran!

Vicky Hartzler in MO won because they jerrymandered the hell out of the state this time. They've split all of the college town liberals in Springfield and Columbia so that the only reliably D areas are in St. Louis and K.C. Also, because Missouri lost a representative after the last census, the legislature used that as an opportunity to hack off the urban democratic area of MO-3 and combined it with the other St. Louis congressional district, which cost Russ Carnahan his job. Of course, they couldn't mess with MO-2, which is the suburban Republican area that Todd Akin comes out of, and it's still reliably retarded.

The biggest screwjob was the way they messed with MO-5, which stayed Dem despite being drawn so that exurban KC was split with MO-4 and as much of outstate as possible was pulled into MO-5. But the intention was for all the wingnuts to counterbalance the urban KC vote and knock Missouri down to just one Democrat, instead of the three they had after 2010 and the four they've historically had.
