kab: I'll wager that she and her hubby think she could do as well, if not better, as a solo act.

/folk-country equivalent of 'Hollaback Girl' in 5...4....3....

What made them unique were their vocal harmonies and their songwriting sensibilities . As a solo artist she'll be just another dime a dozen pretty face with a decent voice, like so many other Applebees waitresses in Nashville.

Tsar_Bomba1: Slu: Bummer. Looks like they enjoyed themselves on stage together. I am guessing the new mom wants to stay home with her kids.

Doubt it. I suspect there's more to it than that. If it was mutual they would have put out a press release saying...

"With the new baby we're going to take a break for a couple of months... but don't worry. We'll be back better than ever!!!"

I'm in the biz here in Nashville. I'll ask around and see if I can find out what the real deal is.

John just told me "all is fine," with no details. I spoke with his sister yesterday and she just said that they have reached a point where they can't work together...but again, no details. So who knows.

Considering how large a genre folk is, this is the stupidest thing I've read all day.

I'd like to be related to her. And by "related to," I mean "inside."

/like in the tiny spaceship in "Fantastic Voyage." I bet she has an outstanding lymphatic system.

She's quite attractive. Even up close. I've only met her in the briefest sense, but I was not displeased.

It happens. D.C. Talk was pretty much sick of each other when they "retired". Can't believe 48 year old Toby Mack is still kickin' it. First song I heard was Barton Hollow - went out and actually bought the cd instead of grabbing one of the promo ones at work.

What I could find out would probably be more rumor than anything. Although I do know what happened to the blonde in Gloriana.

He's my cousin, so I do have a direct line to him...but it's not like he owes me any explanation. I figure I'll hear the details when it's time to hear them. Until then, it's just kind of a bummer. They were poised for a lot of success.

I heard them do Portishead's 'Sour Times' last month at Austin City Limits.
Thought it an odd choice, but now not so much.

one_drummer: What happened to the blonde in Gloriana??

Who knows. There are so many possible problems and scenarios.

It could be something as simple as a singer falling for the guitar tech on tour... guitar tech starts slacking off... other members get mad and fire guitar tech... one of the singers gets mad and just walks away at the end of a concert.

Of course it could be many things though... that's only one possible scenario. Only the band knows for sure. ;)

The way they look at each other when they perform, I just figured their spouses/significant others were waiting for them to sleep together

She's married to their manager, of course things were going to go south. He's probably constantly in her ear telling her she'd be better off as a solo artist.

Trocadero: They did a set on Prairie Home Companion that was absolutely amazing. They're studio work isn't nearly as good, though.

Their studio work is REALLY not good compared to their live stuff. After listening to some studio cuts I couldn't see why people were hyping them, but after listening to them live I could only wonder who was smoking what to make them end up with the studio album they did because it is CRAP compared to what they can do.

For what it's worth, they've rectified this somewhat by putting out a free live album. You can listen to it, or download it here or download it directly off their website though you can't listen to it there.

I saw them two nights ago at the Roundhouse in London. They were amazing and you would have abosolutely no idea that there were any issues. Very professional.

On a side note, the Lumineers opened for them, and they were amazing! Had never heard of them before.

They added that they hoped to have new music in 2013.

Williams and White are both married, but to other people. Williams had a baby this summer with husband Nate Yetton, the duo's manager.

That's pretty much exactly what they said. You've got to consider their history here. Both of these performers are veteran back-ups and gig-ers. Both of them spent years and years busting their asses to make it in this business, clinging like the vast majority of musicians to low-paying free-lance jobs. Keep that in mind when you consider this scenario. It seems pretty plausible to me that if Joy Williams went to John White and told him she wanted to cut back on tour dates and take a break for her baby that he, desperate to succeed in this business after so long and so close to finally hitting the big time, would have been firmly opposed to it. Given that her husband is their manager that's an argument he'd never have been able to win, but that he'd still make it isn't surprising.

Having said all that, I feel a rather important point has been over-looked in this thread; that all this speculation is merely gossip and that the only 4 people for whom this matters and who have even the slightest idea about what's really going on are the two performers and their so's. Also, nice for throwing in all the lady-hating farkers; always good to see the misogynists on this board won't let me down when it comes to dragging the name and talent of a woman down, even when she's been working her ass off in an industry for years.

I hear what you're saying. Just think it's a really weird/cryptic press release. Like I said before... even when bands are fighting the label usually says

"Well we really need a break due to all the performances and the family - but next year we'll be back better than ever!"

That's how you do a press release. You usually don't say "We're having problems so we're suspending our gigs for awhile". Either that or they're the most honest musicians in the industry! I wish them both the best. Like I said I went out and bought their cd when I could have easily picked up one of the promo copies at work.

I've got a buddy who runs a record label and he's always said "If you find someone you like support them by buying their cd."... and that's exactly what I do.
