I personally would prefer to have a gamer elected than some "rape rape" bs factory anyway.

Victory or Death!

Aw wow, today has been great on so many levels but seeing Colleen Lachowicz win out in her Maine Senate campaign especially after having her opponent attempt to besmirch her just because she happened to play a little WOW is really the icing on the cake!

Welcome to the Senate, CL. I think you'll find it's a lot like Barrens chat in many ways.

The President:
Would the clerk of the Senate please continue to record roll call.

Senator Baker?

Sen Baker: Present.

The President:
Senator Tompkins?

Sen Tompkins: Present

The President:
Senator Lachowicz?

Sen Lachowicz: Ready to work!

The President: Fine.

The present motion on the agenda is amendment IV, subsection four A of the proposed $3 million spending to improve highway sections four, six and seven on the DOT appropriation bill. Senators shall vote by voice.

Senator Baker?

Sen Baker: Aye.

The President:
Senator Tomkins?

Sen Tomkins: Nay

The President:
Senator Lachowicz?

Sen Lachowicz: FOR THE HORDE!

The President: Senator Lachowicz, for the last time, please indicate either "aye" "nay" or "present"

Sen Lachowicz: (grumbling) Grombolar

The President: What was that?

Sen Lachowicz: Nothing, my Warchief.

The President: And stop calling me... that. You're a Senator duly elected to serve the state of Maine, not some yahoo Newfie.

Sen Lachowicz: Swo'bu.

The President: So, how do you vote?

Sen Lachowicz: Zug zug.

The President: Alright, you leave me no choice. Sergeant of Arms, please escort Senator Lachowicz from the chamber until she starts speaking English again?

Sen Lachowicz withdraws a battleaxe from her cloak and quickly dispatches the Sergeant of Arms, turning her attention back to the President.

Sen Lachowicz: We need NEW Warchief now. (cleaves the President's head from his shoulders, holding it aloft with pride) Lok-Tar!

(The rest of the Senate watches in muted, horrified silence, Lachowicz ascends to the rostrum and buries the head of her axe in the wooden dias)

Sen Lachowicz: (grins and pulls a flask of bloodwine from her frostweave bag) Work complete!

Seriously though, congrats and good luck!

And as far as the intersection between gaming and politics goes, I just finished reading this tonight:

The quote that was used against her was from '09. She may not even play anymore. Still I'm glad that attacking someone for playing an online game didn't work.
Who's really going to swayed into not voting for someone because they do some online gaming? I mean besides the religious nut jobs and tea party types that would never vote for a Democrat anyways?

Oh, and slightly off topic, thank the tea party types that you know today. They played a large role in what happened last night.

Nice! So much farking win last night, I am cautiously optimistic about this country again. I hope we just witnessed the death of the Tea Party, and then some.

When you have a native population of barbarians who like to pillage, the best idea is to get them pointed at an enemy of your choice, instead of sitting around looking for one.

Monkeyhouse Zendo: Gwendolyn: Know when that is happening? I may reroll and try again.

SWTOR F2P is supposed to happen this month some time. You're limited on flashpoints, operations and space combat (who cares) but can play the leveling game and class stories all the way through 50.

...which is the only part of the game that actually matters, as SWTOR lacks any sort of endgame, balance, or economy. That's why the most expensive MMO to produce in history is going F2P less than a year after its release - because blowing your wad on voice talent is useless if you don't have a friggin' game to go with it. SWTOR was a major disappointment not just for folks looking to spend real time in a Star Wars MMO, but for anyone interested in playing an MMO.

I say skip it. I got about 25% into the first book and lost interest. No way I'm reading all of that.

Snow Crash, Cryptonomicon, The Diamond Age, REAMDE all great books.
Anathem was a good story but had room for improvement (and the "lemme just throw an ending together"ness was pretty apparent).
I have Zodiac on my Kindle but haven't read it yet.

t3knomanser: fusillade762: "I'm not magic. You lead yourselves."

God that book was preachy. It was an enjoyable, light read, but daaaammmmnnnnn does Doctorow really climb up on the pulpit these days. REAMDE covered similar territory, but in the context of a political thriller, and was much better (aside from the, "Hi, I'm Neal Stephenson, and I will cram my book full of ideas, but can't write an ending, so we'll just slam the plot into a brick wall and call it a day.")

Agreed for the most part. I liked the spirit of the book. I wouldn't say preachy, but he does seem to launch into passages overexplaining things a number of times.

I need to revisit Stephenson. I'm utterly intimidated by the Baroque Cycle. And I haven't read README and oddly enough a quick google gets me this:

Stephenson's REAMDE: perfectly executed, mammoth, ambitious technothriller
Cory Doctorow

Nothing against her, but doesn't it take more than a "little" playing to get to level ?

I ground a Pandaren Monk from level 1 to 90 in about 3 days. It doesn't take that long.

Trick is not sleeping, of course.

*blink*

/5 90s and 11 professions done 6 85s waiting to go.

They've done some nerfing to make leveling more straightforward; the game when I started playing was NOT newbie-friendly. I can get to Level 20 in about 3 days and Level 60 in two weeks without locking myself in my room and subsisting on pizza and Tang.

As noted before, her quote was from three years ago, so she might not still play, but if she does, it IS interesting that someone can balance leisure and professional time so well that they can run a successful political campaign while being a gamer.
