Congratulations to Baldwin! This is both a great win for progressive causes and a loss for head-on style political ads.  Hopefully it makes up for Ron Johnson over Feingold a tiny, tiny bit.

Incidentally, she's not the first gay U.S. Senator from Wisconsin -- It's never been much of a secret that Sen. Kohl (whose seat she's won) is gay. It's a thing Kohl's always chosen to keep private, but it's a fact that I think is as widely known as Tommy Thompson's mistresses back in the day.

Speaking of which, I imagine that Tommy Thompson's being a Really Old Ugly Guy & the consequent inability to pick up young/young-ish women anymore has got to be even more demoralizing to him than losing this Senate race.

I am actually a bit supprised,Thompson has off th charts name recognition. He just ran a phone it in campaign. It just goes to show if Wisconsin elected its Governors in presidential years we would be talking about Gov. Barrett.

I seriously do not see how this changes anything in Colorado, especially along the front range where enforcement of possession of pot has been treated like a secondary offense since BEFORE the medical use legalization. Might it keep some of the small town cops and Colorado Springs wingnuts from persecuting people for personal use? Maybe, but more likely they will just arrange to have them charged by the Feds instead. As for the Denver metro and Boulder areas, it's business as usual this morning. Smoke a cigarette in public and they look at you like you have two heads, smoke a joint at a light rail station right in front of someone's little kids and nobody says anything about it.

Feingold is/was a total hypocritical egomaniac, which is why he lost. People finally realized he was full of shiat when he said he didn't get influenced by lobbyists. Ronny Johnson sucks, too, but it was pretty obvious to most people why he won.

I was in Colorado about a month ago and saw a dispensary about the size of a Costco Warehouse and thought "Wow, I wonder what it's going to look like when it's legal."

I sort of remember that one of them looked exactly like his wife, but I might be wrong. About ten years ago when he was working for the Bush administration and was less geriatric and lumpy looking than he is today, I saw him zipping through O'Hare concourses on one of those VIP carts accompanied by a cute 20ish woman, an intern maybe, and thought to myself "OH GOD NO THIS IS TOO HORRIBLE TO CONTEMPLATE", but it could have been perfectly innocent.

There's at least one Farker who could probably discuss Thompson's mistresses' attractiveness at length ...

I don't have TV at my apartment, so I had not been exposed to the deluge of ads this election cycle. I went to a friend's place for some games and he had left the TV on to watch the Packer game. Every other commercial was a Tammy Baldwin Too Extreme ad. Holy crap.

That must be the worst kept secret since the long-time gay Wisconsin senator was commonly referred to as the Dairy Queen.

Let's not forget Gay Marriage appears to have won 4 out of 4 referendums (and not even relying on "blank counts as no" in Minnesota. Hopefully this signals Minnesota is quickly moving towards legalizing gay marriage.

Good on my home state for electing Tammy. Yes it does ALMOST make up for Ron Johnson. Good job on the national level.

We are so hosed on the state level though. Northern WI sent a republican to the state senate and now Scotty has a rubber stamp legislature again. The butt hurt that the Koch brothers must be fealing makes me fear what they have in store for WI again.

It wasn't just the TV, it was also the radio. Milwaukee radio sucks* so hard I've turned off the music and flip through talk stations to/from work and the lunch break. They were constantly on them also.

have to presage this with the admission that i really didn't pay much attention to this race as it happened, so...i could have just climbed into my own information bubble.


buuuuuut, am i the only one that was aware of this race, but blissfully unaware of this lady's sexual orientation? from the perspective of somebody several states away (so i wouldn't be getting any of the local advertisements) but still somewhat politically interested...the fact that ZOMGSSHE'SAGAYHOMO! wasn't shrieked from the rooftops loudly and repeatedly enough that it would puncture my little information bubble....well, that kinda feels like progress.

maybe other races just overshadowed what could be derped about, but still...the fact a gay lady won a senate seat in the midwest is one thing - the fact that it wasn't described as an Apocalypse in and of itself by enough punditry to reach critical-derp...again, that just sorta feels like progress.

I don't really care about the gay part, but I met her at a party rally at UW La Crosse before she ran for this, and I must say, she is nucking futs. Definitley not a stable individual.

-Our entire state government is about to go back to being solid red (senate (I believe this flipped back red last night, didn't really pay attention to it), assembly, and governor all are red).
-Our two state senators: Ron Johnson = Tea Party. Tammy Baldwin = lesbian (an leans fairly far left in general).
-About 15-20% (don't remember what the actual stat is) of the people that voted FOR Walker in the recall election voted FOR Obama in this election.


I do not know how much purpler you want a state to get. For the last several elections we have gone Democrat for president, but people have no issues voting for a Democrat and a Republican on the same ballot.

To hear it told, everyone up there ran with Ed and Tommy back in the day on cross-county drinking binges. And just about ever old crow from Nekoosa to the Dells has had one of the two of them grab their behind or make out with them.

I met her at Brat Fest a few years back and talked to her a bit (was during a less busy time), and she seemed pretty nice. Seemed to have a pretty big ego, but seemed okay otherwise. And yes, I voted for her.

I'll simply set it up by saying one of the two relatives is my great aunt who after her husband died began flirting with my uncle...her nephew. I got to spend my sister's reception sitting between the two of them because my uncle was bribing me with shots all night to make sure he didn't have great aunt Helen draped all over him. This is also on the sane side of my family.

As for Tommy, he's the man/myth/legend up there. Mostly because he tried to send money out that way to slow what they've become now- meeting places for drug dealers. It ended up being mostly prisons (there are two within eight miles of my parent's house) but unlike McCallum, Doyle and Walker he actually gave a damn about the boonies. He's also about the last thing resembling a Goldwater Republican in this state now that the Waukesha/Fox Valley crypto-evangelicals have taken over.

I was certainly on her email list.. and the topic of her sexual orientation didn't come up. Not that should matter that much, but I didn't know until Wednesday.
