I have noted a distinct lack of grey6'd individuals in the many and mega threads spawned today.

/Not complaining, mind you, rather refreshing in fact.

I actually find this to be one of the more important votes of last night.

I know both parties have said they'll let it pass in Congress, but the cynic in me thinks the House may find some reason to block it to prevent two new senators who will swing Democrat.

"Puerto Rico has to be a state. There is no other option," said 25-year-old Jerome Lefebre, who picked up his grandfather before driving to the polls. "We're doing OK, but we could do better. We would receive more benefits, a lot more financial help."

So that's pretty much it, eh? What can be stolen from others. That's all that matters. America is done.

You know, I was going to be all "yeah, let's let them be a state, taxation without representation, etc", then I saw that quote. I guess with Obama back in the white house...

Buy some 'old' ones now while you can, so you can say you bought it before the U.S. became 51.

Now that I think about it more, I think we should reject P.R. as the 51st state. Odd number of states, it can't be a good thing. That's a legitimate reason to reject them, right?

What kind of annoys me about that article is that I've been seeing it all day Tuesday, and now they've just kind of shoehorned the results into the middle of it. Would it kill the reporter to write an actual new news story about the results with a headline that makes it clear that this is really happening? Lazy ass journalists.

I hear that President Obama wants to make Puerto Rico a steak! ... Now, why does he have to make them a steak? I didn't think those people even liked meat. ... Now, let me warn all of you. If you make Puerto Rico a steak, the next thing they'll want is a baked potato! With sour cream and chives and little tiny bacon bits and pieces of toast! And then they'll probably want a salad bar! Why, they'll be lined up for miles!

That's not a bad idea, actually. 30 years from now our 50 star flags may become rare, and rare means money

Has a lot to do with SEO value too. If the existing article has a good page rank, you're better off updating it than writing a new one.

Iirc, 59.

The quote was something like "I've been to fifty seven states and I still have one left".

Far as Puerto Rico, I'm gonna say its farking long overdue.
Hopefully the status change will help other colonies rethink their status too.

That'll be interesting in terms of national politics. Puerto Rico has way more people than I thought it did; enough to make it the 29th most populous state.

If it was my choice I'd wrap them all together as one state with a choice number of electoral votes.
They have many of the same issues when dealing with the Feds, but small populations and currently no bargaining power.

As a group we can do a bit of damage come election time.

Are you serious? Small populations? From what I just read, P.R. has a pretty sizable population. Also, banding a bunch of Pacific and Caribbean islands into one state seems like it would be a logistics nightmare.

It's 60 for fark's sake. He said he'd been to 57 and he had 3 left. Jebus Tittyfarking Christ.

So PR is 61.

And there's no chance it actually happens. If the GOP can block it they will. They won't win seats there.

I imagine blocking something like this because it won't aid a particular party would probably not be looked upon very favorably by a majority of Americans.

FTFA: The two-part referendum first asked voters if they wanted to change Puerto Rico's 114-year relationship with the United States. A second question gave voters three alternatives if they wanted a change...
53 percent, said they did not want to continue under the current political status...
On the second question, 65 percent favored statehood

If I'm reading this correctly, only 53% want a change, and 65% want that change to be statehood...
Wouldn't that suggest that 66% want something other than statehood (if status quo is an option)?

No. It's just that when people talk about how the south is backwards uneducated etc... I just can't help but think there's a racial aspect to it, considering the south has the highest per capita population of black people in the US.

After their buddies at Faux News went out of their way to bemoan the "becoming more brown" of America, there is NO WAY the House lets this even come to the floor. They are not going to risk letting millions more "brown people" send another 3 people to the Electoral College. Personally, I long for us to all become a nice shade of beige, both because it's what is best for the country AND because of the pure unadulterated butthurt it will cause the barely closeted bigots down here in the south.

Tyranny of the minority.

This would better held as 2 separate votes. And really it should require 2/3s to go through.
