CapeFearCadaver: Smackledorfer: Yes, when you consider ALL non-white/non-male people to be one group, then white males are the farking minority. I would be insulted as fark by that if I were a woman, especially a white woman.

White woman here; was done with being insulted quite a while ago. All I can garner now is a small roll of the eyes and shake of the head.

/it helps getting to this point when your father is constantly lambasting you as well because your not, well, a son.

I don't get why anyone sticks around. Here is a pundit saying flat out that the preferences of women, white or otherwise, are in direct confrontation to his interests as a white male and his want to be the majority and the leader of the country.

WinoRhino: CapeFearCadaver: If I had cable I'd certainly have had switched to Fox a couple of times only to quickly change it back out of nothing but ... embarrassment for them.

Congrats, you're one of today's lucky 10,000. I have a great new word for you. It's German. Fremdscham: Almost the opposite of Schadenfreude, Fremdscham is the feeling of being embarrassed for someone else (presumably someone who's not embarrassed for themselves, but should be.)

The Germans have a word for everything. I bet they even have a word that means "hey, we have a word for everything!"

Oh, and CapeFearCadaver: I'm the same way. I don't watch TV and don't live in the US but if I did and did, I wouldn't be able to watch more than a few minutes of Fox News. Just to embarrassing!

Peter von Nostrand: jigsawspartan: Peter von Nostrand: jigsawspartan: When Rove made the comment they had given him numbers saying there was only a 900 vote difference between the two, with 20% left to be tallied. All he did was say that it was too close to call so soon. When they came back and gave him the up to date numbers he agreed with the. So what's the big deal?

This thread is as lefty biased as Rove is to the right.

BS. He knew they had different numbers than he did (the people making the call). He slipped that in a little later on

Not true. He repeatedly read out the numbers he had. What he said at the end was if I had the numbers at 30,000 like they did I would have been much more comfortable, but 900 is too close to call.

Yes, he later on admitted they had a different data set than he did. He also talked about how his numbers were projections based on '08. The stats guys (I assume they were statisticians) said they were dealing with raw numbers from actual voting totals. He knew he had a different data set and still threw an on-air tantrum. There's nothing partisan about recognizing a grown man being a petulant baby

I should also add that Chuck Todd later on (I know he's on MSNBC but it's safe too assume they get the same info that Fox does) explained the call by saying that Ohio had 750,000 votes left in left districts and only 140,000 left in right districts. Couple that with all the polling consistently showing Obama leading Ohio, it's not hard to see why they made the call

It was also unbelievably rich that a former Bush '00 guy was throwing a hissy fit about wanting all the votes counted

Peter von Nostrand: Grungehamster: It was pretty surreal to watch; he was having a meltdown and the pundits were urging the people who projected the win to reconsider it. This was somehow better than 2008 where Karl Rove predicted that we'd know who the next president would be once Ohio was called, with the host interrupting to announce that Obama won Ohio leaving Rove with a stunned look on his face. I'd suggest someone shoop Rove's head on the "It's still real to me, dammit!" guy's picture, but I'm afraid no one could tell the difference.

Watching them (including Rove, of all people) later on last night bemoan the Obama campaign and all the money that was spent, the negativity, how they felt Romney was unfairly characterized as a person and his past, how they felt Obama was too divisive was beyond surreal

From about 10 am to 10 pm yesterday, all the news networks were mostly interchangeable in terms of coverage. Too much data were pouring in to analyze AND spin, so they were just analyzing and reporting. It was nice. Then 11:18PM came and we're right back to business as usual.

But for 12 glorious hours, we were treated to some journalism. Not a lot, but a little bit. Enough that I noticed anyway.

Granny_Panties: The days of large corporations donating huge amounts of money to Super PACs are over. There is no way the Koch brothers and company are going to be dumb enough to do this again. It was a one time deal and it didn't pay off.

Lies and voter suppression is all they have left. That didn't work out either, but at least is less expensive.

Eh, while this election did prove that billionaires can't buy an election when a charismatic opponent is being challenged by a weaksauce, unlikable man even in a poor economy, this probably isn't the end of the torrent of nearly anonymous funds trying to influence the vote. If they (the Kochs of the world) think they have a better candidate in '16, I see no reason for them not to try again.

However, if the economy and unemployment are finally satisfactory to a majority of Americans, the GOP won't have anything to sell unless the Democratic nominee is just that awful. What would they offer? That Democrats are p*ssies when it comes to terror/military? Obama has pretty much neutralized that old plank. Dems can no longer be painted as weak in that regard (and we never were). At any rate, they will try again, if not with as much gusto.

Another possibility is that since this election wasn't an actual landslide, they might double-down. Now these billionaires are nowhere near as dumb as the average Fark troll that doubles-down when confronted with reality, but they might be dumb enough to think that if they had only try harder, Generic Repubilcan Candidate can take those swing states.

Koch Brothers are in Carl's office as we speak ripping out his second arsehat, or is it his third because the Weaver Terrace Boys got there first at around 12:30 A.M. last night.

Shelly Abelson is to be indicted at 4:30 A.M. Tel Aviv time tomorrow. (he's there to avoid extradition to the U.S. or , worse, China.)

I wish I could have seen that. Hopefully there are some youtube records of it.

Is this the clip related to the subby?

It was subby.... adjacent? Um, no, that was the other fail. Which is now my fail. There's enough to go around.

Peter von Nostrand:
I think that's optimistic. Democrats suck at mid-year elections, while Republicans are typically galvanized. Every recent significant GOP gain in the house has come in off year elections.

I think the GOP will go overboard fighting Obama on everything and will overplay their hand. They'll get whitewashed in '14 and probably screw up '16 in the process

I certainly hope you are right. Recent history doesn't bode well, though.

quatchi: fta: there were few fireworks (beyond Fox News star Bill O'Reilly's offensive outburst that "the white establishment is now the minority". . . and "it's not a traditional America anymore.")

Yeah, FOX hosts spouting off racist sentiments is hardly worth even noting at this point.

Rove looked like a man caught between a rock and a hard place last night. Like he knew Shelly Adelson had some old school goons waiting out back for him after the interview.

Kinda curious on this.

I know some powerful/rich people like to surround themselves with yes men, but at this point there has to be a lot of million and billionaires who are realizing that the GOP has been lying to them about this election being a sure thing. What sort of fallout is their going to be? Will there just be a few sacrificial lambs going down, will a few of the pocketbooks start considering if the GOP is worth their money?

ddam: Karl Rove did what Karl Rove does.

Disagree. Karl Rove is a sack of crap but everyone, on both sides, agrees that when it comes to politics he's SCARILY competent. Last night wasn't competent. He lost it and looked like a hack.

2012-11-07 01:49:45 PM
One thing I don't quite get is...

Why was Karl Rove so adamant about the fact of Fox calling the Ohio race based on prediction? 'Calling' it doesn't assign votes, it's just a projection. Did he think that if Fox 'calls' more states for Romney that means he wins?

I mean, the whole underlying principle of news media is to report things; now, falsifying reports is "fine", but it doesn't change the underlying reality.

/I said underlying twice

I was watching this live. It was unbelievable and incredibly awkward. The best part was the lady anchor awkwardly walking from her anchor desk down the white hallway to meet with the number crunchers, who looked so uncomfortable being on camera and they basically said "99.95%" that Obama won and Rove was wrong. It was just like that Benghazi pwnage Obama pulled on Romney during the second debate. So glad I was watching Fox News, of all channels. That scene brought me so much joy! FARK YOU, ROVE!

My initial thought when all this went down, in light of recent allegations of voting machine rigging in Ohio, was that Rove was waiting for the cooked numbers from the rigged voting machines to come in. And that maybe he suddenly realized he'd been double-crossed when Obama's numbers were as high as they were....

Yes, I read too many novels.

Here is my crazy conspiracy theory. The walk down the hall was a contingency plan if there needed to be an emergency Romney/Rove discussion. Rove cues everyone by saying something like, "Hey, Megyn, those numbers don't look right to me. Check with the stats guys." Megyn then goes down the hall to the stats guys holding pen. Their room is located as far as possible to give Rove a chance to communicate with the Romney camp. That way they don't have to explain a sudden Rove absence on the set.

I just want to say that however and whomever came up with using "potato" as a euphanism for "retard" made my night. Some comment in the election thread stated something along the lines of "Karl Rove is going full potato on FOX!" made me chuckle like a baby being tickled.

Dude, be calm. I merely thought it odd they'd have a group of people they felt they may need to speak with during a live broadcast 2 blocks from the set. Her comments suggest they had prepared for such an event. So again...just thought it odd they'd have them so far away as well as wondering why someone from there couldn't just come to the set. I don't care if it's Fox, MSNBC, or CNN. The entire thing just seems (and appeared) very odd and pointless. Like CNN's 'holograms' or MSNBC's Al Sharpton.

Yes, when you consider ALL non-white/non-male people to be one group, then white males are the farking minority. I would be insulted as fark by that if I were a woman, especially a white woman.

Hey 45% of women who went for Romney: you just got told you aren't the equals and partners of white males, but rather are no better than a black or an hispanic. You don't sit at their table, you sit with the rest of the country.

Now, I'm not lumping all republicans together, and obviously 45% of female voters didn't vote that way because they want to follow their husband's commands like he in turn follows god's. I don't think all the white male conservatives agree with bullshiat like that either. But I do think that your party will accept anything short of Todd Akin's comments when it comes to misogynistic bullshiat, and it might behoove the rest of you, male or female, white or black, to try to shut these farkers up and remove their influence on your party.

Yes, they'll try to bribe/intimidate/remove (to put it in kind words) every Democrat and progressive they can get their hands on, but this time, people know, and they're not happy with what they know.

But, she knew specifically when her headset/earpiece was going to connection, so it's not just walking. It *was* specifically going down that hall.

Yes, they practiced reporting while walking down a hall, in a hall that's in their studio. Those bastards!

It's more than that. Notice that when she 'rounds the corner at about 1:35 in, there's a cut to a second camera. This was far from impromptu, and was staged, blocked and specifically added to the "coverage". Don't know why since it made Rove look like the ass he is, but it was far from a "just in case" scenario.

ExperianScaresCthulhu: Smackledorfer: I just like the video on the link of that douchenozzle claiming whites males are the minority.

And Bill is one of the more sane pundits advocating for Republicans.

I see what you did there. F*k You for your sincerity.

/hoping in three pages you've seen your mistake

No, you're going to have to spell it out for me.

A pundit when into a rant about white males being a minority. White females are still the largest group combination of race/sex in the country, with white males a close second, and every other group well behind either of those. Yet this pundit is trying to pretend that white males are a minority being disenfranchised because EVERY SINGLE OTHER BREAKDOWN of races and colors leaned towards Obama and away from what I guess is the 'white/male' candidate (He's not my candidate, I guess I'm a race/sex traitor).

It is significant that he distinguishes white women from white men in his comment in order to make his kind of whites seem like a disenfranchised minority and chooses to lump them in with what the pundit clearly believes to be inferior groups (you know, blacks, browns, yellows, and I guess everything with a vagina, or gays; I'm sure there are more).

I think that detail is worth pointing out. I don't know if you misread my statements and thought I actually believe that minority groups are inferior or what. Please enlighten me.

What I took issue with:
* "when you consider ALL non-white/non-male people to be one group, then white males are the farking minority. I would be insulted as fark by that if I were a woman, especially a white woman."
- Why I took issue with it: Why should a white woman especially be insulted? I instinctly winced at the direction you were going. Auxilliary Klanswoman flashbacks. 'How Dare Black Men Get the Vote before White Women' arguments aong white feminists (past and present) who weren't Klan, flashbacks. What makes a minority, anyway? Not numbers, not really. It's power that makes one a minority versus a majority. If you have the majority of the power, you are a majority. If you have a minority of power, you are a minority.

White males, be they Anglo, German or Spanish -- or Jewish -- hold power. Non-white males, be they Black, Indian, Mestizo/Mulatto, hold considerably less power. Dirty white males (which Spanish/Latino males should probably currently be counted as) are in between, until they are absorbed into the generic white male classification.

Asian Men and Asian Women are in the position of having more material wealth than White Men and White Women, having a separate ladder than White Men and White Women, and not having to share that ladder with Black Men and Women, Latin Men and Women and Indian Men and Women. Asian Men and Asian Women are only People of Color, in America, in the literal sense, not in the power sense.

Asian Men and Asian Women are not People of Color in the political sense.

Anyway, White women hold more power than non-white women. They hold so much power, in fact, that the term 'woman' is shorthand for white woman, in the same way 'man' was shorthand for European. It is not and never has been an inclusive term. Statistics which fit for white women don't fit for women of color, and never have. If you're a person of color, black, latin or indian, you are more likely to read between the lines of 'woman' than a white is. If you are an Asian, you don't have to read between the lines because you are more likely to not give a fk one way or the other, because the White Woman is irrelevant to you.. if anything, the White Woman is fighting *you* for a place on *your* ladder. If you read a story about 'Woman' you already know it doesn't apply to you, but your knowing leads to different places than the Traditional Woman of Color's knowing. If that makes sense.

A white woman is going to see herself, in the phrase 'Woman', and that's the end of the story... because it's true. Why is that important? The woman of color has her negative experiences absorbed by the white woman, in the woman's narrative for herself; but the woman of color does not have her positive experiences absorbed -- they are unique to herself. More importantly the white woman's positive experiences are not and can not be absorbed into the woman of color's own experiences. The white woman's victories are not necessarily the woman of color's victories.... but the white woman's victories are classified as Woman's victory. The White woman's victories are supposed to be shared by all women, even when they are not, because the white woman is to Woman as the white man is to Man.

The woman of color's victories, are never classified as the generic Woman's victory.

So, as you said, "I would be insulted as fark by that if I were a woman, especially a white woman." Yes, how dare the White Woman be lumped in the Non-White Man. Should she not feel some smidgin of outrage that she does not share the top of the mountain with her White Man? That is the especially, and that is what I was offended by. The 'especially' which you added underscored that White Woman is the default.

The other part of that is.... why should the Woman of Color be insulted that she is lumped with the Man of Color, since she is going to share some experiences with the Man of Color which the White Woman will never understand, absorb or comprehend? The Woman of Color is in the position of knowing that her Man of Color is powerless.

The White Woman knows that her White Man holds power.

If anything, the Woman of Color and Man of Color should be on the same side, but can not be. The Woman and Man of Color hold no power, and must deal with the challenges that brings into the home, where a traditional relationship may be desired, but can not be fulfilled. The Woman and Man of Color have additional fights the White Man and Woman have no inkling of, and which is not acknowledged in any discussions where Man is default for White and Woman is default for White.

All that to say, Too Long, Didn't Read: This graph --

(continuing) because I spent so long on a tangent which could be summed up in a sentence or two, but didn't know to do it. Apologies:

What I took issue with:
* Hey 45% of women who went for Romney: you just got told you aren't the equals and partners of white males, but rather are no better than a black or an hispanic.
- Why I took issue with it: you used 'woman' as shorthand for 'white woman'. You insulted blacks and latinos. You upheld the status quo of whites on top of the ladder, blacks and latinos fighting at the bottom of the ladder. You ignored that the only way for Black Women and Latina Women to be equal partners of White Men is if Black Men and Latino Men were erased from the equation, and White Men took All.

This goes back to what I was saying above of traditional gender roles, and how some women may be primary breadwinners... but would prefer that their men were; and their men would prefer that they were the primary breadwinner. Black Women Don't Want White Men. Latina Women Don't Want White Men. Black Women Want Black Men. Latina Women Want Latino Men. Black Women and Latina Women need to stop allowing themselves to be proxies in White Women's fight against White Men.

White Women earn more than both Black Men and Latino Men. PROBLEM. Black Men and Latino Men are like, 'WTF?' and they should be. They get all of the negatives of the Gender Wars, with none of the positives.... yet White Women fight Black and Latino Men just as hard as -- if not harder than -- their brothers and husbands, the White Man. PROBLEM. And Black Women and Latina Women are supposed to Fight Their Brothers and Husbands, in this generic Gender War where generic really means 'White', instead of uplifting and supporting them so that they can reach the level of even a White Woman. PROBLEM.

Asians, again, don't enter the equation because they are on an entirely different ladder... they get the all the benefits (including power!), and none of the negatives. That's the benefit of never biatching, and letting other people do it for you, and looking down at those who do fight even while you reap the benefits.

* You don't sit at their table, you sit with the rest of the country.
- Again, I took offense at you underscoring the status quo, and not finding a problem with Whites on Top. Oh noes, White Women Don't Sit With White Men, How Insulting. Oh noes, White Women are separate from Women of Color, Women of Color are Grouped with Men of Color, but White Women are Unique and deserve more.

You didn't write those first couple sentences as if you were parodying what you believed Republicans thought. If it was a parody, then I apologize for misreading you. But it did not appear you were parodying. It appeared you were trying to get in on White Women's good side by saying' hey, look at what that White Male douchnozzle believes, can you believe he actually grouped you with those Blacks and Latinos? The nerve of him, when you should be seated beside him above Blacks and Latinos, are you not insulted?'

* obviously 45% of female voters didn't vote that way because they want to follow their husband's commands like he in turn follows god's.
- Who's to say they don't? Takes all types. The call to be homemaker is very real in women, just as the call to be breadwinner is very real in men. The race gap does multiple types of damage in that arena. I fear the day when White Women get what they want, and call it a day -- a Victory for Women -- while meanwhile the Women of Color and the Man of Color are still left behind, their own battles ignored and silenced.

* But I do think that your party will accept anything short of Todd Akin's comments when it comes to misogynistic bullshiat,
- Misogyny against White Women is noted; misogyny against Women of Color.. is not. Misandry against Men of Color should have been noted, but was wiped out by sucking up to White Women.

* it might behoove the rest of you, male or female, white or black, to try to shut these farkers up and remove their influence on your party.
- Better to know what is in someone's heart, than to be in the dark. You are right, however, the Republican party needs a major housecleaning. I'm hoping that the loss of Romney the RINO as backed by Israel First Interests is the first step. Housecleaning doesn't come immediately, it takes time to realize what the problem is and to then fix the problem. It can be done, though; those inches will become feet will become yards will become miles. That is my Impossible Dream.

TL;DR part II: it looked like you were supporting the status quo.
