Funny though, isn't it, how 911 doesn't get jammed with "man pointing gun" reports whenever a real cop is hiding in bushes with a radar gun? It's almost like people do know what a radar gun looks like, and don't waste anyone's time. Unless they're trying to get a neighbor in trouble, or executed, for perfectly legal activity?

If you're driving too fast to tell whether it's a real gun or a radar gun, you're just incriminating yourself for speeding. This just does not add up to a genuine case of concern for anyone's safety, which makes the drawing of real guns to be excessive force, and probably wouldn't have been apologized for if it hadn't made the news.

The cops will "mistake" any g-damn thing they like in order to justify pointing their little hand-held agony and death launchers. And the always get away with it. POW! Oops! Oh, that poor *cop*..... he must be feeling terrible right now. Punishment enough. Widow of the victim? Meh. She should be satisfied that an internal investigation determined there were no violations of policy.

Sin_City_Superhero: DeSpain told Madison.com it isn't illegal for someone to aim a radar gun at traffic, and the man was allowed to keep it.

"He apologized numerous times," DeSpain said.

The cops should be the ones issuing the apology. They drew-down on, and handcuffed a 70-year old man who wasn't breaking the law.

cgraves67: I could totally see some of the old fogies in my neighborhood doing this. They retire and get bored, so they appoint themselves busybody neighborhood pocket dictator.

Yeah, me too. Called us on an hoa violation.
However, that man got shiat done.
Pothole? Fixed.
Street sign? Installed.
Snow? Plowed.

I miss him sometimes.

tukatz: Not a crime, but you could get in legal trouble if someone's sleazy lawyer proves that your creation caused an accident by distracting someone. "And then I ran into those 5 parked cars because I was too busy staring at the squad car and putting my cell phone down."

That's not an excuse that's likely to fly in court. It's still distracted driving if you're paying attention to something else and not where your vehicle is going. You can't sue a radio station if the Morning Zoo DJs make you laugh so hard you lose control and hit a school bus (well, you could, but I doubt you'd win).

No, no, no.
They mistook it for a rail-gun or Uzi.

Unless they mistook it for a real gun. Then they are idiots.

Benjimin_Dover: So these cops don't know what a radar gun looks like? I call BS.

No, the passing motorists that reported it don't know what a radar gun looks like. The cops are simply responding to a call that someone is pointing a gun at people.

grinding_journalist: tukatz: So the old coot was impersonating a police officer by showing everyone his radar gun?

I hope his wife bans him to months of raking leaves and coupon clipping.

Would it be a crime to create a life-size 2d replica (vinyl or wood) of the profile of a cop car and leave it almost-visible on your property? People speed on my street all the time, and my driveway is situated in such a way that I could hide my "cop car" in it and have it be seen from both directions. I feel like this is probably a crime, just because.

NO that isn't illegal. DO IT!

My brother bought a used cop car and put the antennae back on it so that it looked like an unmarked cruiser. He got annoyed with it because people always drove slowly in front of him. People also drove by our house slowly. It's completely legal unless you try to pull some one over.

I don't know that the image of a cop car would be legal though. Just go blow a couple thousand on a worn out white Impala and stick antennae on the trunk lid and paint the steel rims black. Park it in your driveway. You're good as gold.
