Haven't seen either of the first two. Are they any good?

Both were entertaining, with the first being slightly better.

Pity that Cage won't be in the third, as he'd be the PERFECT nemesis....

I watched the first one but it was boring as hell so I shut it off about an hour in. Maybe all the biatching explosions are in the last half hour. I'll never know.

Agreed!

Also, my favorite from the last film was definitely Van Damme. He just hit the narcissist villain thing on the head.

Anyone ever watch the movie JCVD? It's in French, but subtitled. Brilliant piece of cinema. :-)

No I haven't, but are we talking good foreign action films? My vote: Raid Redemption.

Best pure action movie IMO

Great premise, but terrible dialogue and acting

Maybe they were intentionally going for that level of cheese, but the lines were delivered uneven and flat, as if the characters didn't actually understand the very puns and quips they volleyed at each other. Like they were literally reading cue cards.

And having every character express themselves in that same flat, faux-witty banter made the movie feel very affected. There's no personality or differentiation of style when everyone talks the same way. I'm sure the jokes looked funny on paper but something seriously went wrong when they transcribed to screen. Or maybe it was the piss-poor direction.

Good action scenes though.

I only remember the second one but yeah, they constantly threw out each other's catch phrases. And it doesn't help that none of their catch phrases are particularly clever. So everyone is telling Arnold that "he's back", And "yippie kay yay" is thrown around, etc. Basically it's a movie that should have been made in the 90s when they were all busy opening Planet Hollywoods. But true, good action scenes.

Absolutely. He clearly drew from deceased pal Raul Julia's "Street Fighter" performance.

I haven't seen the second one, but I laughed myself silly during the first one. Seriously funny stuff. So over the top it was amazing.

True.

Sylvester Stallone's acting ability is clearly diminishing as he ages. I still tear up while watching Death Race 2000. It's not due to the actual lines. "Yeah? Well I happen to hold the clam sauce," doesn't evoke emotion in itself. It's Stallone's delivery that gets me.

Statham was off his game, as well. Known best for his comedic timing, he was at the top of his game in Crank. The way he delivers the line, "Don't pop a blood vessel, you little penis" evoked a style not seen since Pryor was at the top of his game. That was missing in The Expendables.

All in all, it was a total disappointment. The script tried to replace the lack of story with explosions and the poor performances from otherwise gifted actors turned what should have been an Oscar favorite into just another "shoot em up".

Wesley Snipes. They should spring him from jail for the movie. In fact they could actually film themselves breaking him out of prison and use the footage for the movie.

These movies are pretty much my for my age group. And the first two were stupid, mindless, loud and ridiculous. And I loved every minute of them. But the point has been made and has pretty much run the course. Cage does not fit in with the rest of the cast. These are (mostly) 80's action heroes blowing shiat up just like in the 80's. Con Air came out in 1997 for Pete's sake!

Getting Van Damme in the last one was good enough for me. If you absolutely must do another, then I'd try for Carl Weathers, Steven Seagall and Bolo Yeung. But not Nick Cage.
