Romans 13:1 Every person should obey the government in power. No government would exist if it hadn't been established by God. The governments which exist have been put in place by God.

Ive seen this posted by a few friends, im not sure how it interpret this, but it sounds like one of the craziest things in that book.

queezyweezel: From my friends:
*all cars are being made in mexico and china since Obama took office
* how can you care about issues like gay marriage and equal rights when so many people are unemployed?
*Obama is so weak that the international community laughs at us. I'm voting Romney because we're not pussies
*If he lied about Benghazi, what else is he lying about? I can't trust him, so I'm voting Romeny.

/facepalm

Nine out of ten times something "political" spews out of someone's mouth, I feel a facepalm coming on. Seriously, there's a shiny spot on my forehead now.

(c&p'd from fb before bahletion)

glad this is all over with... we all know obama has more important things to worry about.... like shooting some hoops! good job people.. good job. back to the walfare lines ya go ;)

Coming from someone who's on Medicaid for being a good little American breeder, it was just too much to stomach.

I have an aunt who gets on Facebook every once in awhile and provides me with some entertainment. Here was last night's gem:

I really do not want to hear no more people complain about not having a job. You voted for less jobs. so sad

It reminds me of Bill Hicks razzing on pro-life people. "Pro-life? You sure look it." It seems like everybody who's weighing in like this has that high forehead and open-mouthed look, my poor, fool aunt being no exception. Their grammar and punctuation is icing on the cake.

Silly Jesus: 1. Woman on phone at the grocery store. - "Christ is still the King and he has a plan for us. He will cast his vote."
2. Woman behind me in line to vote. - "Votin' is important. I gots to keep my check a comin'."

Guess who each voted for?

I still can't believe that we still allow ignorant / low information / outright retarded people to vote. Hell, a first grade math test would have likely thrown these two wastes of air out of the process.

At least the second woman has her vote grounded on ( self-centered ) reality.

/ however, that is pretty pathetic...

Much of my life has been surprisingly sedate, politically speaking.

My folks aren't thrilled about Obama winning, at all. But you know, they didn't want Romney either, at all.

Keep in mind, my father is in on those "funny e-mail circles" that are little more than echo-chambers for right-wing talking points. You know? The ones that are at least 50% utter BS by volume? My mother's a devout Catholic, so you know she has to vote for the candidate who isn't "murdering" babies.

Yet neither of them cared enough for Romney to lend him a hand.

Pretty much reaffirms what I've been saying since the Republican Caucus was finally cemented: if the right would kindly stop turning out a bevvy of candidates which more closely resemble the Legion of Doom from the old Superfriends cartoon, we might actually be able to find one candidate among them who actually might be electable.

No, really. The Right just keeps on jumping the damn shark every election. I don't get it. The people who win you elections- whether you're on the Right or Left side of the aisle are those of us who could (all things being equal) vote either way. Why go out of your way to insult their sensibilities? Doesn't make much sense.

That said, the "derpiest" thing to come out of all the political rhetoric being slung around in my life was that my folks felt no one should vote at all to "send the country a message".

I used to say stuff like this when I was, oh I dunno, thirteen, and I had only the vaguest understanding of how our political system works. And make no mistake, I'm not really settled on Obama. If I had a better choice, I might have made it here. But all things considered, he hasn't done a terrible job (save within the padded walls of those aforementioned echo-chambers), and to my mind, he's still a better choice than Romney.

Made me giggle, anyway. My parents' little regression. But more seriously, if in this kind of a race, you can't even win over voters like them, you have a serious image problem. Still waiting for the "sane" Republican party to show it's face here. Haven't given up hope just yet, but man it's disparaging.

mgshamster: This is from a physician I used to work with:

"I can't believe this race is even close. Obama is out on the road with Springsteen and Jay-Z trying to be cool and Romney is out talking about real issues like creating jobs and drawing larger crowds on his own. I guess Obama voters want America to be more like countries like Spain and Greece and Italy. Less freedom, more regulations, higher taxes, lower growth, higher unemployment and debt. Romney wants to take us back to the ideals that founded this country. Remember liberty. Obama is dividing us into demographics. The fake war on women. He is running on hand-outs to women like $10/month birth control, give aways to unions that are destroying states across the unions, green energy pleas (even after the billions that he gave away to certain green companies with our money), highering teachers (how does the federal government do that?), and taxing the rich (those evil people who have worked hard for their money in a supposedly free country).Yet his record shows he is incompetent, and has failed us as a nation. he has divided us. He is angry, and negative. And he let our Seals and our Ambassador die for no good reason. And things will get worse if he is re-elected."

Yknow this isnt that bad.

It's a rational interpretation of information. The information happens to be false, but at least it's a rational interpretation thereof. This is basically why FOX News is so dangerous. It turns rational people into farktards because its so flimsily based in facts, even people who are able to make rational decisions don't because they don't have good information upon which decisions can be based.

This morning when I got up, I found a post from a friend of mine on FB...while I can't transcribe her exact words, I do remember she began by ominously stating, "the 2 emotions I am feeling right now are heartbreak and fear...". She then went on to paint a scene wherein she was clutching her children close to her, no doubt huddled into some darkened, charred fallout shelter with shadows deepening around her...the end of our nation was near. Her family would be annihilated by poverty and socialism...her children's future would be choked out by a dying economy, although it wouldn't matter much since they would soon be herded into re-education camps to be brainwashed for Obama's new world order.

That's training, not education.

This is way late in every sense, but it made me spit my tea this morning. My step-sister posted it on FB (she's a HS drama teacher):

Proof that every high schooler's stubborn political views are purely fact based: "I heard Romney is not gonna let women wear Tampons."

Father_Jack: It turns rational people into farktards because its so flimsily based in facts

While I don't care for Fox, I think you're incorrect about the danger it poses to "rational people". Rational people realize that there isn't a way to relay information without placing some sort of bias on it.

In that sense, Reason dictates that Fox is little more than that concept let to run amok. But even in the best of circumstances, the Rational mind knows that, like a healthy, balanced diet, getting your news from multiple sources, and never taking any one interpretation as law is the least likely to leave you with clogged arteries, an obesity problem, and ultimately congestive heart failure... metaphorically speaking.

That said, Fox is insidious, sure. But like all sticks and stones, it's only as harmful to you as you allow it to be.

Does any rational person confuse an illusion of authority with the assurance of infallibility? I don't think so. I admit, what you call "rational people" and how I think of them may be different. And I think the margin by which this election was won is a statement regarding just how many people respond to rational thinking out there.

2012-11-07 08:32:51 AM
I had a friend post on her facebook that she was afraid of Romney because.

1. He'll immediately invalidate my marriage(She's a lesbian)
2. Take away my birth control(Why is a lesbian married to a woman on birth control?)
3. Ban abortion nationwide(reminders of Roe v Wade went unacknowledged)
4. Allow my employer to cut my pay because I'm a woman.

I guess logic often gives way to irrational fear.

Thanks for the reply.

I think fundamentally youre correct in theory, and on paper I agree with you. This is the logical way to gather information and learn about something.

My anecdotal experience is inclined to disagree, however, that this what people do with politics in the US as a country. We do to an extent, but we don't "study" issues as a people. I do think that when one hears the same message over and over and it agrees with your "gut feeling", one becomes disinclined to question and "seek out the truth"; if an idea jives with your instinctive proclivity or hidden sort of dirty little feelings, one often goes with it.

All the men in my family are college educated, 2 out of three with MBAs. Successful businessmen, wealthy upper middle class people. 2 of em are even rather well travelled and well read and *should* be the kind of people who would do what youd say and be analytical. Theyre not.

Theyre Reagan supporting old school southern California / Orange County Republicans. Ive watched them over the past 10 years go from "normal" republicans in favor of efficient govt, lower taxes for small businesses, less red tape etc to being the type of parrots spouting off about the "death panels", seeing all muslims as al qaeda, buying into the entire speel because "it goes with their gut feeling" and is spouted by the same guys who say the things they do know about and agree with in regards to small business, taxes, etc.

I think FOX is death by a thousand cuts. They get you to watch by saying "say no to big govt" "govt efficiency" "low taxes leads to growth" and these other normal, defensible positions. And after a while you start thinking that global warming is a UN conspiracy out to bring US prosperity to a halt because of jealousy.

Yes that definitely escalated quickly. I'd like to say that living well is its own reward, as I know I'm not an idiot and I know that she married her second cousin, but I got *SO* mad at her comments I had to go for a walk to calm down.

My thing is, and this is the reason I engaged her (and a few other friends) in the first place, you can have your opinion on either candidate and you can even be wrong and hurtful regarding those opinions (though I appreciate reasoned arguments more). However, once you engage in name-calling, that's just juvenile and personally insulting. And then she decided to engage in more name-calling

Understandable.

I have those kinda farktards in my family too (i had to literally threaten my dad with 0 communication and a ban on seeing his granddaughter again before he stopped with the FWD FWD FWD OBAMAS A SECRET MOOOSLIM HOMO emails... and he kept saying „but you NEED TO KNOW THIS"... his earnestness was so sad yet so frustrating, how could he be so freakin' dumb... anyways.. : ) ).

If your family is close, or you have a mediator relative, you should fwd this exchange to your parent whos this coont's sibling and say "THIS is now how we talk to one another in this family?"

And for you, well, I would say you had every right to get pissed and good on you for going on a walk and not falling for the bait and continuing with the tirade.

I always like being christlike in my forgiveness of these sorts of people. Its usually all the more ironic since the ones who are advocating my gay friends be denied rights, innocent arabs be bombed, etc are usually identifying with being Christian, and then there's me, the satan spawn atheist who's preaching tolerance and forgiveness. One of the delicious little ironies in life.

Good luck.

My bro-in-law thinks Obama is quite literally the Anti-Christ. Every time I'd log into facebook, there were these long, rambling diatribes of how Obama was a Nazi Commie Muslim (seriously) and had a big machine ready to start giving everybody the mark of the beast, blah blah blah...

Then he started preaching religion at me. He refused to stop, so I de-friended his crazy ass.

Another good one: When Mike Huckabee basically told people they would go to Hell if they voted for Obama.

2012-11-07 08:59:37 AM
Had a friend post about how they're voting for the candidate that will defend the Bible instead of changing it all.

They're a Romney supporter that had apparently never heard of the Book of Mormon.

1 - Vote Mitt Romney to protect marriage for our children, the next generation.

2 - (after Obama was announced the winner) I wonder if I should pull out my retirement balance so he can't give it to someone else.

Father_Jack: if an idea jives with your instinctive proclivity or hidden sort of dirty little feelings, one often goes with it.

That's a human tendency that occurs in even the rational mind, I agree. We "shorthand" large concepts we feel we don't have the time (or don't care to expend the effort) to contemplate. Walking the blade's edge is as much an act of will as it is an art though.

For those committed to understanding though, I think we consider it a necessary exercise, and check ourselves when we know we've overstepped.

Father_Jack: All the men in my family are college educated, 2 out of three with MBAs. Successful businessmen, wealthy upper middle class people. 2 of em are even rather well travelled and well read and *should* be the kind of people who would do what youd say and be analytical. Theyre not.

Eh... the criticism that the MBA is the fad degree to have nowadays aside, I'd say here that a rational mind also knows that "time spent in college" is hardly commensurate to one's capacity for critical, analytical thinking. I am not also, by the way, attempting to insult your relations either. Indeed I think their choices might have been more deliberate than you think they are.

To wit? My father- who I spoke of a ways upthread- is a Mechanical Engineer. He knows a great deal, and is far from ignorant, yet in many ways he's more than happy to participate in the mis-informational circle-jerk that is the compulsive forwarding of right-wing talking points via e-mail.

...but he stopped short of throwing himself behind Romney. Why? Not suggesting Romney was the right or wrong choice here. What I am suggesting is that there's some bit of him that, even under pressure, must bow to the contemplative process. He might be having his strings pulled in many ways, but not in this one way.

At his core, he is deliberate by nature. As his son, I know this very well.

Father_Jack: I think FOX is death by a thousand cuts. They get you to watch by saying "say no to big govt" "govt efficiency" "low taxes leads to growth" and these other normal, defensible positions. And after a while you start thinking that global warming is a UN conspiracy out to bring US prosperity to a halt because of jealousy.

Again, you've got to surrender that ground, and you have to do it willingly. I don't think the truly rational give up that easily. No more than violent video games force children to become violent can Fox news force people to abandon critical thinking.

But again, I do think it takes an exceptional amount of will to hold that line. In accordance with the exceptional, there are also exceptionally few that can truly do so.

I will NOT call him president. HE IS NOT MY PRESIDENT. He wasn't my president before this election, he will not be my president this election and he will not be my ex-president. He will not be my king, my ruler.....NOTHING!!!

Welcome to the Socialist of America...the NEWEST THIRD WORLD COUNTRY.

Longer ranting from the same chick:

Wow...we are in trouble now. Obama another four years...are you kidding me??? I just want to thank the obama supporters...I want to say thank you for another four years of pure hell, of struggling, of no jobs, of having a nanny Government, of our tax dollars paying for people to sit on their azz, of small business's going under because obama will tax them to death, of the middle and lower class losing homes and being taxed even more. I want to thank you for a higher deficit, and having China own America, I want to thank you for wanting to live in a socialist communist Country. The America we knew, is no longer anymore. I also want to thank you for allowing College rates to go up, so now I (and many others) will either not be able to afford college or they will have to quit college. Thank you so much for your heart felt concern and compassion. Just because the last four years didn't EFFECT you, doesn't mean it didn't effect anyone else you may know. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME ONCE AND FOR ALL WHAT IS GOING TO BE SO DIFFERENT THIS TIME AROUND, THAN IT WAS THE LAST FOUR YEARS???? All anyone has stated is what he is SUPPOSEDLY going to do in the next 4 yrs! Who is he going to blame now??? He will not be my President, I will not call him a President until he can prove and show that he will "move forward" and "change" what he destroyed the last four years. He has to prove that he will turn America around, like he should have done the first four years.

The Government should not have to provide birth control to any man or woman. In fact the Government should stay out of the bedrooms of every American. It is none of the Governments business. Every American should be RESPONSIBLE for themselves. My tax dollars should not be used for abortions or any protection of any kind. BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOURSELF!!!!!

I voted for romney, because he isn't black...

From a welder I work with:
"Obama only won because Romney conceded."

It doesn't work that way!

Quotes from a family member (and member of the military) on Facebook, spelling errors left intact:

"How can you put a guy back in office who completely disrespects are country every time he refuses to put his hand over his heart when he sees are flag....he supports the troops my ass.....the leader of are country yet he disrespects everyone in it"

"I can't wait tell he threatens not to pay the military again that's always fun"

There's so much wrong with those statements I don't know where to start.

Canadian here, in a sea of Facebook posts jubilant about Obama's victory there was one lone sour grapes post.

From my American Ex :

"Guess we better move to Asia"

I so badly wanted to reply, "Yup, that's a great place for people who don't respect democracy."

But then I remembered she just posted that for attention.

My brother posted this status message on facebook:

So four more years of Obama. I hope that obamacare, the 99 weeks unemployment checks, and all the social programs are all worth it. Thanks to the social parasites, the lazzyasses, and the moochers for helping in the destruction of this noble country. I guess I am moving to Chile to go and work with [company]...

Guess everyone who voted for Obama is a social parasite/lazyass/moocher.

Isn't Chile even more liberal than the US? They have a lady president and everything.

I swear I will have to stay off Facebook for awhile now that Obama has been declared the winner. Yesterday it was all "Jesus wants us to vote for Mitt" and today it is all "hey we are praising god anyway." Religion makes me ill when it comes to government. I really wish people were more logical and less magical-thinking.....didn't think either of the main candidates should be allowed to run this country but I guess Obama-phone vs. Jaysus was really the only option we Americans left ourselves.

Taken from a bible belt dwelling cousin's Facebook page:
"Taken from a friend and I agree 100%: I will vote for the most pro-life candidate, because God hates the shedding of innocent blood (Proverbs 6:17). I will vote for the most pro-Israel candidate because God blesses those who Bless Israel & curses those who don't (Genesis 12:3). I will vote for the most pro-debt reduction candidate, because the borrower is servant to the lender (Proverbs 22:7). I w
ill vote for the most pro-work candidate because God says if a man won't work let him not eat. (2 Thessalonians 3:10) I will vote for the most Pro-Marriage candidate because God is for marriage as defined in (Genesis 2:24). I will vote for the candidate who most closely believes government's purpose is to reward good & punish evil (Romans 13). I will vote based as close as I can on God's Word (2 Timothy 3:16) WILL YOU PRAY FOR THIS NATION AND ITS FUTURE LEADERS TODAY! Our freedoms are at stake!"

In other words, derp derp derpity derp derp derp

My friend wrote this about the presidential election:
Oh well, Four more years. Wonder what people will think when they realize he's only President and he has term limits. Sucks for whoever is going to have to follow up his act. So we reelected a guy who allowed our citizens to die in a foreign country and lies because we were duped by a guy who lied to us when he was President, even though he sold out his wife. We get the results we deserve...

and a combo husband and wife comment about the Massachusetts Scott Brown/Elizabeth Warren race,

Congratulation to Massachusetts for allowing Washington and the Democratic Party to shove a candidate down our throats and get that bipartisan taste out our mouths. You just tossed a home grown son away for a lady whose vote is whatever the President and party wants, by her own admission.
Congrats on throwing away our place in government.

So true, the f***ing plus sucks... I'm still willing to move well out of this stupid state. Regardless of ther president, we should have a congress and senate willing to work well with otehrs, not here... Oh and fake Kennedy got elected... WHAT is wrong with and independent thinker?!? what,s eriously, no what we need are yes men and women, that'll really show 'em... no fiscal or personal responsibility, jesus I hate this state with a passion.... just sayin'

Relative: Unemployment climbed to highest levels as soon as Obama took office.

Me: Pulling up Department of Labor graphs shows unemployment climbing during the last several months of Bush's terms, and leveling and slowly dropping under Obama within the first 6 mos.

Relative: Well...Job creators and business men have a way of predicting who is going to win elections. They knew Obama was going to win, and when a democrat come in to power, they divest and jobs are lost. They just don't trust Obama. As a banker in the 90s, I saw this exact thing happen when Clinton came in. The business men stopped investing in local businesses.

Me: Clinton saw the greatest boon in the US economy since the end of WWII.

Relative: ...I'm telling you that's what happens and the economy goes bad. (((herpaderp)))

Me: Well then it sounds to me like we don't want these sorts of people's money doing all the talking.

Relative: Well, see what happens if Obama wins another term.

Me: I'm going to be watching these business men and the GOP obstructionists even closer.

I then was pressured in to betting who was going to win the Presidency. Collecting my steak dinner from this person may not be as fun as I'd like it to be.

One of my friends posted this lovely bit of scripture:

Mosiah 29:26 Now it is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right; but it is common for the lesser part of the people to desire that which is not right; therefore this shall ye observe and make it your law-to do your business by the voice of the people.

29:27 And if the time comes that the voice of the people doth choose iniquity, then is the time that the judgments of God will come upon you; yea, then is the time he will visit you with great destruction even as he has hitherto visited this land.

Real subtle.
