Sooo....they voted for Obama? Awesome.

My boss and a coworker were talking about all the guns they were going to buy in the next week if Obama gets re-elected because soon it would be illegal to buy them. Then they fantasized about all the killing they'd do when "they come for our guns".

I normally love and respect these people, but something about politics turns people into brainless goobers.

Glenn Beck, of course. My mother watches that moron assiduously, and hangs off his every word. And not just that moron - Rush Limbaugh & Sean Hannity also toss in their derp, and she rolls it all up and decides that Obama is, indeed, the half-black sekrit Muslim Kenyan Manchurian Candidate anti-Christ they all claim he is, so that's the bad news.

The good news is that she lives in Georgia, calls once every few weeks, and knows enough to not talk politics with me, because she apparently hates being openly mocked.

My mom, quietly: "I hope Romney wins. You know, Obama is a Muslim. He wears that ring that proves he is.
And, anyway, I'd rather have a Christian in the White House."

So I sent her links to Snopes, debunking the ring thing, and a link to how Mormon beliefs differ from "mainstream" christianity.

She replied (nicely!) with an email "proving" that Snopes was funded by Obama because of some stuff with Kagan.

I sent her back this, and then we stopped trading emails.

Its amazing that everyone is biatching about the derp from the right but ignoring the derp on the left about how mitt is evil rich, when a co worker said that earlier I just asked who among to dems are poor, most are richer than you will ever dream of being.

The derp is strong on both sides, but it doesnt matter since both sides are out to fark us, that fact is only obvious to those on the right who distrust their party but still hate the left for their bullshiat.

Believing in honest politicians is like believing in god, there is never proof on either one but people just cling to their chosen side.

When asked if it changed the vote to Romney she said no it just didn't register a vote for anyone in the presidential race.

"We are so close to kicking the muslims and communists out of the White House and Congress...WE CAN DO IT!!! Have them ALL brought up on charges of treason and high crimes!"

"Remember and never forget, obama in his own words said, "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction." He has proven it. VOTE HIM OUT then have him arrested & charged with the murders of 4 Americans in Libya and 13 in Ft. Hood."

"If any of my conservative FB friends have XXXX as a friend, you need to seriously talk with this young man about how the muslims are here to destroy us, and their leader is obama."

Every. day.

dmax: My mom, quietly: "I hope Romney wins.

Capt. Sparkles: I forgot to take a picture of it, but I found a post-it note stuck to a gas pump a few weeks ago that said this:

October 16th, 2007. $1.93/gallon
October 16th, 2012 (that day's date). $3.69/gallon
How is that hope and change we can believe in?

Nothing like cherry picking data, huh? I'd have stuck one next to it that said:
August 18, 2008: $4.20/gallon
Today, $_.__/gallon (fill in the blank) (it's 3.25 today across the street)

Huh. Surprisingly no email forwards from the family. I am disappoint.

I did get this one from Judson Philips. Well, it was a lot longer, but this was the end of it.

What is He Really Up To?

Here is a simple explanation of who Barack Hussein Obama is and what he's really up to:

Barack Hussein Obama is a Marxist socialist revolutionary and his goal is to transform the Unites States of America into a socialist state.

It really is that simple.

Oh, he certainly has secondary goals. He believes that America is too powerful and must be brought down economically and militarily; hence the multi-trillion dollar debt, trillion dollar annual deficits, the debilitating attacks on the military, and the dismantling of our industrial and energy sectors. He believes that America is an oppressor nation that should be made to pay restitution to oppressed minorities, inside the USA and elsewhere. He has other, equally destructive, goals and ambitions.

We have a President, a major political party, and mainstream news media, which see America as the enemy. Obama's goals are transparent, and there are many of us who do not want him to succeed. The real question is: What are Americans going to do about Obama and his socialist fellow travelers? It is not possible to make a composition with them. Their aim is to destroy us.

Are we going to fight them with every resource at our disposal? Or are we going to let them win?

Whatever the outcome of November 6, each of us has a personal decision to make. And then we must take action.

I was campaigning at the polls for Maryland Marriage Equality from 6-2 today. I'm copying this from my facebook because I'm lazy...

The Republican campaigner kept trying to start a fight with me. The No on 6 guy was pretty cool and we would chat at breaks in the people. I was asking a question about ballot measure B here in Montgomery County. She started asking about how it is inequality when god made man and woman and the bible says what marriage is. (If you do not know question B here is taking collective bargaining rights away from police officers.) So I finally rise to the bait and say "Well I'm not the property of my husband many more and a guy can't rape me andaen get tnd tho marry me after giving my Dad silver. At least not yet" She says NO that's not in the Christian Bible that's all Muslims like Obama and started to go OFF about secret Muslim plots and birth certificates and secret gay weddings. She kinda ran out of steam when she saw the No on 6, the No on 5, and the no on B (all fellow Republicans) starting at her like she was nuts. Lady was fine all day after that. It was a fun day but I may not be warm until next year.

Silly Jesus: I still can't believe that we still allow ignorant / low information / outright retarded people to vote

These are the types of people who tend to get all shooty and stabby if they feel like their voice isn't being heard. They get a single vote each and in return the nation gets a stable, though often dysfunctional, government. Plus plenty of otherwise smart people have their brains turn into tapioca when it comes to politics so I'm not sure many of them do a much better job of evaluating the candidates.

Derpiest election derp that ever derped from my (Catholic--that'll be relevant) cousin:

Obama's a Muslim, hell bent on destroying the country. When I pointed out that a) Obama's not a Muslim, b) the percentage of Muslims who are terrorists is actually quit small compared to the 1.7 billion-ish regular people who aren't extremist murderers who also happen to be Muslim, I got back something along the lines of, "Yes, defend the religion of psychopaths founded by a pedophile. Muhammad was a pedophile and so is everyone that follows him."

Mind you, I'm a Christian and registered Independent - fiscally conservative but socially reasonably liberal. Didn't vote for Obama in '08, didn't vote for him OR Romney today. But I'm pretty anal-retentive about having your facts straight.

So I came back with something like, "Uh... we Christians have our own psychopaths that blow up abortion clinics, blame acts of God/nature on pacts with the devil/Divine judgment/retribution, and slaughter millions in the name of our God. That doesn't make all of us extremist idiots. And speaking of pedophiles, do you really want me to start linking articles with the names of pedophiles in the Catholic Church, since by your logic, anyone who follows a pedophile is also a pedophile? Pretty sure a lot of Catholics would take exception to that one..."

I did early voting, early on a weekday. The couple in front of me were having a conversation together, but having it "at" everybody else -- the type of conversation where they're both very loud, pausing between statements to let their words sink in, looking around and making eye contact with the people around them as they talk. Anyway, at one point, the man made the statement, "Anybody that votes for Obama deserves what they get".

I still don't know what that means.

I'm currently reading this book from 1930 "the dictatorship on trial" . In it, the foreword is written by Winston Churchill. It speaks of the failure of democracy due to universal sufferage. It goes on to praise Franco in Spain and Mussolini in Italy. It claims that charlatans and manipulators get in due to manipulating the masses. It also speaks of an electorate who votes only those that further their personal interests with a welfare state.

It worries me, that 80 years after this book. AFter the blatant failure and endemic evil of dictatorships that this book seems to hold some truth and that the people want to be ruled by malevolent charismatics.

Now, I'm not calling Obama that. I feel he is the lesser of two evils. He's certainly not a power mad, sociopathic VC like Romney. However, he needs to fight the tide so that we don't become the bleak nightmare hellscape of dictatorship or welfare state or even a hybrid of the two.

And here - see - this IS where the division lies. I've been seeing it more and more.
Republicans are conservative Christians.
Democrats may be Christians, but are by and large not following the conservative line.

Neither one of the candidates will solve all of the BIG world problems: Useless wars, out of control deficit, unemployment, etc, etc etc... So that doesn't matter.
But for me... When I saw all those clips about Romney wanting to end Planned Parenthood, and repeal Roe Vs. Wade... That was the game breaker for me.

And btw: In this world in the state that it's in... Do we really want a conservative Christian in the most powerful office on the planet?! When the Muslim world already wants us all dead?! I don't think so. That would just be outrageously f'n stupid. And from some preliminary results, it looks like it's going that way.

This country is full of idiots.

Not too bad, but there is a woman in my office that "was thinking" about voting for Obama because Romney was going to "do away with" Medicare.

I'm not voting Romney by any means, but know that is not the choice you are making when voting. I also wondered how and why a self absorbed healthy mid-20's female would give a shiat about Medicare. Going by her normal conversation topics, she cares more about The Real Housewives of Atlanta, not Medicare.

So I said "I don't think Medicare is going away completely no matter who wins. At worst, it might get turned into block grants to the states."
Her:" Block what?"
Me: " The states get the money and manage the programs rather than the Federal government."
Her: "Oh. Georgia sucks too."

So I never found out want I wanted to know.

(The theory is that Jesus is meant to be King of Earth in the long run, so there's no point to voting for humans in the meantime.) She didn't explain this, and simply said "I voted for Jesus."

There was a pause, then the woman on the other end of the line attempted to confirm, "So... Bush?"

I don't know which is funniest. The addition of taxes to pay for sex-change ops (pro-tip: laws are written by the Congress. The House has a Republican majority)? The lie about the power of God being in the Constitution ("no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States." - Article VI of that Constitution)? Or the idea that God wants America to do well, but only if enough people bow down and change his mind? Tolerance is a bad thing for the religious?

I have a stockbroker friend who explained very smugly the problem with obamacare that all the experts missed apparently and the reason he is voting Romney; "since people can't be denied coverage for preexisting conditions they will pay the $95 penalty for not having insurance and wait until they get really sick to sign up. This means all our premiums are going to go up since people won't be paying into the system until they need to."

He was really proud of this analysis and...smug. Like he was the expert finance guy who had seen through all the bull the dems were putting out and knew the truth.

I didn't want to get into an argument about healthcare since it is so complex none of us truly understand it all and the argument will be never ending, but I did explain that every analysis of obamacare has shown it will increase the number of insured, not decrease it. He made some snide and dismissive remarks but didn't actually address anything I said, I'm guessing because he no factual response to anything I said.

Now there will be no one to stop them from being held responsible for all the things they claim they are for.

Don't Troll Me Bro!: Capt.

How about we go with your date then:
August 18, 2008: 6.1% unemployment, 66.1% participation rate
Today: 7.9% unemployment, 63.8% participation rate

Is this how the game works?

One of my students told me that Barack Obama's father is not the one listed on his birth certificate. His biological father is a Communist, making him one too.

You see, when Obama's mother was knocked up by a black Communist, her dad was so pissed that he had to find a man who could stand in as the biological dad. He finds Barack Obama's dad--the one listed on the birth certificate--and through his connections at the State Department, gets this PhD student's visa changed into a resident visa and gets him to marry his already pregnant daughter, thereby making his soon-to-be-born grandchild (Obama) a Muslim, but not a Communist.

Then he tells me that if Obama is reelected, he is going to work with Hillary Clinton to ban the sale of all forms of ammunition for guns of any kind. So he is going to invest in the equipment to make his own bullets. And he is going to buy as many kinds of guns as possible as they will soon work to make the sale of guns illegal--since you cannot own the ammunition, there is no reason to have the guns the bullets go in.

This is true for single, childless, adult, males aged 18-30. The good news is very few of them get sick so it won't matter at least that is what my hospital administrator friend told me. She explained the majority of men in their 20s just don't go to the doctor, ever, and when they do go it is cheaper for them to pay the going clinic rates than to carry insurance.

So that narrow demographic will just keep on keeping on and the few that do come down with a serious condition will buy into the system after diagnosis, however the actuarial tables on that say then number is so small that it will cost each insured person $0.005 a year. So see he was right.

No derp today, but I've been dealing with some in the past few months. One person, who shall remain anonymous, thinks Obama might be the Anti-Christ and is fond of sending out conspiracy theory emails periodically. Another is much more intelligent, but still thinks Obama is going to raise his taxes. When I told him that tax rates for his bracket actually went down, he replied, "Have you seen what's coming?" Presumably that means Obama hasn't done it yet, but will, because... well, who knows? He didn't have anything to back it up, but is still convinced.

The latter is smart, but I think misled. The former is a loving woman, but a serious nut.

The argument I didn't want to get into is that he was partly right, our health insurance costs ARE going to increase, but it's going to be much less due to people gaming obamacare and much more due to health care costs exploding, which is something obamacare doesn't really address. So to me the decision is simple; without obamacare our insurance costs go up, with obamacare our insurance costs will still go up but 30 million more people will have insurance.

The thing is healthcare is so convoluted and complex it's difficult to really understand it and break it down into digestible bits so I didn't even want to get into it...but I stand by my opinion that his "expert" analysis of it was straight derp.

Good question, I'll be sure to use this as a topic for my online classes. Cyber Security is my major, logging into unsecured access points and changing the SSID is one of my hobbies. It's a good time.

Not political, but relevant derp:

Just went to help grandma and my aunt move in to a 50+ retirement community, get the cable working, change light bulbs, fix broken things, do handyman stuff like that. My Other Aunt came up as well to do curtains and other esthetic items.

Just before we all went our separate ways we all went to lunch at a local restaurant. Other Aunt started telling us how she had been talking to all the neighbors, and how they were all glad that they had moved in and wished them well, and how they were glad they weren't... You know...

Grandma didn't know. Grandma is 90+ years old and almost deaf even when she bothers to put her hearing aids in.

I leaned over... "YOU KNOW... YOU'RE NOT BLACK LIKE THE LAST TENANTS!"

Grandma got it.... But you never saw such frantic shooshing and wild handwaving from a self-proclaimed liberal as my Other Aunt acted out at that moment.

It was a long trip back, since OA was providing my ride home. Halfway through the three-hour drive:

OA: "I didn't mean it was because they were black! It's just that they had 18 grandchildren and the neighbors all said they didn't have anything to do when they visited!"

me: mmm. You know, there are white people with lots of grandchildren who can't find entertainment in a retirement community...

OA: "Well, they were all asking what shape the place was in after they left."

me: "Looked pretty good to me. I had to replace 2 light bulbs, and one of the wheels on the sliding shower door track was loose."

OA: (long quiet ride)

OA one hour later: "It's not because they were black!"

/ I do love my aunt.

Are you in NC by any chance? That happens to be true in NC -- a straight ticket vote doesn't cover the president. You have to mark your ballot separately for president.

2) Speaker at a charity dinner I attended a few days ago, "Please go out and vote so we can give America back to Jesus."

The Brits on the Killing of Bin Laden, ...
You've got to watch this one!!! The Brits do have a way of telling things like they really are!!

The British "Commentator" returns to discuss the results of Seal Team 6 doing-in OBL and the aftermath.
The last minute is hilarious. This guy is good . Wish we had a Congress with his kind of guts.

2 near derp moments from my office today:

1. Gal I work with said, yeah, I went and dropped off my ballot today. Another co-worker asked who she voted for, to which she replied, I voted for Romney, but it was my husbands vote (ie, his idea, I would guess) if I could've chosen I would've voted for someone like Gary Johnson. I had a facepalm moment. Either this gal is really dense or her husband is an ogre. Or possibly both.

2. Shortly after that exchange, another person who was outside and kind of in on the conversation started singing, just randomly, Obama, Obama, Obama.....all the way back inside. facepalm 2 moment.

/le sigh

I personally have been busy the last two weeks selling off all my spare rifles and a lot of bulk ammo that I have collected over the past few years.

Hillbillies spent all their cash around the 2008 election in a blind panic, driving up rifle and ammo prices. Fast forward a year or two, and when they were out of cash they dumped them all at a loss. To me.
Now they are in buying panic again, and are buying at stupid prices. I am not going to complain. I'll replace it all buying it back from random hillbillies again in a year at half the price.

/one guy from a couple years ago just called me. Sold me an SKS for $150 in 2010, with a few hundred rounds of ammo included. Bought the same rifle back, this time for $350, no ammo. Same dude.

This lovely campaign flyer arrived in the mail yesterday AND today.

Nice coded language. First, the odd use of the term "reunification", which has special resonance for Koreans.

Then the "Mek-shi-cans are jumping the line ahead of you and your family!"

And the pandering to foreign students who are studying math, science, and engineering, because that's all the Asian brain is good for.

Best of all, the "free tuition at colleges in Massachusetts for good students" line, which obviously means that Romney wants to give my precious kimchi-scented snowflakes a free ride to Harvard, Yale, or MIT.

Here is side 2:

i.imgur.com

Meh, pretty boring "diversity" boilerplate at the top. But what's this at the bottom?

Oh Lordy, Mitt's looking somewhat more... pigmented... than usual. Yellow, even.

And squinty.

And grinning all bucktoothed.

OMG... MITT ROMNEY IS ASIAN... JUST LIKE ME!!!

I have an uncle in Florida who at the age of 45 had a heart attack and began collecting social security disability, retired from his sheriff position and collected the pension from that, as well as continuing to collect his military pension. He told this to my dad (who is the liberal of all liberals) as they took a ride in my uncle's new corvette. He told my dad he really doesn't need the disability checks, but takes them anyway. He remains a staunch republican and he and my dad do not speak anymore due to their political differences. It makes me sad that my dad who has been sick with chrons disease for 40 years will have to work until he dies because he can't afford not to, while this uncle owns brand new cars and boats and has a huge home, but is still sucking off the system. I was on medicaid while pregnant, which automatically qualifies me for food stamps, but I declined them, because I didn't need them.

mpfjr: I voted for Obama because he is black"- Every black person in America

"I voted for Obama because I'm Mexican and want all my family and friends to be given amnesty"-Every Latino in America.

Actually, I had a conversation with an old Hispanic lady who voted loyally as a Republican since she got her permanent residence via Reagan's amnesty in the '80s. She said that she was not going to vote for Republicans for the first time because of all of the hateful things said about Hispanics during the Republican primaries.

Plus, I'm pretty sure Michael Steele, Herman Cain and Clarence Thomas voted for Romney.

Backstory: My grandmother lived with my aunt for the last decade. Her health slowly declined until late September, when she had a few mini-strokes, but still held on. For three weeks. In a hospice bed, catheterized, on morphine for pain, unable to ingest anything other than liquids, before she died on Oct 14.

Familial Derp Experience: From my aunt, as a Facebook post: "Thank God my momma was smart enough to get out while she could."

Uhm.....really? I love my Gran, but it seems like she would have rather avoided the daily suppositories, and other pains of her last days, as opposed to dipping out just before Obama was given a second term. I just don't even understand what Auntie was trying to say. farking dumb, anyways.

Okay, I just experienced a tidal wave of nutty derp about one minute ago, from my mother, in person. Out of the overly dramatic and overly emotional rant, I gathered:

1. Obama is a socialist and communist.

2. Obama will probably refuse to leave office and will become a dictator.

3. Obama and his administration want to take away all constitutional rights.

4. Public college students are no longer allowed to privately gather and pray before sports games.

5. Iraq was definitely building a nuclear bomb to prepare for an attack against the US.

6. Saddam Hussein was best pals with all the middle-eastern terrorists.

7. She would get fired from her job if she said one tiny negative thing about Obama, ever. She works at a public library.

8. Soon religious expression and practice will be outlawed. Because it might offend atheists.

9. Being gay is a sin that develops into a mental illness and it's just as sick and wrong as pedophilia.

10. American businesses already give away nearly all their income to the government in the form of taxes.

11. American businesses are forced to relocate because of the high taxes on them, and after Obama soon takes all their profit, they will all move away.

12. The government is too big and has its nose stuck in what shouldn't be its business. However, nothing can be cited off the top of her head because she actually agrees with the government regulating what she considers sinful.

13. She is literally scared of Obama, and he is as bad as Adolph Hitler. When I commented that I would be scared of Obama too if he became genocidal, she responded that she wouldn't be surprised if he did.

There was more, but I had a hard time keeping track because my brain was frying.

/I knew I'd be more miserable if Obama won, just because I'll have to endure the religious right meltdown of my mom.

This is from a physician I used to work with:

"I can't believe this race is even close. Obama is out on the road with Springsteen and Jay-Z trying to be cool and Romney is out talking about real issues like creating jobs and drawing larger crowds on his own. I guess Obama voters want America to be more like countries like Spain and Greece and Italy. Less freedom, more regulations, higher taxes, lower growth, higher unemployment and debt. Romney wants to take us back to the ideals that founded this country. Remember liberty. Obama is dividing us into demographics. The fake war on women. He is running on hand-outs to women like $10/month birth control, give aways to unions that are destroying states across the unions, green energy pleas (even after the billions that he gave away to certain green companies with our money), highering teachers (how does the federal government do that?), and taxing the rich (those evil people who have worked hard for their money in a supposedly free country).Yet his record shows he is incompetent, and has failed us as a nation. he has divided us. He is angry, and negative. And he let our Seals and our Ambassador die for no good reason. And things will get worse if he is re-elected."

I am quite happy to sell them lots at inflated prices. When the bravado wears off and the rent is due in a few months, they will sell them at a loss for quick cash, and I'll just resell them again to new rednecks at inflated rates next election. Rinse. Repeat.

My husband and i joked that Obama would go on stage and start out with a loud "Allahu Akbar" and then start the next sentence with a mighty "Alhumdulilah!" And end with a nice "InshaAllah." Since we're actually Muslims we found that fun, although the derp-filled backlash would probably be downright scary.

That reminds me of my sister (except she cannot have kids, so no I'm not your uncle). We are in the kitchen and she starts a new conversation topic saying, "You should read a book."

I'm already reading a book at the time, but curious what book she would recommend or if she's falsely insinuating I don't read. She's known to be nice at first then after your guard is down make low blow "sucker punch" insults. So I calmly ask, "What book should I read?"

She replies as her eyes go wide-eyed crazy, "All of them!"

I smile and politely say, "Ok, I will read all the books."

She then gets upset and calls me crazy as she leaves the house.

It reminds me of Bill Hicks razzing on pro-life people. "Pro-life? You sure look it." It seems like everybody who's weighing in like this has that high forehead and open-mouthed look, my poor, fool aunt being no exception. Their grammar and punctuation is icing on the cake.

Guess who each voted for?

I still can't believe that we still allow ignorant / low information / outright retarded people to vote. Hell, a first grade math test would have likely thrown these two wastes of air out of the process.

At least the second woman has her vote grounded on ( self-centered ) reality.

Much of my life has been surprisingly sedate, politically speaking.

My folks aren't thrilled about Obama winning, at all. But you know, they didn't want Romney either, at all.

Keep in mind, my father is in on those "funny e-mail circles" that are little more than echo-chambers for right-wing talking points. You know? The ones that are at least 50% utter BS by volume? My mother's a devout Catholic, so you know she has to vote for the candidate who isn't "murdering" babies.

Yet neither of them cared enough for Romney to lend him a hand.

Pretty much reaffirms what I've been saying since the Republican Caucus was finally cemented: if the right would kindly stop turning out a bevvy of candidates which more closely resemble the Legion of Doom from the old Superfriends cartoon, we might actually be able to find one candidate among them who actually might be electable.

No, really. The Right just keeps on jumping the damn shark every election. I don't get it. The people who win you elections- whether you're on the Right or Left side of the aisle are those of us who could (all things being equal) vote either way. Why go out of your way to insult their sensibilities? Doesn't make much sense.

That said, the "derpiest" thing to come out of all the political rhetoric being slung around in my life was that my folks felt no one should vote at all to "send the country a message".

I used to say stuff like this when I was, oh I dunno, thirteen, and I had only the vaguest understanding of how our political system works. And make no mistake, I'm not really settled on Obama. If I had a better choice, I might have made it here. But all things considered, he hasn't done a terrible job (save within the padded walls of those aforementioned echo-chambers), and to my mind, he's still a better choice than Romney.

Made me giggle, anyway. My parents' little regression. But more seriously, if in this kind of a race, you can't even win over voters like them, you have a serious image problem. Still waiting for the "sane" Republican party to show it's face here. Haven't given up hope just yet, but man it's disparaging.

Yknow this isnt that bad.

It's a rational interpretation of information. The information happens to be false, but at least it's a rational interpretation thereof. This is basically why FOX News is so dangerous. It turns rational people into farktards because its so flimsily based in facts, even people who are able to make rational decisions don't because they don't have good information upon which decisions can be based.

This morning when I got up, I found a post from a friend of mine on FB...while I can't transcribe her exact words, I do remember she began by ominously stating, "the 2 emotions I am feeling right now are heartbreak and fear...". She then went on to paint a scene wherein she was clutching her children close to her, no doubt huddled into some darkened, charred fallout shelter with shadows deepening around her...the end of our nation was near. Her family would be annihilated by poverty and socialism...her children's future would be choked out by a dying economy, although it wouldn't matter much since they would soon be herded into re-education camps to be brainwashed for Obama's new world order.

Father_Jack: It turns rational people into farktards because its so flimsily based in facts

While I don't care for Fox, I think you're incorrect about the danger it poses to "rational people". Rational people realize that there isn't a way to relay information without placing some sort of bias on it.

In that sense, Reason dictates that Fox is little more than that concept let to run amok. But even in the best of circumstances, the Rational mind knows that, like a healthy, balanced diet, getting your news from multiple sources, and never taking any one interpretation as law is the least likely to leave you with clogged arteries, an obesity problem, and ultimately congestive heart failure... metaphorically speaking.

That said, Fox is insidious, sure. But like all sticks and stones, it's only as harmful to you as you allow it to be.

Does any rational person confuse an illusion of authority with the assurance of infallibility? I don't think so. I admit, what you call "rational people" and how I think of them may be different. And I think the margin by which this election was won is a statement regarding just how many people respond to rational thinking out there.

2012-11-07 08:32:51 AM
I had a friend post on her facebook that she was afraid of Romney because.

1. He'll immediately invalidate my marriage(She's a lesbian)
2. Take away my birth control(Why is a lesbian married to a woman on birth control?)
3. Ban abortion nationwide(reminders of Roe v Wade went unacknowledged)
4. Allow my employer to cut my pay because I'm a woman.

I guess logic often gives way to irrational fear.

Thanks for the reply.

I think fundamentally youre correct in theory, and on paper I agree with you. This is the logical way to gather information and learn about something.

My anecdotal experience is inclined to disagree, however, that this what people do with politics in the US as a country. We do to an extent, but we don't "study" issues as a people. I do think that when one hears the same message over and over and it agrees with your "gut feeling", one becomes disinclined to question and "seek out the truth"; if an idea jives with your instinctive proclivity or hidden sort of dirty little feelings, one often goes with it.

All the men in my family are college educated, 2 out of three with MBAs. Successful businessmen, wealthy upper middle class people. 2 of em are even rather well travelled and well read and *should* be the kind of people who would do what youd say and be analytical. Theyre not.

Theyre Reagan supporting old school southern California / Orange County Republicans. Ive watched them over the past 10 years go from "normal" republicans in favor of efficient govt, lower taxes for small businesses, less red tape etc to being the type of parrots spouting off about the "death panels", seeing all muslims as al qaeda, buying into the entire speel because "it goes with their gut feeling" and is spouted by the same guys who say the things they do know about and agree with in regards to small business, taxes, etc.

I think FOX is death by a thousand cuts. They get you to watch by saying "say no to big govt" "govt efficiency" "low taxes leads to growth" and these other normal, defensible positions. And after a while you start thinking that global warming is a UN conspiracy out to bring US prosperity to a halt because of jealousy.

Yes that definitely escalated quickly. I'd like to say that living well is its own reward, as I know I'm not an idiot and I know that she married her second cousin, but I got *SO* mad at her comments I had to go for a walk to calm down.

My thing is, and this is the reason I engaged her (and a few other friends) in the first place, you can have your opinion on either candidate and you can even be wrong and hurtful regarding those opinions (though I appreciate reasoned arguments more). However, once you engage in name-calling, that's just juvenile and personally insulting. And then she decided to engage in more name-calling

Its usually all the more ironic since the ones who are advocating my gay friends be denied rights, innocent arabs be bombed, etc are usually identifying with being Christian, and then there's me, the satan spawn atheist who's preaching tolerance and forgiveness. One of the delicious little ironies in life.

Good luck.

My bro-in-law thinks Obama is quite literally the Anti-Christ. Every time I'd log into facebook, there were these long, rambling diatribes of how Obama was a Nazi Commie Muslim (seriously) and had a big machine ready to start giving everybody the mark of the beast, blah blah blah...

Then he started preaching religion at me. He refused to stop, so I de-friended his crazy ass.

Another good one: When Mike Huckabee basically told people they would go to Hell if they voted for Obama.

Had a friend post about how they're voting for the candidate that will defend the Bible instead of changing it all.

They're a Romney supporter that had apparently never heard of the Book of Mormon.

From Facebook postings I saw yesterday.

1 - Vote Mitt Romney to protect marriage for our children, the next generation.

2 - (after Obama was announced the winner) I wonder if I should pull out my retirement balance so he can't give it to someone else.

Father_Jack: if an idea jives with your instinctive proclivity or hidden sort of dirty little feelings, one often goes with it.

That's a human tendency that occurs in even the rational mind, I agree. We "shorthand" large concepts we feel we don't have the time (or don't care to expend the effort) to contemplate. Walking the blade's edge is as much an act of will as it is an art though.

For those committed to understanding though, I think we consider it a necessary exercise, and check ourselves when we know we've overstepped.

Father_Jack: All the men in my family are college educated, 2 out of three with MBAs. Successful businessmen, wealthy upper middle class people. 2 of em are even rather well travelled and well read and *should* be the kind of people who would do what youd say and be analytical. Theyre not.

Eh... the criticism that the MBA is the fad degree to have nowadays aside, I'd say here that a rational mind also knows that "time spent in college" is hardly commensurate to one's capacity for critical, analytical thinking. I am not also, by the way, attempting to insult your relations either. Indeed I think their choices might have been more deliberate than you think they are.

To wit? My father- who I spoke of a ways upthread- is a Mechanical Engineer. He knows a great deal, and is far from ignorant, yet in many ways he's more than happy to participate in the mis-informational circle-jerk that is the compulsive forwarding of right-wing talking points via e-mail.

...but he stopped short of throwing himself behind Romney. Why? Not suggesting Romney was the right or wrong choice here. What I am suggesting is that there's some bit of him that, even under pressure, must bow to the contemplative process. He might be having his strings pulled in many ways, but not in this one way.

At his core, he is deliberate by nature. As his son, I know this very well.

Father_Jack: I think FOX is death by a thousand cuts. They get you to watch by saying "say no to big govt" "govt efficiency" "low taxes leads to growth" and these other normal, defensible positions. And after a while you start thinking that global warming is a UN conspiracy out to bring US prosperity to a halt because of jealousy.

Again, you've got to surrender that ground, and you have to do it willingly. I don't think the truly rational give up that easily. No more than violent video games force children to become violent can Fox news force people to abandon critical thinking.

But again, I do think it takes an exceptional amount of will to hold that line. In accordance with the exceptional, there are also exceptionally few that can truly do so.

Because periods suck. Birth control can make them easier or less frequent.

And if ManRay's sister's students were right, periods would suck even more after tampons were banned.

Yeah, I guess I forgot that particular derp. Dear old dad seems to be in this camp.

Not sure why this is even a thing. Even assuming by some immense and complete suspension of reality that he is in fact, a muslim, this is only even the remotest of concerns if you think every Muslim is somehow an amoral monster who eats babies and kicked your puppy... every day last week.

...and he still didn't vote Romney.

The butthurt flowing from my Christian friends is epic. In my teens I was quite the evangelical Baptist.(you can fall in with just about any crowd growing up). It's so funny now to see the same people almost ready to lick Mitt's boots.

Longer ranting from the same chick:

Wow...we are in trouble now. Obama another four years...are you kidding me??? I just want to thank the obama supporters...I want to say thank you for another four years of pure hell, of struggling, of no jobs, of having a nanny Government, of our tax dollars paying for people to sit on their azz, of small business's going under because obama will tax them to death, of the middle and lower class losing homes and being taxed even more. I want to thank you for a higher deficit, and having China own America, I want to thank you for wanting to live in a socialist communist Country. The America we knew, is no longer anymore. I also want to thank you for allowing College rates to go up, so now I (and many others) will either not be able to afford college or they will have to quit college. Thank you so much for your heart felt concern and compassion. Just because the last four years didn't EFFECT you, doesn't mean it didn't effect anyone else you may know. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME ONCE AND FOR ALL WHAT IS GOING TO BE SO DIFFERENT THIS TIME AROUND, THAN IT WAS THE LAST FOUR YEARS???? All anyone has stated is what he is SUPPOSEDLY going to do in the next 4 yrs! Who is he going to blame now??? He will not be my President, I will not call him a President until he can prove and show that he will "move forward" and "change" what he destroyed the last four years. He has to prove that he will turn America around, like he should have done the first four years.

--------------------------------------------------------------------- - -------------------------------------------------------

The Government should not have to provide birth control to any man or woman. In fact the Government should stay out of the bedrooms of every American. It is none of the Governments business. Every American should be RESPONSIBLE for themselves. My tax dollars should not be used for abortions or any protection of any kind. BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOURSELF!!!!!

"How can you put a guy back in office who completely disrespects are country every time he refuses to put his hand over his heart when he sees are flag....he supports the troops my ass.....the leader of are country yet he disrespects everyone in it"

"I can't wait tell he threatens not to pay the military again that's always fun"

So four more years of Obama. I hope that obamacare, the 99 weeks unemployment checks, and all the social programs are all worth it. Thanks to the social parasites, the lazzyasses, and the moochers for helping in the destruction of this noble country. I guess I am moving to Chile to go and work with [company]...

Guess everyone who voted for Obama is a social parasite/lazyass/moocher.

Isn't Chile even more liberal than the US? They have a lady president and everything.

I swear I will have to stay off Facebook for awhile now that Obama has been declared the winner. Yesterday it was all "Jesus wants us to vote for Mitt" and today it is all "hey we are praising god anyway." Religion makes me ill when it comes to government. I really wish people were more logical and less magical-thinking.....didn't think either of the main candidates should be allowed to run this country but I guess Obama-phone vs. Jaysus was really the only option we Americans left ourselves.

Oh well, Four more years. Wonder what people will think when they realize he's only President and he has term limits. Sucks for whoever is going to have to follow up his act. So we reelected a guy who allowed our citizens to die in a foreign country and lies because we were duped by a guy who lied to us when he was President, even though he sold out his wife. We get the results we deserve...

and a combo husband and wife comment about the Massachusetts Scott Brown/Elizabeth Warren race,

Congratulation to Massachusetts for allowing Washington and the Democratic Party to shove a candidate down our throats and get that bipartisan taste out our mouths. You just tossed a home grown son away for a lady whose vote is whatever the President and party wants, by her own admission.
Congrats on throwing away our place in government.

So true, the f***ing plus sucks... I'm still willing to move well out of this stupid state. Relative: Unemployment climbed to highest levels as soon as Obama took office.

Me: Pulling up Department of Labor graphs shows unemployment climbing during the last several months of Bush's terms, and leveling and slowly dropping under Obama within the first 6 mos.

Relative: Well...Job creators and business men have a way of predicting who is going to win elections. They knew Obama was going to win, and when a democrat come in to power, they divest and jobs are lost. They just don't trust Obama. As a banker in the 90s, I saw this exact thing happen when Clinton came in. The business men stopped investing in local businesses.

Me: Clinton saw the greatest boon in the US economy since the end of WWII.

Relative: ...I'm telling you that's what happens and the economy goes bad. (((herpaderp)))

Me: Well then it sounds to me like we don't want these sorts of people's money doing all the talking.

Relative: Well, see what happens if Obama wins another term.

Me: I'm going to be watching these business men and the GOP obstructionists even closer.

I then was pressured in to betting who was going to win the Presidency. Collecting my steak dinner from this person may not be as fun as I'd like it to be.

One of my friends posted this lovely bit of scripture:

Mosiah 29:26 Now it is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right; but it is common for the lesser part of the people to desire that which is not right; therefore this shall ye observe and make it your law-to do your business by the voice of the people.

29:27 And if the time comes that the voice of the people doth choose iniquity, then is the time that the judgments of God will come upon you; yea, then is the time he will visit you with great destruction even as he has hitherto visited this land.

Real subtle.

Derpette is off her soapbox about the horrible outcome of the election in my statues/comments. Doesn't mean I won't post pictures. I will now put it to rest and hope and pray that the right decision was made (gotta have faith). I hope that what everyone says will happen, will happen (gotta have faith). Afterwards, We can finish all theses discussion in 4 yrs when he has yet again done nothing in his 4 yr term. But, in the mean time...on a very good note and a very happy note....HE CAN NOT BE ELECTED FOR A THIRD TERM!!!!! We can celebrate that, and look forward to the end of the next four years. We can overcome the obstacles in the way, because we have a greater power on our side and it is not "the ruler obama", it is God!!!! So, lets all pray, have faith and look forward to no more obama in four years. KARMA IS A biatch! :) #TeamRomney2016

Callous: I had a friend post on her facebook that she was afraid of Romney because He'll immediately invalidate my marriage (She's a lesbian)

Romney favored a federal marriage amendment that would invalidate her marriage, and would have signed any sort of antigay law Congress might have handed him.

Take away my birth control(Why is a lesbian married to a woman on birth control?)

"Birth control pills" are used for more than birth control. Romney was in favor of permitting employers to leverage employee's private medical and family planning decisions.

Ban abortion nationwide(reminders of Roe v Wade went unacknowledged)

Romney favored litmus-testing judges, and actually committed to appoint only those who would overturn Roe and reject same-sex marriage.

Allow my employer to cut my pay because I'm a woman.

Romney refused to answer the point-blank question of whether he thought women were entitled to equal pay. Instead he veered off into the infamous "binders full of women" tangent.

Your facebook friend may have phrased things inelegantly, but she wasn't even close to derp.

What I find interesting about that is there is not a single quote from the Gospels.

Lots of references to the Old Testament, a few to Paul's letters ... but nothing of Jesus' words. Nothing about Matthew 25:31-46. Nothing about Luke 16:18. Nothing about Luke 10:25-37. And definitely nothing about John 18:36.

Does their Christianity have nothing to do with Christ?

I don't find that interesting. I find it entirely predictable. The vengeful, smitey/brimstoney God was primarily the God of the Old Testament

Hippie Jesus does not strike fear into the hearts of people. He also doesn't sell headlines nearly so well.

Who wants to read about loaves and fishes, feeding the needy and healing the sick when you can read about God sending an avenging angel to kill thousands of sinners in one night, eh?

The slide to Derpville can start small. One of my brothers was a Carter fan, served on a Carrier during the Iranian crisis, saw him completely different than we did stateside. Before I actually started researching political things, we differed on the Bush/Gore election, his position being that the great economy was solely due to Gore, and that I didn't have kids so I didn't know anything about the economy. I replied that our loopy sister had 7 kids, so that must mean she was 3.5 times smarter than his two kids made him. He stomped out. In '04, he was a Howard Dean fan, so much so that when Kerry got the nomination, he decided not to vote. Then his daughter got pregnant, and suddenly he was a 1 issue voter. Abortion was evil, and he had now always been pro-life, even though I knew for a fact he had taken at least 2 girlfriends for abortions in his early 20's. Then he started reading those crappy 'Left Behind' novels and gave himself a moral backing for his new beliefs. Then, watching the FAUX News cemented it, especially the Glenn Beck brand of derpity. Now, he freely calls me a 'demoncrat' and will turn the radio off when I get in his car "so your head doesn't explode", like I'M the one who won't listen to opposing views. The last time he got loud about Obama ruining the economy/jobs, I pulled out some printouts of graphs from the CBO and Labor Dept.s, and his response said it all- "I don't care about all those facts, I just know how I FEEL!" And yes, calling CNN the "Communist News Network" is common derp, my former stepmother's current husband in Seattle loves using that term.

"Last night 60,260,360 Americans (?) decided that murder of innocent babies was ok!"

Me: "Uh...if you think that was the only issue that drove people to vote, I've got news for you."

Him: "i am aware there were other issues. I am aware that Romney was a less than stellar choice to elect but i he may have had better ideas for potentially repairing the problems that digging a bigger hole for the next generation."

Me: "So does that mean if you voted for Obama then you're a murderer?"

Him: "it doesn't make you a murderer but it may just mean that people gave consent to abortion being O.K. Just because abortion is a law doesn't make it a good law. God said something about the shedding of innocent blood (on purpose). Voting for it is giving it your approval to it!"

Him: "I think maybe the financial issues in this country stem from the lack of morals on the national level! Your thoughts! The Bible says, Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people."

GObama!!

Uncle

You just wait and see what happens Where_is_your_god_now. Its not gonna be pretty

Where_is_your_god_now

No, it's not going to be pretty... The House Republican majority will put up a fight against getting any sort of meaningful fiscal legislation passed, and it will get nasty. Compromises will get made, so that the legislation that is finally passed doesn't do nearly what it should, and Obama will catch the blame for it.

Not a whole lot is going to change in the political climate from the past 4 years. Obama will continue to incrementally improve the economy, as he has for the last 4 years, and by the end of his last term, maybe we will have finally recovered from the disaster that was the Bush presidency.

Still blaming somebody else. Tell me what bush did to ruin the economy

Where_is_your_god_now

That's a list too long to get into. But it's a very simple point to prove... Look at where the economy was when Bush took office, and look where it was when he left office; He left a big mess to clean up. Sure, there were other factors, and it wasn't JUST Bush, but he was a big contributing factor. Hell, even the republican attack ads I've been seeing for the last several months admitted that Bush left a big mess to clean up. Half of the ads that I saw were to the effect of 'You voted Obama into office in hopes that he would fix the economy after the crash that happened under president Bush, but even though we're back to almost pre-2008 economic levels, he hasn't fixed it fast enough'.

(And yes, I realize that the links below don't prove anything. I'm sure you could find sources that say the exact opposite easily enough. I'm just using them to illustrate my point)

The housing crisis is what took the economy down that was created by the dumocrates trying to help those who could not afford to buy a home all led by barney frank

While I respect your right to your opinion, I disagree with that assessment of the housing crisis. Regardless, the economy has come a long way from 2008, and that's pretty hard to deny. I hope that similar progress is made over the next 4 years, and believe that this country can come together and do it. I also believe that Obama was the right choice to lead us to that end... But, as with all else, only time will tell. President Obama won the election fair and square, as did the republicans who still make up the majority in the house. I hope that both parties can set aside their differences, and do what needs to be done to keep the country on the road to economic recovery.

Thanks, and the same back to you :-). We may not agree on politics, but at least we're both involved, and have an opinion. I know too many people that don't know enough about the issues to even come close to making an educated choice. I was proud of my little sister for taking an interest in this election, and doing the research that she needed to be able to make an informed choice.

I heard the n word being thrown around a lot. However, I live in Harlem and they might have been referring to themselves, not the POTUS.

Silent But Deadly: Silly Jesus: 1. Woman on phone at the grocery store. - "Christ is still the King and he has a plan for us. He will cast his vote."
2. Woman behind me in line to vote. - "Votin' is important. I gots to keep my check a comin'."

Guess who each voted for?

I still can't believe that we still allow ignorant / low information / outright retarded people to vote. Hell, a first grade math test would have likely thrown these two wastes of air out of the process.

What is ignorant or retarded about that? They are voting in their own best interests, however much you might disagree. Seems rather informed to me. I don't agree with it myself, but you did not give a very good example of ignorant or retarded.

I'll concede your point on the second quote...but you don't think that someone basing their vote on their conversations with their imaginary sky wizard is the very definition of ignorant / retarded?

The woman taking everyone else's money actually has the game figured out...so yeah, I retract my previous accusation concerning her.

pedalphile: EdNortonsTwin: Relative: Unemployment climbed to highest levels as soon as Obama took office.

Me: Pulling up Department of Labor graphs shows unemployment climbing during the last several months of Bush's terms, and leveling and slowly dropping under Obama within the first 6 mos.

IMHO I think Fox News brainwashes people, kinda like how infowars does. They just simply stop listening to anything else and let it become dogma.

Hell, my Dad has been a hardcore republican since Reagan, hell one of my brother's middle names is Reagan. But as he's been watching Fox news 24/7 he's been getting much much worse.

I live in Toronto now and all the time while they visited my Dad was pointing out tan people and asking me if they were a modern muslim. No, I think they FARKING ITALIAN OR MAYBE SOME KIND OF SPANIshia

the extra layer of hilarity is that my Dad is "Black Irish" aka "those who tan", his whole life people have doubted that he was Irish (both parents are from Ireland) because "Irish people don't get that dark". He was pulled out of line in Aussie customs because they thought he was Mexican.

We agreed not to talk about politics anymore and I avoid the topic even if my Dad tries to bait me from time to time.

Friend: Well I guess the good news is that the major stroke my dad is probably having right now will be covered by Obamacare.
Friend's Dad: I'd rather go ahead and die.
Friend's Dad: A travesty of eternal proportions. A free people willingly choose a man dedicated to our destruction. I am dumbfounded.

----------
Friend's Dad: I am sick. I am appalled. I am overwhelmed with grief for our country. It kills me to think that America, the city on a hill, the greatest nation in history, has to be destroyed at our own hand as part of the Lord's plan to conclude the history of planet Earth, but it is the only explanation that gives me any solace. This election is just the latest step in a downward spiral that has been going on for decades, but it is a huge one. Electing Romney, while the vastly better choice, would not have meant the end to all our moral, fiscal and other problems, but re-electing Obama is certainly a step further down into the pit. Come Lord Jesus.

----------
Other Friend: To those of you who are disappointed with the election and now ranting that you're "so glad the world will be ending soon"... Stop it. You are entitled to your beliefs, but as a woman pregnant with my first child and due AFTER the world is supposed to explode or whatever, it's upsetting. To be perfectly honest, it actually hurts my feelings. All it sounds like to me is a bunch of stompy footing about your horse not winning, and you'd rather my child have no chance at life than put up with a president you don't like. You will never be happy with everything going on it our government. Neither will I. I didn't like either candidate. Of course I'm worried for my son's future, but (husband) and I will find a way to give him a happy life, government be damned. So please just think before you post, or if you just can't stop yourself, delete me. I'm not putting up with a bunch of people praying for the world to end, because for the first time in years I feel like I really have something to live for.
