Yeah, real cool, submitter. Especially the part where the momma otter is crying in distress over her lost baby.

Whatever. You've seen one video of an otter escaping killer whales by jumping in a boat, you've seen them all.

No argument there. I'm more objecting to the submitter's description of the video.

They cut out the part where they armed her with a speargun and a case of C-4 and watched her go all Charles Bronson on the orcas collective asses.

Damn, nature. You scary.

2012-11-06 03:49:24 PM
By killer whale, you mean orca. Which are actually just big dolphins.

What ever happened to the prime directive? Those fishermen interfered with the natural order of things and now there are some hungry orcas, except for the one who ate the baby otter.

Cool until the whole mom crying for her lost baby thing... then it sucked..

Headline change perhaps?

Clear violation of the Prime Directive.

oh shiat ...that was seriously distressing. Sad as hell...

I hate seeing animals suffering like that. The last way I would describe that video is "coolest".

Nature is one heartless biatch

2012-11-06 04:08:07 PM
Damn. Those whales are scary. I'd push the otter off my boat hoping the whales don't rip my boat apart trying to get her and leave me stranded on a sinking boat in cold water.

Oh cool! A video with cute animals escaping killer whales! (Click) Oooo, cool whales. Wait, 'A mom and a pup'? No! Save the baby otter! NO! Pup eaten! Now she's crying for the lost baby otter? DAMN YOU SUBBY! DAMN YOU TO HELL!

The momma WAS NOT crying over her lost baby. She was calling for it and trying to find it. What? You want her to give up hope.

Neither she nor the viewers have any direct evidence that it got eaten though that is very likely.

Goddamn it....slaps subby hard. Was looking forward to seeing otter saved from killer whales, but instead, saw a poor mother otter calling out for its lunched up on baby. Thanks for the tears.

If FARK would link to the original YouTube, Alaska Killer Whales vs. Witty Otter , rather than some site that rips off and rehosts, then it would be easy to find the related video, Alaska Witty Otter Hit By Killer Whale, Baby Lost in which the guy says "they just took her baby" even though you can't see it in the vid.

from Restoring Liberty:

"The mother otter was floating on her back with her baby on her stomach about twenty-five yards from the boat. The killer whales began to circle the mother and her baby. They did this for some time. The mother otter, with the baby clinging to her stomach, would place her head under water to watch the orcas.

Several times, the whales attempted to bump the baby off and by exhaling underneath her. The mother otter grew increasingly panicked. The exhaling seemed to disorient her.

Finally, a smaller whale swam straight toward the mother otter near the surface of the water and then dove underneath her. It exhaled and then, as you can see just a few seconds into the second video that we just posted today, the killer whale hit her with its tale, flipping her and the baby. This separated the baby from the mother. Presumably, the orca then ate the baby otter under the water"

I have to say that for once my ADD has worked in my favor. Clicked on the link, saw the length of the video, decided to wait until my racing mind was a little more settled to watch and then came into this thread. I hate watching animals, babies or otherwise, getting munched on. Yes, I'm a meat eater, yes it's the circle of life, doesn't mean I want to watch it.

MisterLoki: Killer whales are dicks.

1) Joe Rogan told a story on his podcast about how befroe WWII, orcas would eat X number of humans yearly. a ton. then, during WWII, fighter pilots began using orcas for target practice, at which point "magically" orcas ceased killing human beings. he inferred the orcas got together and had a powwow about, "hey man, quit eating these guys, because they have metal flying machines and are killing us, so knock that shiat off, no more eating humans!"

I wonder why they tried so hard to separate out the baby instead of just mauling them both.

Ambivalence: I wonder why they tried so hard to separate out the baby instead of just mauling them both.

Certain animals prefer prey that they can swallow whole rather than having to somehow divide it into pieces, particularly if they are just playing around and want a snack.

Alligators are so bad at tearing and chewing that they cache big prey underwater until it rots and is easier to eat.

I don't know what species of Orca was shown and how good it is at tearing flesh. I've heard that there are at least 2 species - 1 that mainly swallows fish and another that eats seals.

Otter pup pops!

2012-11-06 08:15:02 PM
She was just calling out in case her baby was still alive. She isn't upset and she'll have more pups. Hell, otters sometimes practice cannibalism and infanticide. She'll be over it in an hour or two.

Too lazy to post it, but the killer whale vs great white is interesting and wild. They're both picking on someone roughly their own size, or at least their own toughness.

So which is it, power or toughness?

/In this case they would not kill each other unless the Whale had taken damage previous to the attack.

Reaching out to touch the otter was incredibly stupid. He's lucky he didn't lose a couple of fingers. Wild animals are not plush toys. I'm surprised he didn't reach down to pet the killer whale.
