Democrats are too stupid lazy to fight voter suppression

FTFY

Are you kidding me? There are unions and other organizations out there that will literally give you a ride to the polls if you need one. That isn't a criticism, by the way, I hope that every eligible voter who wants to vote is able to do so. I'm pretty sure most of the voter ID laws have either been overturned or are still tied up in court. If you don't vote, it's because you couldn't be bothered to. I don't care how poor you are, there ARE people out there who would trip over each other at the chance to get your ass to the polls.

• If the Democratic ticket wins tomorrow, we are going to hear the voter-suppression is a myth and that voter fraud swamped the system. This will begin on the right but will sluice into the mainstream media - "Some people say..." - almost immediately.

I can see this easily happening. Lack of evidence of Dem fraud and ample evidence of GOP suppression will be meaningless.

You can already guarantee that there will be a SLEW of lawsuits in NY state. As soon as Cuomo signed that exec order to allow NYers to vote at any NY polling place, that pretty much opened the door for all the voter fraud paranoids out there to start drawing up legal paperwork. Even thought NY ALWAYS goes blue.

2012-11-06 12:17:21 PM
I saw a guy who worked at the polling station today asking for ID. It pissed me off at first, and so I googled if that was even allowed in NY. It said that they may ask for ID if you aren't already registered in the area. Anyway, I didn't want to get involved in case I was wrong and maybe he had authority to ask....

I guess I was being a bit of a pussy.

I heard something about this... but when I voted this morning we had to vote by district so I waited in of course the longest line... I'm a little confused as to how this works.

Also, did you notice the instructions specifically said "BLACK" pen (in all caps)? 75% of the polling booths I saw gave blue pens. I'm sure it isn't actually a problem, but still. If the election committees can't get THAT right...

I had a FB friend post this today.
"Evie and I went to vote this morning and when we turned the ballot over the back side of my ballot was already filled out. What kind of low-life would do this? I was glad to have my young witness with me but don't want her to think this is what our community and fellow Americans will allow. Check your ballot carefully and make sure each vote is yours."

I also saw this on utube

spineless is the word you're looking for subby.

I keep seeing "liberals" and democrats on fark talking about how they will agree to voter ID laws if you just give these spineless wimps some time to prepare. When the proper response to republicans would be f*ck off with your voter id today, f*ck off with your voter id tomorrow and f*ck off with your voter id 50 years from now.

nekom: I'm pretty sure most of the voter ID laws have either been overturned or are still tied up in court.

It's not just about the ID laws, of course -- a lot of voter suppression is extra-legal. Aggressive poll "monitors", untraceable misinformation campaigns, questionable provisioning and maintenance of voting machines (including last-minute software changes, for the electronic ones), unaccountable restriction of voting hours. I'm confident that we shall overcome, but there's a lot of downright treason going on out there.

/Not to mention the blatant gerrymandering of districts.

It would appear the article does not match the headline.

2012-11-06 01:02:44 PM
The entire process of voting is set up to maximize voter suppression as it is.

I can fill out my taxes online, both state and federal, at my leisure and submit them anytime before the due date. No ID, no questions, no fuss, just some basic log-in and confirmation numbers.

Filing false tax returns is a more serious crime than false voting; it actually MATTERS a lot more in that it's real money, but somehow it is a billion times easier to actually file your tax returns than it is to vote.

Why? Because the government wants your money, but doesn't want you to vote.

I think the video was posted here last week, but to be honest I don't really care. There are too many other larger problems in Ohio to worry about.

>> Democrats are too stupid to fight voter suppression

- Charles P. Pierce is too stupid to believe a story about Morning Joe on voter suppression is worthy of the electrons that dance around the screen so we see the page on our monitors.

- A lot of America is too stupid to understand that Esquire is scraping the bottom of the barrel to find stories that titillate readers and that they then can report to their advertisers so they can get paid.

Worthless article about something that may or may not happen. Then again, with articles like this, it is possible that somebody will cry loud enough to make it happen whether the issue has merit or not.

I should amend what I posted.....suppression does happen. There are examples of it that have been going on for months now and this is just this election cycle. Witness yet again (always worth a re-link) our good friend PA House Republican Leader Mike Turzai once again. And he is just the tip of the iceberg.

My issue with this article is not that suppression takes place, but this idiot from Esquire decided he was going to use Morning Joe as an example of whatever outrage he is derping about.

And it is not even a good derp.

most of the elite political journalists, even the very most liberal ones, decline to wrap their minds around that there are obviously better ways to run the logistics of a national election than the way we do it here in The World's Greatest Democracy.

Because requiring an ID is just like Jim Crow laws.

The voter fraud is worse on the Dem side.
The voter suppression is worse on the Repub side.

Both sides do both.

Yet all you Libs think you are morally superior because of your ridiculous preconceived notion that Republican = Evil and Democrat = Good.

Yeah, I am a Republican, but at least I am farking smart enough to recognize that this crap is happening from both sides.

Fair enough, but there's a small (not that that makes it ok) bit of that going on on both sides, and there's little to be done about your odd poll worker giving someone a hard time. And one call to the ACLU hotline and they'll get a nastygram from an attorney enough to scare them into backing down. The resources ARE out there, nobody really has any excuse for not voting, so long as they are legally eligible to do so. Anyone who tries to prevent that SHOULD be arrested, but let's be honest, a small degree of that is just going to happen nationwide, across the board. People are people, and as such are sometimes asshats.

Voter ID laws aren't voter suppression. They're the opposite of that. They're needed to make elections more fair and transparent. Get a clue moron.

Slutter McGee: The voter fraud is worse on the Dem side. The voter suppression is worse on the Repub side.

Democrats - historically guilty of fraudulent registration, ballot box stuffing, etc. Accusations are thrown around with abandon (ACORN!!!) but the provable instances of this behavior benefiting Democrats in recent years are practically nil. It's terrible that they're still doing it at all, but they really suck at it.

Republicans - much more competent, and fighting this fight on many fronts:
- Gerrymandering (not a Republican invention, of course, but they're the ones doing most of the shameless gerrmandering at the moment)
- Destroying registration forms of people registering Democrat
- Suppression: Voter ID laws, other miscellaneous hoops to jump through that are designed to target Democratic voters at a higher rate than Republican voters. In many ways, the second coming of Jim Crow (if he ever indeed left.)
- Influence over voting machine manufacturing, maintenance, and provisioning (nothing concretely proven here but some statistically suspicious outcomes, especially in Florida and Ohio. The fact that with many new machines this sort of fraud CANNOT be proven or disproven is especially worrisome.)
- Misinformation/scare tactics (wrong voting date on Spanish language forms, robocalls with wrong location, threatening billboards in minority areas.)
- Vote suppression in the US SENATE, aka the eternal filibuster.
- And lest we forget Citizens United, which in my mind is nothing but Supreme Court approved election fraud.
