BafflerMeal: Can someone explain to me (aside from lowest bid government work) why voting machine touch screens need to be 'calibrated'? People speak as if this is a known thing, but I haven't had to calibrate even a consumer level device's touch screen since the Palm devices and the ATMs, movie ticket vending machines, etc... that are everywhere just seem to 'work'.

Are these just really crappy machines or is there some other reason people accept this? I'm a technologist, and the head-nodding around this issue really bothers me.

The county I live in doesn't even use them.. Or didn't have enough for the whole county.. Good ol' color in the circle ballot for me. They did have one machine there that was electronic and the woman running the election place asked me to use it.. Inserted my ballot and it couldn't read it.. It crushed her dreams pretty hard when it didn't work, lol.

Corvus: Marine1: No shiat. Maybe if guys like you stopped saying "HURR, YER THROWIN' AWAY YER VOTE THERE, CLEETUS" whenever we actually speak our minds on a ballot, we wouldn't have to choose between two mediocre candidates every four years.

You make it sound like third party candidates are some how magically better. Many Libertarians are ex-GOP people. Did switching the R to an L magically make them better candidates?

I switched from R to L primarily because I changed my mind on gay marriage, abortion, and any other policies that control people's lives.

Now I am an Independent because saying "the free market will cure all ills" is just as silly as "because Jesus!" and "The government will take care of you!".

My beliefs go all over the map depending on issue.

robohobo: Mitt Romneys Tax Return: Corvus: Serious what the hell is up with polling places in other states. In CA, i've lived in BFE, suburbs and the city and each of those at most i've waited 15 mins but usually like 5 mins.

What's wrong with these places that have hour long lines?

Voter supression.

Make it hard enough to vote in minority and inner-city neighborhoods and people won't bother to go to the pools.

Black people don't swim, anyway.

Well, if you can't spell at least make your typos entertaining.

PonceAlyosha: llachlan: LGBTQ (did I forget a letter?) rights will stall in the legal sense under Romney,

They won't stall, they'll regress.

Thing is, it is very hard to take rights away once given - California's voters found that out. Singling out a group to remove something you already gave them is something you are actually protected from. You also have enough states, cities and corporations that no longer give a damn who marries who, that you can't put the genie back in the bottle. And once your government realizes, the way ours did, that you will get more tax revenue letting people file as married, you'll have won :)

Also, you have a new fight that is about to knock the gay rights fight off of the front pages -- legalizing the much vilified gateway drug* that is pot (and hopefully saving you guys a fortune in wasted enforcement). While that fight takes center stage, we get to live our lives and the people around us get to see we are just people, and not the boogey man. Hunh, maybe I do watch too much MLP:FiM (only 4 more days!)

Report minority "voter fraud" to True The Vote at 855-444-6100, or by going to http://www.truethevote.org/incident-report/

Please don't report false information and send them to distant, rural counties in Ohio and Florida. That would tie up all sorts of resources that would otherwise be used for voter suppressi - I mean, uh, election validification.

Skarekrough: Brain_Damage: I have to stop at the grocery store on the way home from work and need help deciding what dinner would be suitable for watching the Republican melt down on Fox/Freeperville/etc. Suggestions?

I'm making nachos for the late-night returns snack.

Considering the stance on immigration the ethnic slant of the dish seems appropriate.

It will be washed down with a Russian Imperial Stout....the favored beer of our biggest foe.

And, of course, were ordering Chinese for dinner.

I like the nacho and beer angle. Maybe I can work in some arugula for shiats and giggles.

llachlan: Call me naive, but your Supreme Court has pretty much done the right thing on the big issues, irrespective of who sits on the bench. So there's that.

That doesn't mean it always will, especially if the balance is shifted significantly (and there are four Justices over age 70). The worst civil rights abuses in American history - with possibly the sole exception of Japanese internment - have all been sanctioned by the Supreme Court. The Court may get it right, eventually, but it took them almost 100 years to undo "separate but equal".

Weaver95: it just floors me that there isn't any Romney ground crew out in Pa today. no local GOP ground pounders either for that matter.

I'm out by Pittsburgh and we had one ground pounder outside my polling place. Polite little lady handing out yellow sheets that checklisted the republicans you could vote for. I took one out of curiosity and was sad that it was very reasonable and forgettable. Also, Keith Rothfus is an assbag.

I had more fun with the dude behind me that was about to go nuclear over them asking for ID. In fairness to the polling place, they were being 100% polite and reasonable about asking for ID and then making assurances that it was not required. Still bullshiat, but they were doing okay. No problems with the machines by me.

If you are in MA remember to vote for medical marijuana and the die with dignity law. I heard a story on NPR the other day about how the medical law was pretty much a shoe in but the die with dignity law was a toss up and I was thinking it was odd that you have people who support medical pot but don't support die with dignity law.

I"ve lost FB friends, not spoken to relatives, and have seen far too much derp on my TV.
I've been lurking here since just before the 2008 election, and I've been here pretty much every night until 3:00AM since the GOP primaries. You've kept me sane. I finally decided to join but it took a while because of the verbal beatdown I feared I might get, but now I think I can take it. I just wanted to say that I was here, when the walls fell. I'll post something more useless later, I've got way to much crow to prepare right now.

Voted in Sarpy County, Nebraska. No lines. They use a scantron sheet, so it's fill in the bubble. Election and campaign signs are prohibited w/in 200 ft. from the polling place, so there were tons of signs along the road, but none near the site itself, nor anyone with clipboards or pamphlets.

I ended up voting Gary Johnson. I figure if the Libertarians do manage to get that 5%, it'll scare the Republicans enough for them to do some self-reflection as a party.

That aside, having electronic polling stations staffed by the elderly is just madness.

If more non-elderly people showed interest in volunteering as poll workers, maybe the elderly ones could kick back and rest. In the meantime, they're the generation that was raised to take the concept of "civic duty" seriously and they've got more experience in having their lives affected by who gets voted into various offices.
