I'm lucky to have a lot of libertarian candidates running for other offices that I don't mind voting dem for the prez and libertarian for the rest.

Brain_Damage: I have to stop at the grocery store on the way home from work and need help deciding what dinner would be suitable for watching the Republican melt down on Fox/Freeperville/etc. Suggestions?

I'm making nachos for the late-night returns snack.

Considering the stance on immigration the ethnic slant of the dish seems appropriate.

It will be washed down with a Russian Imperial Stout....the favored beer of our biggest foe.

And, of course, were ordering Chinese for dinner.

JohnnyC: zappaisfrank: JohnnyC: With any luck... today we repeal the Emergency Manager bullshiat that Snyder did here in Michigan. Proposal 1 here in Michigan is essentially, "Do you want the Governor to keep undermining Democracy?"

I voted this morning and voted NO on all the proposals except the two collective bargaining ones.

Fark Snyder..I want him neutered so his last two years are nothing but exercises in floundering.

Why did you vote no against the Renewable energy requirement increase? I'm voting: 1:N, 2:Y, 3:Y, 4:Y, 5:N, 6:N on our proposals.

Michigander here, and I voted the same as you on the proposals. Also, +1 for the black guy.

mediablitz: Maybe if guys like you stopped trying to be trendy by voting for the "cool" 3rd party candidate who is just another failed Republican that switched to "Libertarian" and you fell for that shiat, we could get somewhere on REAL 3rd party reform.

Rocky Anderson. Jill Stein. None of you desperate to prove how cool you are "I'm third party!" farks ever mention anyone but Gary "I'll say whatever I need to now that the Libertarians will take me" Johnson.

You are WORSE than those voting for the two parties. You are willfully ignorant in the name of being "cool".

T.J. O'Hara. Modern Whig party. Awesome stances, doesn't stand a snowball's chance in this election. Voting Obama because the danger of having Romney in outweighs the infinitesimal possibility that O'hara gets even 5% of the vote.

No issues voting here in Clark County, NV. Only had to dodge one guy with a clipboard outside... I just shook my head and said "dude, I'm not changing my mind at this point!" No idea who or what he was for, don't care, I just like to be left alone. Everybody inside was friendly and pretty organized. I'm happy to have a new polling place this time around since I moved, my old location was in a church that gave me the heebie jeebies.

star_topology:
In all seriousness, when Johnson's campaign as a Republican crashed and burned, why did he go Independent/Libertarian? Out of spite? Out of necessity? Why would you vote for someone who isn't interested in building a viable third party from the ground up?

I may be answering my own question here, but did he run as a Republican to get his name out there because no one would know who he was otherwise if he ran Independent/Libertarian from the get-go?

Necessity plays a big role, I think. You need a party with national recognition to get on ballots (and for funding purposes), so building that party from the ground up is extremely hard unless one picks up the mantle from someone like Nader. But even the Green party in 96 and 2000 didn't get to the 5% popular vote needed for federal funding in the next election.

Ross Perot may have seriously screwed third party politics for a while by not turning the Reform Party into something other than the party of Ross Perot. They had the popular votes for funding. After that, Democrats and Republicans learned not to invite other guys to the party (read: debates) anymore.

BgJonson79: Isn't that just making the 1% richer?

My barber's argument was that we should vote for Romney because Obama failed to improve the economy, and Romney will . . . you know, increase the stock market and create jobs . . .

It wasn't a coherent thought process.

BafflerMeal: Are these just really crappy machines or is there some other reason people accept this? I'm a technologist, and the head-nodding around this issue really bothers me.

i've used an atm that was out of whack - it quadrupled the amount of money i wanted withdrawn, and 'no' slid down to 'yes' on the confirmation screen.

not to say that it isn't...erm...troubling when it happens with voting machines, but it's not like ATMs sit in a warehouse for 360 days a year not being used - they aren't moved/transported to the area of use, further jarring them, either.

2012-11-06 01:03:25 PM

BafflerMeal: Can someone explain to me (aside from lowest bid government work) why voting machine touch screens need to be 'calibrated'? People speak as if this is a known thing, but I haven't had to calibrate even a consumer level device's touch screen since the Palm devices and the ATMs, movie ticket vending machines, etc... that are everywhere just seem to 'work'.

Are these just really crappy machines or is there some other reason people accept this? I'm a technologist, and the head-nodding around this issue really bothers me.

Obvious. Some machines are supposed to report results that are 100% the same regardless of which button you push, and some are not. Ohio needs to ensure that these same-reporting machines are "calibrated" (i.e. deployed in the right place with the correct illegal software) before the big vote.

crappy resistive touch screens. When they were developed in the mid-2k's, Capacitive touch screens like the iPad has were very expensive.

So vote Republican?

You know, i'll go ahead and bite, even though i know yous trollin' if only to expand the message...

No... The idea is to stop pretending the president is the all-powerful wizard and start replacing the parts that matter... you want libertarians in the whitehouse, make sure the libertarian has some support... Get at least 33% in the house and the senate...

The president isn't Rambo, he can't take on the house and the senate by himself, they will chew him up and eat him alive... and thehistory books would show a 3rd party president without support of 3rd party support to be the most ineffective president in history...

Right now, when it comes to the president, either vote against the party you hate the most, or don't vote president, focus your attention, money, and campaigning where it truly matters: congress
