No one has any idea what disaster relief is. They make it up and complain when the President doesn't personally talk to them and they don't get Red Cross trucks giving out free food and water the next day and why isn't FEMA all over the place and such. Then they think this is just like Katrina.

Katrina was a clusterfark beyond comprehension. This time it's pretty well-run. Not fantastic, but well run. I have a friend in FEMA. They are doing an absolutely insane amount of work here. Some folks just need patience, some folks really need help and yes, sometimes there's a gap and shame on everyone, etc, etc, but no large disaster is immune from that. Without FEMA, it's not like others would pick up the slack. FEMA cannot be replaced by anything except itself. The idea is to have them do their job properly.

lol. Worse then Katrina?

Are there STILL people stuck on the roofs of their houses while flood water surround them?

no?

Then it's not worse then Katrina.

Diogenes: Rudy could have left a decent legacy for himself if he had kept his mouth shut after leaving office.

Jackpot

Unlike our grandparents who took part in the Big One and went on to age in dementia, Rudy will be remembered solely for his dementia.

Eh, not likely...

I think we can all agree that whatever Obama does is wrong. If he'd stood outside New Jersey with a staff in hand and parted the waters like Moses in The Ten Commandments, he'd be lambasted for interfering with divine wrath.

The federal governments response to any disaster will always be terrible. Its just the way it is.

They are not equipped to move as quick as victims think they should. If in 2 weeks you have received no aid, then you should complain, first 2 weeks are on you to provide for yourself.

Shvetz: Diogenes: Yes, Rudy. Please tell us about poor handling of emergencies. You should know something about it through your own glaring failures at it. Chief among them, relocating the emergency response command center in the World Trade Center in 1997, even though your director of emergency management recommended that you not put it there because it had been a target in 1993.

As a New Yorker, I have to agree. Nobody wanted to crap on Rudy at the time, but he had a number of security failures in regards to 9/11. His expert advisers told him one thing, and he decided to go a different direction. His legacy was fine though, and he shouldn't have poked at it. He became a Republican shill, and now the rose-colored glasses are coming off.

The fact that Bush didn't jump up out of his seat, tell everyone, pull out his ivory revolvers and point them towards Mecca was a sign of weakness.

The fact that he sat there with a dumb look on his face, and then went back to reading a children's book made him look like an idiot. Made it look like our country was run by an idiot. Made America look like idiots. He didn't have to turn into Captain Texas and charge into battle, but it would've been nice if he did something.

vudukungfu: hey, I got stuck in traffic this morning behind a car wtih VT plates that read [FLY 911] and I still can't figure out if they were vanity plates, or just plane (sic) issued that way.

Probably issued that way. VT plates increment the numbers up to 999, then increment the rightmost letter, carrying to the second letter when the rightmost rolls over from Z (i.e. AAA 999 -> AAB 000, AAZ 999 -> ABA 000, AZZ 999 -> BAA 000, and so on). They're currently issuing the later Fxx plates (I've seen FTN on the road), so that plate was probably issued in late 2010 or early 2011.

True, but unlike the other hacks, Giuliani stands a good chance of catching some "zombie apocalypse" type justice if he keeps running his mouth and sets foot back in NYC. As they enter another night of dark, cold, hungry discomfort, they are going to start wondering why Rudy is on TV bad mouthing the people bringing in help instead of stepping up and helping to raise money.

Another troll from the guy who forced the location of the emergency command center into Manhattan from Brooklyn, which was a far more logical place a terrorist attack would not have taken place. The relocated place had experienced an attack less than a decade earlier.

And this is not even beginning to discuss that little radio problem.

Which was not what the person you responded to was proposing. Do you not understand the concept of a measured response, where Bush could have, as in the example, politely have excused himself to go off and do presidential things, and the total lack of response he exhibited instead?

hammettman: Katrina: Not Bush's problem. Not the federal government's problem, except that, okay, it was. But the state didn't fill out the right paperwork, so not Bush's problem. Oh, turns out that paperwork was not even necessary? Federal government by default is the lead responder in an incident of national significance. FEMA is bad, look at the morons running it. Why are you facepalming?

He's a Yale legacy, clearly a NE upperclass twit. How does that contradict the meat of the statement? Should "'Scuse me, kids, I got some presidentin' to do" have been written in Charles Emerson Winchester 3 voice? Given Bush's habit of pretending to be Texan, I think not.

Louisiana has a long and storied history of keeping the feds out at all costs, mostly a remnant of reconstruction, but either way they're basically America's Greece. That they would fail to meaningfully cooperate with federal intervention and for sure wouldn't coordinate in advance isn't exactly surprising. Note that Katrina itself wasn't unprecedented, New Orleans has been put underwater something like four times in the last century because they continually block federal efforts to bring the levee system up to code on general principle (the principle being "fark the feds").

Basically "didn't fill out the paperwork" is probably a nice way of saying "actively obstructed our efforts at every turn". So to an extent I'd believe FEMA's explanation for why their response was a couple days slower than usual.

//If you're thinking "no, why would anyone do that? That's stupid, you're stupid!" Then congratulations on never having lived in or had family in Louisiana. No, seriously, good job, you should keep that up, it's a terrible place.

Latinwolf: jvl: thurstonxhowell: jvl: All Presidents get blamed for insufficient disaster relief after major natural disasters. Looks to me like Obama is going to get lucky though and the unfair blame will mostly occur after the election.

All presidents get blamed for insufficient disaster relief when their is insufficient disaster relief. The response to Sandy has been a study in how to do it right.

It's bit early to judge. Katrina was more obvious one week in due to the people left in the Superdome. Also, the fact that Bush had a moron in charge of FEMA. I imagine when the subways still don't work in a month, people will blame the Army Corp (and Obama) for being unprepared even though that's obviously New York's responsibility to be prepared for.

Most of the subways are up and running, the only lines still not working are parts of the R and L trains.

And the G (if that counts as a train)
