Was he just that bad? The guy had only 1 and a half seasons as head coach. Normally, you'd want to give a college coach at least 3 years to see if his recruits work out or not.

Does anyone really think that UK fans care about the football team? We'll cheer for them, but we never expect them to win.

THIS. I can understand being butthurt about Vandy and Mizzou stomping them, but what UK football fan (I've been told they exist, anyway; like God and American exceptionalism, I just politely nod when I hear about people who believe they exist) really thinks the team could keep up with the NFL training camps that are Alabama, LSU, Florida et al, especially while having a basketball program that no other college in the nation can come close to? For decades the football program serves as a living advent calendar to let fans know how far away basketball season is. Good luck finding a coach who'll want this gig for any longer than 3 years.

I'm surprised that Auburn's coach hasn't been run out of town on a rail yet. Of course, after last weekend's domination of New Mexico State maybe Chizik will last. But I doubt it.

Maybe Cam Newton really was that good.

I think it was two seasons, plus this partial season, according to the Courier-Journal.

And I'd be willing to argue that being 1-9 this season, 12-23 overall, losing eight straight games, and being beat 40-0 by a team that was 4-4 going into game justifies a change,

At least I got to see them trounce Kent State after a very scary first half.

This was his third year. Plus, he was offensive coordinator under the previous head coach. But, to answer your question, yes, he was that bad.

We exist. I don't expect SEC Championships or anything of the like. However, I do expect to be at least competitive in some of our games and not lose to Western Kentucky at home. Joker Phillips is a great guy from what I can tell, but he's not working out as a coach. People forget, we beat LSU the year they were national champions, and under Rich Brooks, UK Fans at least had some hope that we would win. That's gone now. Not to mention, you're not going to keep your job when less than 20,000 people show up to a game. Rupp holds more than enough for the people at the Vandy game Saturday.

Yes and no. Some people will claim to not care, but towards the end of the Rich Brooks era, it seemed like more and more people cared. There's not the history that a lot of the SEC schools have, but I think it is a sport a vast majority would love to see some measure of success at.

no. Neither college team we have is worth noting and we as a state don't really have an NFL allegiance.

I misread the article originally. If this is his 3rd year then he should be gone because this is the year that his recruits should be taking over.

If I understand your perspective it is that Kentucky football has been so mediocre for so long, that if they actually started to win for awhile, people would pay attention.

Oh yeah, if UK even broke even for the season you'd see a HUGE influx of audience.

r/atheism is just a few keystrokes away. Go be the pivot man for the internet's biggest circle jerk.

No, I'm cool with people believing what they want to believe.

I just have a problem with the AD putting religion into the firing statement, as if God told him that it was OK. I'm not "outraged", and I agree with you that r/atheism is indeed the biggest circle jerk on the internet. Feel better now?

No, we don't. Only the idiots in the fan base want him fired. Every other UK sport is thriving under Barnhart's watch. Sure, in hindsight, Gillespie was a bad hire, but EVERYONE thought it was a great hire. And Phillips got the job at the urging of Brooks because other high profile schools wanted to hire him away to be their OC.

The problem with UK is that y'all focus on basketball and nothing else. Then when your football HC doesn't win jack shiat, your AD holds a press conference and says he prayed about it. Your AD set Joker up to fail, plain and simple.

Bear Mother Farking Bryant couldn't succeed at Kentucky. He won the SEC and got a watch and a pat on the back from that asswipe Adolph Rupp. They just will never be a football school, and it's always going to be a fight to be a football coach there.

I had an epiphany earlier this year, and it's served me well. I quit paying attention to Kentucky football. Nothing against them, really- I just see no need to let that program have any more sway over my emotions. My Saturdays have become much more enjoyable since.

It helps that my alma mater still has that "new car" smell, and cheering for a team with zero expectations is liberating.

Lol. No one set up Joker to fail. Joker took over a program that was at least semi-respectable that he was the main recruiter and the oc of. Joker failed on his own.

FYI The Bear Bryant story isn't true. But you're right on one count, UK will not be a football school without a change in the fan base.

Really? That's all you have?

UK football has been an absolute doormat (meaning everyone has wiped their feet on them) in the SEC since forever. Know why? Because UK doesn't care about football. All y'all do is wait around for November to kick ass in basketball. The athletic department couldn't care less about football.

There is a passionate fanbase for football at UK (ranked in the top 25 for attendance up until 2010) The administration has never EVER put the commitment or resources into trying to make the program successful, but instead have treated it like a cash cow.

Actually, I think everyone is expecting him to be out at the end. You don't struggle against Troy and expect to keep your job. I think he's actually a decent recruiter, but the players make way too many correctable mistakes. That's just a sign of a poorly coached team. And the defense is the worst I've seen on a TN team in a while. Not that I know who they would replace him with, though. So much is still being paid out to ex coaches and assistants.
