priapus54: I enlisted at 17 and retired as an E-7 at 37 after 20 years of 24/7 service, 365 days a year. That's about 60+ years of employment based on an eight hour work day for most civilians have . . . I can't speak for civil service, but if the military's retirement system was such a sweet deal, why doesn't everyone stay in and collect those big bucks?

I enlisted at 17 and left as an E-6 at 22 after 4 years.
I served because the military needs good people to serve and leave.
I didn't stay in and collect those big bucks because lifers are assholes.

A little late to the party, but here's my take:

Retired generals, admirals are free to participate in the political process.

Any military officer will tell you that to obtain a rank above Colonel, it involves "politics."

Rear Admiral Don "Smoke" Hickman, (USN-ret)
Admiral Robert J. "Barney" Kelly, (USN-ret)
Vice Admiral John B. "Bat" Laplante, (USN-ret)
Admiral James A. "Ace" Lyons, Jr., (USN-ret)
Lieutenant General Fred "Assassin" McCorkle, (USMC-ret)
Rear Admiral W.W. "Bear" Pickavance, (USN-ret)
Admiral Leighton "Snuffy" Smith, Jr., (USN-ret)
Brigadier General David M. "Tanker" Snyder, (USAF-ret)

Retired pilots who use their call-sign nicknames to sign a presidential petition are probably not guys who take it all that seriously.

coeyagi: Guys, you're doing it wrong. By getting Obama voted out of office, you don't get to retroactively rewrite the history books to say you didn't work for a black man from 1/20/2009 - 1/20/2013.

I was at a USAF function in the early 90s with Sec Def Les Aspin, AF Chief of Staff General McPeak, and Chairman Gen Colin Powell. Mostly White crowd. Largest applause by far was for Powell.

Would you also say that anyone who didn't vote for our president in 2008 is racist?
