thats nothing....
my bro in law just called me and told me out on long island the idiots are trying to fill garbage bags with gas. not to mention the ones smoking as they are filling up.

this gross stupidity is only after 7 days. imagine if it was like a month. people would be eating their kids

Orange? That's about an hour over the border. Why drive so far into Connecticut?

Something suspicious about this...

Why isn't the Obama administration calling this a terrorist act? Why haven't they issued any statement at all on this?

2012-11-05 02:29:25 PM
So the crime was the buckets weren't Department of Transportation approved. Is it actually a crime to buy a methload of gasoline?

2012-11-05 02:29:48 PM
I was in Westchester County and New Jersey for a couple of days last week.

We had a red 5 gallon gas can and people were begging to buy it from us.

"I don't care about the gas, empty it in your tank. I just want the can!"

It's been a mess. Mile-long lines of parked cars fanning out from every open gas station. I haven't heard about the garbage bags though, that's crazy.

2012-11-05 02:29:57 PM
You'd probably pass out from the fumes before you got to the end of the block. Plus you know someone who does something that stupid would be a smoker.

When we had the Gas shortages in Atlanta I filled up a 6 gallon can when I topped up my hybrid (My wife was getting pretty low and she visits clients) and figured I'd get hassled. I was all ready for the 'I'm getting less gas than most people here' line ready to go and didn't even need it.

What I don't understand is how we can go through something like this, where we can see what Americans are reduced to because our society is so dependent on gas, and not want to change it at all.

I can only imagine...

He's driving down the road, hits a bump, and a bucket falls over. Sloshing around, the lid comes loose just as he tries to light a cig. Oh, it would be a beautiful sight, like a comet shooting down the expressway.

Technically a cigarette isn't hot enough to light gasoline, all those movies you've seen lied to you.

Just start arresting everyone who is trying to bring gas into new york. That will fix everything.

My brother and sister-in-law live within walking distance of their kids' school and the train. Otherwise I don't know how they'd survive/get to and from the city.

However I don't know if their school has been opened yet. But the SIL went back into NYC today since the storm to reopen her studio.

Before you get your smug on, realize that mass transit is also down, and hybrids/electrics have no means of charging, either.

Yeah, if only everyone drove electric cars we'd be in the clear. Unless there were widespread power outages of course, but what are the odds of that?

What about the butane flame on the lighter or the spark from the lighter's igniter? Is that hot enought to ignite gasoline vapors?

But I think it can light the fumes with little effort.

For those that are in the gas lines, do they have multiple grades, or is it all regular? I need 91/93, so i just have kept my car at home instead of risking it. just curious.

Your point being that he needed to get the buckets at Home Depot? Well, there are at least 53 Home Depots in Connecticut closer to Queens than the one in Orange.

What do you have to say to that?

/No you look at the bucket.

We actually had a tanker truck from some charity pull up in my town a couple of days ago to give out free gas for people's generators.

As soon as word got out they were giving out 5 gallons of free gas, everyone and their brother jumped on line with whatever they could find to hold gas. (most of whom obviously didn't have a generator, seeing as you would own a real gas can if you did).

So to avoid a riot they just started filling up whatever. And naturally someone then spilled a 5 gallon water jug of gas in their house, and the fire department put an end to the mess. It was pretty damn funny to watch the whole thing play out.

No the mass transit is not down. It is affected, and one subway line is still completely closed, but it's mostly working.

And electric vehicles can be recharged by solar panels, though of course most people don't have them.

I had that fight with a number of customers when I worked at a gas station. The best were the ones who called the cops because I wouldn't turn their pump back on.

Actually those painter's buckets seal TIGHT. No vapor leaks. And static discharge cannot happen spontaneously in a container.

A gas container will always pressurize once closed, but will reach an equilibrium based on temperature. It seems unlikely that this would exceed the pressure capacity of the lid. The lid's surface area is large, but they seal with a lot of force, and containing volatiles like paint thinner is probably on their list of intended uses.

If you get in an accident, yeah, you're gonna have a bad time. DIAF. But it's the next best thing if you can't buy a proper jerry can anymore (they're all sold out for hundreds of miles).  If this were a pickup with the front separated from the back, and the were packed in so the couldn't move, it'd be a lot more sound plan, though.
