Most of our ancestors have had to endure terrible things at one point or another. See: Europe and the various groups that raped and pillaged through Europe (particularly the Romans) and Asia (see: Mongols). New people and new religions are brought in, forcefully, and the native peoples (like the people of England by the Romans) find their old culture is lost and have to adapt to a new culture. (see: Christianity pretty much everywhere it goes. Islam as well.) The biggest differences are that the nation that has destroyed them is starting to have a change of heart and the time scale - the nation still exists to criticize.

Eventually we all have to get over the past and start working toward the future, because like it or not, there's no going back to the past.

There are two kinds of first nations types, and I think this distinction usually supersedes actual tribal affiliation:

Type 1 is highly offended at white man's disrespect of their ancient and respectable culture.

Type 2 doesn't think their culture is all that ancient or respectable, and finds the white people thinking that hilarious.

It's always seemed strange to me that both the Native Americans and Jews endured genocide, yet the Jews are looked at as brave survivors and the Native Americans as pussies. It makes me lean toward believing the whole racism against brown people thing. Americans know more about what Hitler did to the Jews than what their ancestors helped do to the Native Americans. it isn't any different. It is just as horrific and terrible. The fact that the government STILL will not honor land contracts is ridiculous as well. The Natives are still caught up in legal battles that have lasted since before your great grandmother lost her virginity. Yet we send tons of weapons and money to Israel every farking day.

And, adding insult to injury, sports team names with 'injun' slang. I mean, if there were Alabama Rednecks, California Wetbacks, and Missouri Darkies, the amount of outrage would be huge

The only thing they ever had going for them was Gwen's "fark me daddy" baby voice. Their music was always middle-of-the-road and bland. They are known more for bad covers (and subtle remakes) of other musicians' songs than their own paint-by-numbers tunes.

Gwen's cute, though, when in the right lighting.

I look at No Doubt like I look at Smashing Pumpkins-- "Alternative" music for people who don't like alternative music.
