There must be some psychology behind the theory that republicans will be more likely to vote if they "know" they are going to win versus if they might lose or it is a close race. The right wing media has been pushing the narrative that Romney is going to win big for a couple months.

Funny question - Assume Mitt Romney is going to be POTUS, how does that make you feel? Think about it. If you have listened to Mitt as a candidate, everyone in the United States should be simultaneously scared and excited because the directions Mitt might take the country are endless. He might appoint justices that ban abortion entirely, or he might appoint justices that are pro-choice. He might lower our taxes, or he might raise them. Maybe he'll invest heavily in green energy and enact powerful environmental regulations a-la his 2004 "THE NEED FOR ACTION IS NOW" stance, or maybe he'll cut funding entirely and disband the EPA.

Whatever side you're on, if Mitt becomes POTUS, all things are possible -- your nightmare scenario, your dream scenario and everything in between. So how do I feel about Mitt as POTUS? I dunno.

Take an empty gallon paint can and put about a cup of water in it. heat is up on a grill or something so the water starts to boil, let it sit for a few minutes boiling off almost all the water, then (carefully) quickly put the lid on it and seal it shut. Spray the hot paint can containing only water vapor with the water hose. The vapor condenses back to water leaving a vacum inside the can which will be quickly crushed by the much higher pressure outside the can. *bam* implosion.

/there's got to be a gazillion youtube videos of this, it's a pretty standard science fair project.

Reduce the air pressure inside the can in relation to the outside air pressure until the container walls can no longer take it. Duh.

To go a little further, in this particular instance they are likely referring to The Belief Disconfirmation Paradigm, which is where someone has a belief, (Obama is bad preznit, democracy is good gubbmint, Obama will lose) and is faced with evidence to the contrary (Obama is winning) and must either change their beliefs (Democracy is bad because people reelected the Ni-BONG and/or Obama isn't that bad) or deny the evidence. Otherwise they have the uncomfortable problem of two very conflicting beliefs that they are aware are in conflict.

2012-11-05 11:26:51 AM
The fact of the matter is that every vote counts. It is a message sent to those who refuse to hear our voices, because they believe we don't matter -- unless, of course, we agree with them.

Just because they will not listen does not mean we should not speak.

Ummmm, if the only reason you're voting is to send a message (because your voting for a republican in NY), but that message doesn't not arrive at its destination - they doesn't that mean that your vote DIDN'T count?

And cry me a farking river about how your vote in NY doesn't count. After the Reconstruction ended, South Carolina went to the democrats -every- *single* -election- up until Johnson signed the Civil Rights act in 1964. Since then we've gone to republicans every year.

We only had two outliers, 1976 when we voted for the peanut farmer from next door, and 1946, when we voted for the Strom Thurmond, who ran on a re-segregate the US Army platform.

These are the minimum scenarios.

To win, Obama needs Colorado and New Hampshire, or Virginia, or Ohio, or Florida.

To win, Romney needs Virginia and Ohio and Florida and Colorado or New Hampshire.

Yeah, I've heard them say this, too. Psychology gives me a headache.

So, I'm married to a psychologist, as is the prof. who was my thesis adviser. I asked him if he thought that us computer scientists married psychologists because of the whole left-brain right-brain thing and our general inability to understand why people do the things they do. "No," he said, "psych majors are the best looking girls in grad school." He's right about that, too.

Personally, I think that by Wednesday the Freepers, et. al, will be screaming voter fraud. And two years from now they'll completely forget how wrong all their polls were and they'll predict a major comeback for the party of derpdom.

That was the progressive master plan -- that, and portraying Mitt Romney as a Dickensian villain intent on destroying the nation in service of his own greed.

Oh yes, I agree. It is pretty silly to portray your political opponent as some evil villian trying to harm the US for nothing but purely personal reaso...

but I will not suffer in silence as men like Barack Obama attempt to transform the nation I love for no other reason than their own vanity.
