I'm kinda picture it going like the Duke Brothers at the end of Trading Places: "Turn the machines back on! Get those people back in here!"

I'm wondering if Romney would actually call the President and bow out once/if it's clear he's toast. I just can't picture him doing it.

You're forgetting. For Romney, this isn't an election, it's a hostile takeover bid. If it doesn't go through, he'll probably sue.

It seems to me that the talking pundits are cherry picking a couple of polls, and making a wild-assed guess as to the EC results.

Do they actually believe this, or are the trading their reputation on contiuning the ratings generator for their networks?

Reputation?

I don't think a football team with obvious racist overtones losing to a team comprised of black panthers is in anyway indicative of a Romney win.

In fact, the same thing happened right before Kerry lost to Bush. Same numbers pretty much.

For conservative pundits, there's absolutely no downside to making predictions that turn out to be completely wrong. They're still going to get a paycheck for writing columns. They're still going to get invites to talk shows. There will never be an consequences for being terrible prognosticators.

And no one will ever mention all the times they've gotten it wrong.

Yes, the ever-true football predictions. Alabama v. LSU tells you with greater than 90% certainty whether a democrat will be elected or a republican... and the Redskins v. whoever tells you whether the incumbent will lose or not. So this weekend, the split decision was no surprise at all... to those of us who know statistics and point out that these things are totally un-farking-related to anything in the world of politics. The president will neither win on the merit of Alabama's victory, nor will Romney win because of the Carolina victory. This is not news, this is idiotic pundits who have run out of actual things to talk about months ago, so they cling to their football games, and other totally random non-metrics.

Same rules for conservative policy makers as well. The media has shirked their responsibility big time here.

Talking about random non-metrics and their strange correlation with reality is honestly more entertaining than listening the latest shills screeching their tired old party lines.

My prediction: Obama wins, and then Sheldon Adelson offers $1 million to each Obama elector to switch their vote.

ManateeGag: wasn't that broken in 2004?

That's where the argument is:

Redskins lost in 2004 but Bush won (as incumbent)

If you go by RR 2.0 then

2012: Redskins lost, Obama will win.

If you go by the Halloween mask sales rule (which has correctly predicted who wins by who sold the most masks in the last 4 Presidential Elections), Obama won 60-40.

2012-11-05 09:45:09 AM
Romney will be upset, then happy, then check the polls and be upset again. Of course this all depends on what state he is in and what audience he is talking to.

Cracked mentioned you can alter the Redskins prediction from 'incumbent party' to 'party that won the popular vote last election' to account for the 2004 results. If Romney gets the popular vote but not the electoral, the whole things works for predicting the popular vote but not the presidency.

What do we do if Romney does win? The analysis, across multiple methods from several reliable analysts each using different methods and looking at different-but-similar data all show that Obama's probability of winning is so high that a Romney win would almost certainly be fraud. Would we investigate it? Would it be Bush v Gore all over again?

we freak out cuz omagerd frawd!?!? the polls show that romney has a 15% chance of winning. since when does 15% completely rule something out? i was listening to something the other day where they were relating it to sports. about 20% of the time a team losing by 1 run in the ninth inning will come back and win. also, 20% is about the amount of times that a football team behind by 3 points in the 4th quarter will come back and win. i am not positive about these numbers because they are second (maybe third?) hand. but they show that 15% isn't as unlikely as most people think. no reason to immediately start assuming fraud, unless you are into that stuff.
