Would rather have seen them bring back McCarthy first. I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up being the first move towards trading Straily, Griffin or another starter for a shortstop.

So Colon is filling an A's hole?

If McCarthy hadn't taken that line drive to the head and needed life-saving surgery afterward, there's no way Colon would be back. But the A's don't know if McCarthy will be able to come back, and they need someone to replace McCarthy, at least until he's able to return (if he can). So my opinion is that it's better to have someone disposable than to trade for a pitcher who may not be needed after a couple months.

No way the A's would trade for a pitcher with their current roster (barring something crazy like Felix Hernandez being available). If anything, they're looking to deal a starter to shore up the infield, which the Colon signing should help them to do. I envision Colon holding down a rotation spot until either Sonny Gray (or, less likely, Brad Peacock) comes up or they know what they have with Dan Straily. Providing that any of those guys aren't traded.

Given recent history, I'm sure Billy Beane can call Kevin Towers in Arizona and make a favorable trade somehow.

My favorite headline ever, after Detroit struck out 12 times...

Whiffs of Cleveland's Colon paralyze Tigers, 7-2

Well, you can't beat a classic headline...especially since I'm pretty sure I wrote that headline a few years ago...
