Pff, everyone knows the solution isn't to enforce existing laws correctly. It's to enact new, special laws! Anyone who's ever driven their pitbull somewhere while talking on a cell phone knows all about this sort of thing.

We can only dream that one day Canada will become Best Korea, then the United States can bring them freedom bombs and freedom bullets!

Speaking of the US why don't we have an Invasion Day? A National holiday to celebrate the invasion and occupation of countries we don't like or want to free. Then on every Invasion Day we can invade a new country, just for the lols.

Kim knew going into the job that she was going to lose that election but decided it was worth it to be the first female Prime Minister. It was Mulroney that didn't want to get spanked into oblivion and ran away. The fact that KC got two seats should be considered a massive victory on her part.

Protesting is useless.

The people and forces you're protesting don't give a shiat if you're chanting slogans and standing in the streets. Not if there's 40 of you, and not if there's 400 of you. `Not even if there is 4,000 or 40,000 of you. They are safe, warm, well-fed, and looking down at you from their ivory towers. As far as they're concerned, you can stand out there all week. It makes no difference to them. They're not the ones enduring cold, hunger and boredom whilst spewing trite slogans in unison.

Sure, it's the principle of the matter. You have to say what you believe. Just don't expect that it will make a difference. Don't expect that the people in control will suddenly say, "Oh, my! We've been wrong all along! We'll give up our profitable endeavor and let the common people have what they want! Chauncey, bring the limo around. I'm going to go amongst them and hand out jobs and money to make up for their time spent convincing me of my wrongdoing in this matter."

No. They will laugh at you and eat another piece of imported cheese that costs more than you make in a week.

Should you just roll over and take it, then? No, I'm not saying that at all. All I'm saying is that standing around shouting slogans and holding signs really doesn't work anymore. Not with the kind of people who are in control, and not with the kind of control they have over everything. They don't care. They don't HAVE TO care. When you're standing around protesting, you're no danger to them. Hell, you're more of a danger to yourselves than you are to them!

Now, the minute the protesters decide to stop shouting slogans-- as a whole-- and instead start pulling down the ivory towers? That's when change occurs.

I'm not saying I approve of the violent path. I don't. I'm not stupid enough to look at all I have and then complain about it. I have shelter, food, decent air, water, electronic gadgets, and the freedom to go where I want and do what I want (within reason). Why would I want to disrupt that? No, I'm not happy all the time, nor am I particularly pleased with working conditions, but I also realize I'm living like a king compared to some people in the world. I think it's seriously selfish and snotty to complain about what we have when so many have nothing.

But that's neither here nor there.

The point is that if you want the powers-that-be to enact change, you won't accomplish it by chanting slogans at them, because these are the kind of people who would probably use your remains as firewood before they'd deign to speak to you, give you what you want, or even acknowledge your existence. They're scum, but they're scum with all the money, all the power, and all the control. Unless you're willing to make your challenge to that control more visceral, they're going to remain in control and do whatever the hell they want, and nothing-- not your protests, not your votes, not your good intentions and happy sunshine unicorn farts-- is going to make a dent in the world they created for themselves.

You outnumber them, but they own it all and you're just borrowing it.

Unless you're willing rough it and give up electricity, safety, access to food and medical care, shelter, modern entertainment and other things they control in order to make you lazy, stupid, and complacent, you're not really going to have an effect on them.

The irony of Anonymous is that they don't understand that to the rich, powerful people in control of the world, ALL OF US are anonymous. Nameless. Not worth assigning individuality to.

We're all anonymous nobodies to them, and until they feel that they are threatened (and again, I don't encourage it) they won't see us any anything else. We're numbers. We're dollar signs. We're marks in a ledger. We're firewood.

Mask or no mask, you don't matter to them, and nothing you say will have any effect on them. Stay home and bake cookies for your loved ones, and enjoy having heat, electricity, and security.

Good to see a Guy Fawkes article on November 5. Bad to find out the Stylized Mask is owned by TimeWarner™. Strange that Guy Fawkes is no longer the Papist Terrorist that shamed all Catholics where ever the union jack flies prompting the name change for Bonfire Night (not to be confused with Texas A&M Darwin Night). Sad that very few places in the US like to burn figures in effigy and have fireworks on a crisp (85°F) night.  Good that at least a few countries old enough have a celebration of a terrorist act that didn't accomplish its purpose.

It makes sense. The problem previously was that it was usually impossible to prosecute the vandals because you couldn't identify them because they were wearing masks. Now that the wearing of the masks is itself a crime, the identification problem is solved.

There's definitely a downside, in that riots aren't orderly (duh), so you could be 2 streets over in what you think is a peaceful protest with a mask, only to find that you're involved in a riot, and get arrested. Not to mention how exactly they will establish the burden of proof on "wearing a mask". Or what constitutes a mask (if I'm protesting in winter - and I'd have to be nuts to do that in Canada - and I have my scarf up, am I going to get arrested?). I'd like to think that it won't get abused, but I'm not terribly optimistic on that point.

I don't know; I'm thinking that face paint might work better. It shouldn't be too tough to keep to the spirit of the V mask. With the help of the sort of 3-D perspective artist that surely must exist among the Anonymoi, it should even be possible to design some patterns that distort visual perspective, making it harder to identify a person from a glance or even a photograph.

Yes, the banning of masks is stupid, but it is not hard to adapt to, and adapting probably frustrates these sorts of people more than protests do. Adapting to externalities often yields better results than trying to control them directly.

Yeah, that's the thing covering their face during a riot or other "unlawful assembly." I've got no problem with the moron breaking store windows being brought up on charges, it just makes reasonable people really nervous when you combine things like this with (at least in the US), a seemingly growing definition of what sort of assembly is "unlawful."

Certain patterns are effective with automated detection. Not sure if you'd find one that worked just as well with a human viewer. Some sort of optical illusion perhaps? Then again the law said "or other disguise," so you're not skirting it that way.

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot

Apparently the morans in the picture have forgotten.

Bhruic: starsrift: This is the idiot law. "Wearing a mask while rioting makes it impossible to find the perps... So we'll make it illegal to wear a mask while rioting!"

If you follow it... You're an idiot!

At least the MP's can pat each other on the back and insist they're tough on crime!

It makes sense. The problem previously was that it was usually impossible to prosecute the vandals because you couldn't identify them because they were wearing masks. Now that the wearing of the masks is itself a crime, the identification problem is solved...

I hate US election season on Fark; I never know when somebody's actually sarcastic, honestly ignorant, or sadly trolling.

There is a distinct difference in a protest involving people effected by the issue, and a protest filled with traveling career protestors who protest for the sake of protest - come armed with collapsible pickets (or no pickets) and gas masks/face masks. It elevates the protest from being about the issue, to being a threat of action, which attracts the 'anarchists' who are there solely for the action and will undermine the original effort in the name of destruction.

A proper protest won't require the use of gas masks/face masks.

My country is turning into your country and I don't like it.

Another step toward the fascist police state supported by Steve & his cadre of neo-con yes-folk.

DeathByGeekSquad:

OK, that one I'm gonna judge as "honestly ignorant". If you RTFA, the masks are only illegal if the protest turns violent. A mask in itself is not an offense. A violent protestor can ONLY break this law if they are ALSO breaking the law that makes this law enforceable. THIS law tries to punish someone for making it impossible to arrest him...
So since it's ACTUALLY impossible to find the perp since he was wearing a mask, this law has zero teeth (unless someone who is unmasked and knows the perp squeals).

What a dumb farking law. It makes wearing the mask illegal if the protest turns violent. Does that mean you are breaking the law if you are peaceful while others are violent? This makes about as much sense as an asshole on my elbow.

HotIgneous Intruder: I have one word: Facepaint.

Paint with that stuff they put on license plates.

Shadyman: Odd, as the Canadian Criminal Code already states that anyone wearing a mask to commit a crime is already eligible for More Trouble (tm). So... LOLWUT?

They needed a law to cover their asses when they get around to banning the burka. The women won't be able to protest because they'd have to take off their face coverings to do so.

Well, on long road trips you could just hang it out the window while driving, so there's that.

Yeah, standing on streets yelling at police is pretty useless.

Someday someone with nothing to lose will have a sniper rifle, an inflatable raft, and a list of where the C-level execs spend their time in the Hamptons. Then shiat will get real.

No, Mr. Agent, it won't be me. I'm just gonna sit here and keep flapping my fingers on the internet.

barefoot in the head: capt.hollister: Pivot: barefoot in the head: And the cops take will off the face shields and gas masks, right?

Oh yes, cops wearing gas masks and protective face shields are exactly the same as the douches that riot and pillage in cases like Montreal and Vancouver.

And the cops wear REMOVE identifying badges. It's easy to feel and act like a bunch of offended virgins until you've actually witnessed a group of masked demonstrators turn a peaceful march into a riot by gratuitously breaking things and attacking cops under the protection of anonimity.

Who you trying to kid?

And who are you trying to demonize ? I don't know about where you live, but where I live, it's certainly not the rule that cops remove their badges. Just ask constable 728
