I'll let them slide on QoS, at least they kept it going. I want all Bond movies to be wildly successful so I'll have new Bond movies the rest of my life....

"Skyfall is where we start
A thousand miles and poles apart
Where worlds collide and days are dark
You may have my number, you can take my name
But you'll never have my heart"

the lyrics are atrocious... i like her voice etc... but that was a tired ca$h grab.

"hey Adele...can we stick skyfall in there somewhere?"
"ell it's kinda stupid sounding...but ...is that a chequebook?"

they need to get rid of the Duran Duran/Adele etc crap theme songs. the skyfall song is garbage.

Probably the best recent Bond theme song, right up there with "The World is Not Enough."

That was pretty solid, too.

As Bond themes go, it's divisive among the fanbase, but I dig it.

basemetal: Well, you are alive......

*tips hat*

Joliebleu: :)

Howdy there!

fusillade762: Many of QoS's problems were due to the writer's strike, if I'm not mistaken.

According to a December 2011 interview with Craig, "We had the bare bones of a script and then there was a writers' strike and there was nothing we could do. We couldn't employ a writer to finish it. I say to myself, 'Never again', but who knows? There was me trying to rewrite scenes-and a writer I am not."[50] He said that he and Forster "were the ones allowed to do it. The rules were that you couldn't employ anyone as a writer, but the actor and director could work on scenes together. We were stuffed. We got away with it, but only just."

That would make sense.

I didn't care too much for the theme song and shakycam crap, though.

I DETEST shakycam. Hate it. Hoping there isn't much in Skyfall.

Interesting thing about Casino Royal: Zero smoking. None. Not that I'm a rabid antismoking nut (puffing my pipe at the moment), but I found it interesting that they could eliminate it entirely and not hurt the pacing at all. Mathis snacking on nuts while talking showed how to do it.

It would be tough to dislodge Madonna's "Die Another Day" as the worst Bond song.

And yes, I include Lulu's "The Man with the Golden Gun" in that statement.

mark12A: I DETEST shakycam. Hate it. Hoping there isn't much in Skyfall.

I haven't read many reviews (because ZOMG SPOILERS) but the general gist of what I've read suggests that there's less/no shakycam.

I can't confirm that, but it's promising.

Duran Duran suck big hairy sweaty balls

I liked View to a Kill only because it's a foxhunting term and I foxhunt.

"Dance into the fire" is an oddly descriptive phrase of hunting, since we all get dressed up and go out and do something truly dangerous (galloping and jumping walls and fences on 1/2 ton beasts). I've had one friend get killed hunting, another with a broken neck and others with various serious injuries. So I listen to it to get psyched up....

Agreed it is THE song that screams Bond, but ages ago someone gave me a Bond cd and it got stuck in the car cd player and stuck on that track so it played every time I started the car. It was about a week before the garage could fix it and now it's ruined the song for me. Also, Diamonds Are Forever is great. You can't really go wrong with Shirley Bassey, unless you car has tortured you with it.

I gotta echo your sentiments. I watched QoS a couple times on an international flight, and it was really enjoyable. The whole "monopolizing water" story line actually makes sense when you look at it from a money/power PoV...

I think I know why they didn't start in the USA...

The producers were short on funds, they almost weren't going to be able make the movie. It got bad enough Bond now drinks Heineken. Expect a mess of advertising.

So they opened in markets where advertising was cheaper. They now have the funds to pay for a mess of US advertising which will get really cheap on Tuesday around 8pm. From Wednesday on expect to feel like you're in a swing state where you're being told to vote for James Bond.

2012-11-04 10:12:27 PM
Could also be that they knew which weekend they wanted for the US and didn't want to compete with the pre-Halloween glut of bad horror films here.

that's almost as bad as whatever watch he was wearing in the last one... except he isnt known for supporting one brand of watches over another so this is a pretty poor argument.

.... wait, actually after reconsidering it im not sure which beverage a fictional character chooses.

please ignore my previous outrage.

Having seen the movie, I have to say, it wasn't as bad as people were saying. It makes sense in the context of the film.

Saw it Saturday night. Best Daniel Craig 007 ever. Very beautifully shot. Even 007 skulking around in the dark in Shanghai was gorgeous. Another thing is that it's more British than most 007 movies, a full 1/2 of the movie taking place in the UK. And then there's the spoilers which I wont mention which isn't really mindblowing, but a great continuity sleight-of-hand.

I think the biggest fit will be thrown when it is strongly implied that James Bond is actually bisexual.

People complaining about the product placement in recent Bond movies seem to have a bit of amnesia about the series. They've been doing it since the BOOKS.

2012-11-05 02:11:08 AM

wildcardjack: The producers were short on funds, they almost weren't going to be able make the movie. It got bad enough Bond now drinks Heineken. Expect a mess of advertising.

A lot of industries have been hit in the pockets lately. But look at the bigger picture: they had a script this time.

Saw it yesterday morning. The first half is breathtakingly good. The fight at the top of the Shanghai tower block is stunning.

However, the 2nd half gets a bit ridiculous (I can't really explain without giving away plot points) and eveyone seems to be missing a big issue with the ending (again, I can't explain as it gives away too much).

One criticism I can make is that Javier Bardem's character is underused, undersold and underexplained (not sure that is a word!!).

2012-11-05 05:27:33 AM

Haliburton Cummings: miles and poles apart
Where worlds collide and days are dark
You may have my number, you can take my name
But you'll never have my heart"

the lyrics are atrocious... i like her voice etc... but that was a tired ca$h grab.

"hey Adele...can we stick skyfall in there somewhere?"
"ell it's kinda stupid sounding...but ...is that a chequebook?"

they need to get rid of the Duran Duran/Adele etc crap theme songs. the skyfall song is garbage.

I hate this farking song. Singer for our group really wants to do this song, so much she is almost begging.

2012-11-05 06:13:26 AM

wildcardjack: I think I know why they didn't start in the USA...

They never start in the USA - the world premiere is always in London, what with Bond being British and all.

Bubblegum Tate: do they ever do Bond marathons on tv anymore? Those "13 Days of Bond"s used to drop my productivity by about half.

Sky TV bought the UK rights on ITV, and they're been looping the movies pretty much 24-7 for the last month. This will probably stop when Skyfall goes off the cinema rotation and you may be lucky to get Goldfinger for the next three Christmases.

It's not that much of a concern as with every new movie they re-release the entire farking collection on DVD/Bluray/Format-of-the-month again.

Right, three hours of a humorless Jason Bourne wannabe and an instructional video on Texas Hold'em. I'll take Brosnan's Bond movies (except Die Another Day) any day.

And this should be pretty damn good.

A really bad one. That, to me, was the WORST part of the movie. They should have stuck with baccarat.

Bond movies are the only time I make it a point to see in theaters as opposed to waiting for cable, Netflix, Dvd ad nauseum. I make no such claim for any other genre, series, or actor/actress. Only Bond.

No. Not at all. It's like comparing apples and oranges. CR was a reboot. I accept that. The older movies still stand.

Personally, I'm looking forward to Skyfall. I like the theme song. I've liked all the trailers and commercials I've seen. I've liked all the plot synopses I've read. Even some spoilers I've read don't bother me. It looks like it will be a great ride.

I know DAD gets a ton of shiat, but frankly, I give it the Godfather Part 3 pass, i.e., it doesn't stand up to previous incarnations of Bond, but is still better than most of the crap we get from the movie industry.

Fair enough.

It gets points for John Cleese and the Thunderball jetpack.

Halle Berry and Rosamund Pike don't hurt matters, either.

I saw DAD in the theater 3 times because I just couldn't understand it and kept trying. Granted I was drunk each time but still. No one goes to a Bond film expecting an accurate account of the inner workings of British intelligence but why did the Korean guy turn into a white guy? Who then put on a power suit? And the invisible car...and Madonna. It started out strong, Bond getting captured and tortured for months, that was cool. But the Icarus weapon? And all they're using it for is to destroy mines?

The Bond movies walk a fine line between the believable and the absurd. I think it's called the Moonraker line. And DAD violated it.

That's the thing. The foundations were there for that to be a great film. Specifically, I mean the torture opening you refer to, which took the whole "Bond is injured" premise of The World is Not Enough to an interesting new extreme.

But... they squandered that.

And just what the hell was Michael Madsen doing, anyway?

Bond's psychological damage was touched upon in GoldenEye but yeah, that could be addressed more. Michael Madsen did dick in that movie. It looks like they wrote a bigger part for him but cut most of it.

That was the great thing about the Brosnan era, they toyed around with the mythology and image of James Bond instead of having it all seem like an out-and-out rehash of what was done before.

Mugato: Michael Madsen did dick in that movie. It looks like they wrote a bigger part for him but cut most of it.

I don't understand the point to having him there at all. The whole thing seemed like he hilariously phoned it in from the comfort of his home (with a green screen).

The last season of 24 treated him with more dignity than that.
